If stuttering starts when a looping video, GIF, or other media source is active, test Streamlabs Desktop’s media-file-caching setting by changing only that setting and comparing the same scene under the same workload. Caching reuses decoded frames to reduce repeated CPU/GPU decoding, but uses memory; it is not a universal fix for stream stutter or game FPS drops.
What media-file caching does—and what it costs
Streamlabs describes the feature as “caching the decoded frames instead of decoding them repetitively.” For looping media such as MP4 video, GIFs, and MP3 audio, the app can read decoded frames from memory rather than repeatedly decoding the same data. That can reduce processing work while the source loops, at the cost of memory use. Streamlabs’ explanation, written by Eddy Gharbi on June 5, 2019 and last updated January 28, 2022, says its internal measurements showed a CPU-usage reduction of more than 35%. That is a vendor-reported measurement, not an independent benchmark or a promised result for every computer.
The same article states that the cache limit is 2GB and that Streamlabs reduces its own cache use when other applications cause local memory use to spike. Because that explanation is older and does not establish the exact path or label in every current app version, use the Advanced settings menu and verify the setting shown in your installation rather than relying on an assumed menu label.
Identify which kind of stutter you are seeing
Before changing settings, note whether the symptom is in the stream or preview, in the game’s frame rate, or in both. A media source may affect Streamlabs’ workload without being the reason a game’s FPS falls. A toggle test can show whether caching appears related under your workload, but cannot diagnose the underlying cause on its own.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Stream or preview stutter: Note whether it coincides with a looping media source, and whether the recording or stream output is affected as well as the preview.
- Game FPS drops: Treat this as a separate symptom to investigate. Game performance can be affected by GPU load or overlays even if media caching is unrelated.
- Both: Record both observations so you can tell whether a change affects one symptom, both, or neither.
Test media-file caching safely
- Record a baseline. Note the scene, media sources, stream or recording workload, and when the stutter occurs. Keep these conditions consistent for the comparison.
- Find the setting. Open Streamlabs Desktop’s Advanced settings and locate media-file caching. The available source does not confirm a version-specific path or exact label, so check the current interface in your installed version.
- Change only the caching toggle. If it is enabled, turn it off for the test; if it is disabled, compare with it enabled only if you can safely restore the original state. Follow an app restart prompt if one appears; do not assume a restart is always required.
- Repeat the same workload. Use the same scene and media loop, with comparable stream or recording conditions. Observe whether the stutter changes and whether CPU or memory pressure appears different.
- Restore the previous setting if needed. If disabling caching worsens CPU performance or makes no clear difference, restore the original setting. A single before-and-after comparison is useful evidence, not proof of a cause.
Check system load before considering an upgrade
Streamlabs’ system requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists 8GB RAM as a minimum and recommends 16GB or more for more demanding streaming setups. It also recommends a 512GB-or-larger SSD. These broad requirements do not establish that insufficient memory or storage is causing a particular stutter, and they do not show that buying hardware will fix it.
Check actual memory use and the rest of the system load while reproducing the problem. Consider a compatible RAM upgrade only if the machine is below the relevant recommendation or diagnostic information indicates memory pressure; confirm laptop or motherboard compatibility before buying. The SSD recommendation is general system guidance, not a caching-specific remedy.

Use a diagnostic report if the test does not clarify the cause
If the symptom continues or the caching comparison is inconclusive, send Streamlabs a diagnostic report: Settings > Get Support > Upload Diagnostic Report. Streamlabs says the report includes app state, error messages, stream settings, scenes and sources, plus computer details such as CPU, memory, GPU, and driver information. Those details can help support investigate the broader system rather than prompting repeated cache changes. Streamlabs explains the diagnostic report here.
If the game’s FPS drops too
For a game-FPS symptom, Streamlabs’ separate troubleshooting guidance includes disabling third-party in-game overlays and reducing GPU frame output with synchronization or frame-cap options, or lowering in-game graphics. These are adjacent checks for game performance, not media-file-caching fixes. See Streamlabs’ game-capture troubleshooting guidance; some sections refer to Windows 10, so check whether a suggestion applies to your current operating system and game.

Avoid clearing cache as a first-line fix
Do not confuse the media-file-caching toggle with clearing Streamlabs’ app cache. Streamlabs’ getting-started guide says clearing cache resets user data. If a proposed fix involves clearing cache or restarting with a reset, check Streamlabs’ guidance and contact support first, particularly if you rely on saved scenes or settings.

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded documentary or other uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not a fix for Streamlabs Desktop stuttering. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera.
