To earn voluntary support during a livestream, set up a third-party tip page, connect a payment method available in your country, add its alert widget to your streaming software, and put the tip link somewhere viewers can find it. You can also use platform-native features such as YouTube Super Chat or channel memberships, but those are different routes with their own rules. Neither an alert nor a payment link guarantees income.
Choose the kind of support you want to offer
Decide whether viewers should be able to send a one-time tip, use a platform-native feature, or join a recurring membership. You can offer more than one, but label each clearly so viewers know where the payment goes and whether it comes with a benefit.
- Third-party tip: A payment page hosted by a service such as Streamlabs or StreamElements. You share its link and can connect an alert widget to your stream.
- Platform-native fan funding: Features offered within a platform, such as YouTube Super Chat or channel memberships. Availability and rules depend on that platform and your account.
- Recurring membership: A subscription-style way for supporters to pay regularly, potentially in exchange for defined perks. Patreon is one example; fees depend on the applicable plan and other charges.
Use “tip” or “voluntary support” for a payment that does not buy a promised product or service. Do not describe a payment as tax-deductible or legally a donation unless you have jurisdiction-specific authority for that claim.
Set up a third-party tip page and alert
- Check payment availability first. Confirm that the service supports a payout method and account type you can use, and consider which payment options are convenient for your audience. Payment access can vary by country and provider.
- Connect your payment account. Follow the chosen service’s current instructions. Streamlabs’ setup guide recommends a PayPal Business account to help keep personal details hidden from viewers; check your account settings and local availability before relying on that protection. - Customize the tip page. Set any amount guidance and message controls the service offers. Make clear that support is voluntary and explain any benefit only if you actually provide one.
- Share the page link. Put it in a place viewers can reach during or before the stream, such as the stream description or a channel panel. Tell viewers briefly what the link is for.
- Add the alert widget to your live scene. Use the service’s current instructions to add its alert as a browser source or overlay in your streaming setup. Customize available visuals and sound, and review message controls or filtering so an incoming alert is suitable for your broadcast. Both Streamlabs and StreamElements document tipping and customizable alerts.
- Review the full viewer experience. Check the service’s instructions and settings for how payment messages appear, what controls you have over them, and what viewers can use to pay. Do not assume that every payment method works for every viewer.
Check eligibility before choosing a payment route
Payment options can depend on your location, age, channel, activity, and payout account. For example, StreamElements’ published SE.Pay requirements state that users must be at least 18, have a Twitch or YouTube channel with over 100 followers or subscribers, stream consistently, have PayPal enabled, and have a bank account in an eligible country. Requirements and account availability can change, so check the current page and your dashboard before building your setup around SE.Pay.

Understand fees and payment access
A service saying it takes no cut does not mean a tip is fee-free. Streamlabs says it takes no cut of tips but excludes standard credit-card processing fees. StreamElements says it does not add a tipping fee, while payment-provider fees may apply. Processing, currency conversion, payment methods, and availability depend on the route, account, currency, and region. Check the selected service’s current terms before presenting a fee as a total cost.

Keep third-party tips distinct from YouTube features
A tip-page link is a payment route outside YouTube’s own fan-funding features. YouTube’s Commerce Products policy states: “Fan funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools.” The policy describes Super Thanks as paid animation and message highlighting, and channel memberships as recurring payments tied to member perks. These features are not simply another name for a direct tip link; review the YouTube Commerce Products policy for the platform’s terms and rules.
Twitch’s May 13, 2026 “Monetization for All” announcement discusses monetization access and onboarding milestones. Treat those as current-program details, not a guarantee that every feature or payout is automatically available to every creator.

Consider recurring memberships separately
Memberships can complement one-off support, but they create a recurring relationship and may involve promised perks. Patreon’s creator-fees guide, updated September 11, 2026, says creators who published their page after August 4, 2025 use the standard 10% plan, plus applicable taxes and payment-processing fees. Existing-page treatment has caveats, so check the current Patreon fee guide for the plan that applies to your page.
Manage alerts while you are live
Alerts are part of the broadcast experience, so consider whether you need controls to pause, mute, or skip one while presenting. A physical control pad is optional: Elgato documents Stream Deck actions for muting, pausing, and skipping Streamlabs alerts in its Streamlabs integration guide. It does not collect payments or create alerts by itself.
