Back up the uploaded videos with Google Takeout
Google Takeout is the bulk-export route for videos uploaded to the YouTube account. Start the export before editing, moving, renaming, or replacing local source files. Do not assume that a saved YouTube playlist or an offline download in the YouTube app gives you an archival copy.
- Check the account and channel. Sign in to the Google account associated with the channel. If the channel is linked to a Brand Account, make sure you are using the Brand Account that uploaded the videos. Google says an export can appear to be missing videos if you selected the wrong account or Brand Account.
- Request a Takeout export. Select YouTube data in Google Takeout. Deselect unrelated products if you want a smaller archive, then request the export. Google offers delivery by email download link and cloud destinations including Drive, Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive.
- Wait for the archive and download it. Takeout creates the archive after the request; Google warns that changes made between the request and archive creation may not be included. If you changed or uploaded videos during that interval, check the archive carefully and request another export if needed.
- Inspect before relying on it. On a desktop, open
archive_browser.htmlin the archive to review its format and contents. Check that the expected recordings are present and that the files open. Google says YouTube videos are exported in their original format or as MP4 files with H.264 video and AAC audio; inspect the files rather than assuming every item is an untouched copy of your local source file. - Keep a separate safe copy. Store the downloaded archive in a location with enough space, such as a suitable external drive, as well as the original download location if practical. Google’s general guidance is to choose a safe location with sufficient space; it does not specify a particular drive brand or capacity.
Preserve the playlist and its order separately
The video archive and the playlist are different things to preserve. Before changing files, make a simple inventory of the playlist title and URL, then list each video’s title and URL in the order shown. Add notes where needed to distinguish similar entries. This gives you a record to rebuild or check the playlist if its order changes.
YouTube documents saving a playlist to your library for later access and managing its order. The cited help does not describe “Save playlist” as exporting a local playlist file or manifest, so do not treat it as a backup of playlist structure. Playlist order can be changed; record it before making changes that could affect how you identify or arrange the source videos.

When to use YouTube Studio downloads
YouTube Studio provides a per-video download for a video uploaded by the signed-in creator. In Studio, open Content, find the uploaded video, open its menu, and choose the download option. YouTube’s help describes the download as an MP4 at 720p or 360p depending on video size. This can be useful for a spot check or as a supplement to Takeout, but it is not the same as a bulk export.
The Studio download feature does not download other creators’ videos. YouTube lists cases where the option may be unavailable: the video was removed, it has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, it uses a preapproved audio track, or it has already been downloaded five times in the preceding 24 hours. If a Studio download is unavailable, use Takeout for your own uploaded videos where possible, and verify that the correct Google or Brand Account is selected.

Check the backup before changing files
- Confirm you exported from the account or Brand Account that uploaded the videos.
- Confirm the archive contains the recordings you expect, and open representative files.
- Keep the archive in a safe location with enough space; do not delete or overwrite the source files until you have verified the copy.
- Record the playlist title, URL, and ordered video URLs separately from the video archive.
- If videos changed while Takeout was preparing the archive, account for Google’s warning that those changes may be omitted; export again if the archive is not current enough for your needs.
