In Animal Kingdom, Smurf’s power over her sons is built from a troubling combination: she offers care and protection while controlling the family’s criminal enterprise, and the sons fear and resent her even as they continue to seek her love and approval. Executive producer Jonathan Lisco described her influence as an “emotionally incestuous” hold—a characterization of the show’s unsettling family dynamic, not an allegation of literal sexual relationships or a clinical diagnosis.
Why Smurf’s influence feels so unsettling
The series follows a working-class criminal family in which Smurf’s adult sons remain under their mother’s control. In producer commentary accompanying a 2016 table read, Lisco described the contradiction at the heart of that relationship: “She has a, kind of emotionally incestuous hold over them, they crave her affection and attention but also a little bit repelled by it.” The important qualifier is emotionally: he was describing the show’s dramatic tone and power dynamic, not making a factual claim of literal incest.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s official character descriptions sharpen the contrast. Smurf can coddle her sons or menace them; they fear and resent her, yet continue to seek her love and approval. That mix makes affection difficult to separate from dependence and obedience. Her hold is not simply that she is their mother, or that she commands the family’s criminal work: it is that her approval remains important to sons who also have reason to recoil from her.
How care and control coexist
Smurf’s nurturing gestures exist alongside her authority over the family’s criminal enterprise. Protection can be real within her own understanding of herself, while also serving a controlling relationship. Ellen Barkin, who portrays Smurf, put the character’s contradiction this way in a June 2016 interview: “Smurf does not love her sons in the traditional way at all, but she does love them in her own way. She protects them in her way.” Barkin also connected Smurf’s survival-oriented approach to the character’s difficult youth; that is the actor’s interpretation of a fictional character, not an objective account of a real person.

This does not make the sons’ attachment uncomplicated. Lisco’s description captures a pull toward Smurf’s attention alongside repulsion, while the official descriptions explicitly pair their fear and resentment with continued efforts to win her approval. The show’s tension comes from those feelings existing together, rather than from a simple division between a loving mother and an unambiguously rejecting family.
Smurf’s relationships with her sons are not interchangeable
The official descriptions sketch distinct positions in the family, but they do not establish a complete psychological profile for each son.

Deran
Deran is the youngest son, and the official description says he feels he must prove himself. That gives his position a different emphasis from Pope’s volatility, without by itself explaining every aspect of his relationship with Smurf.
Baz
Baz is Smurf’s adopted son. That distinction matters when describing the family: he is part of her close circle, but is not identified as one of her biological sons.

What the phrase “disturbing hold” means—and does not mean
“Disturbing hold” is a useful description of the show’s framing: Smurf’s authority and forms of care keep her sons emotionally entangled with her, even as the official descriptions say they fear and resent her. Lisco’s phrase “emotionally incestuous” is an attributed interpretation of that intimacy and control. It should not be turned into a diagnosis, a claim about a real family, or evidence that the story alleges literal sexual relationships between Smurf and her sons.
The television series and the Australian film
The American television series adapts the 2010 Australian crime film, as TIME reported in June 2016. The film and the television adaptation are distinct versions; the discussion of Smurf’s hold here concerns the television series and its own producers’ and official character descriptions.
