To show an animated GIF when someone tips you, configure the tip alert with the service that receives the tip, add that service’s alert widget to the scene you broadcast, then test it before going live. In Streamlabs, for example, choose the Tips event in Alert Box settings, select a GIF, save, add the Alert Box source or browser source, and trigger a test.
Choose the service that receives the tip
The alert and the tip destination need to match. If you want Streamlabs tip alerts, viewers must use your Streamlabs donation link; a tip sent through a different provider does not automatically trigger a Streamlabs alert. StreamElements has its own tipping page and alert workflow, so configure its tips and overlay together rather than mixing providers.
Tips or donations are distinct from events such as Twitch Bits, YouTube Super Chats, subscriptions, and charity fundraising. Choose the event type that matches what you want to display, and check the provider’s current account and platform settings. Payment availability and platform rules can vary by region and account.
Set up a donation GIF in Streamlabs
- Open Alert Box settings. Sign in to Streamlabs and open Alert Box. Link the streaming platform or account needed for the events you want to receive.
- Choose the tip event. Select Tips and customize the visual asset, message text, sound, and other available alert settings. Streamlabs lists GIF among the supported image formats, alongside PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, WebM, and MP4. Check the current settings for accepted upload limits; the documentation reviewed does not establish a universal GIF size or duration limit.
- Save the alert. Save your changes before testing or adding the widget to your scene.
- Optionally add a tip variation. If larger tips should use a different animation, create a variation, set a condition such as a minimum tip amount, and assign the GIF. Streamlabs’ example guide illustrates a GIF variation for tips of $10 or more; that is an example configuration, not a guarantee about every account or platform.
- Add the alert to your broadcast. In Streamlabs Desktop, add the Alert Box source. In compatible streaming software, copy the widget URL and add it as a Browser Source. Make sure the source is in the scene you will actually broadcast.
- Test the complete alert. Trigger a test from the dashboard and check the animation, text, sound, timing, and placement. If you created a threshold variation, test the relevant condition as well.
Exact menu labels can change. If your screen differs, use the provider’s current settings and help materials rather than relying on an older screenshot. Streamlabs’ illustrative example says, “Now when someone tips $10 or more, my viewers will see a gif of my dog holding some money.”

Use StreamElements as a separate workflow
StreamElements can also be used for tipping and alerts. Its setup materials describe creating an account, configuring a tipping panel that points viewers to a StreamElements tipping page, and building overlays with an alertbox that can be added as a browser source. Set up the tipping destination and alert source within StreamElements; a Streamlabs link does not automatically trigger StreamElements alerts, or the reverse.
- Create or sign in to your StreamElements account and configure its tipping page.
- Set up the overlay and alertbox, including the tip alert and its visual asset.
- Add the overlay’s browser source to the scene being broadcast, then use the service’s test controls to check the result.
Fix donation GIF alerts that do not appear
- The source is missing from the live scene: Confirm the Alert Box or browser source exists in the scene currently being broadcast and is not hidden.
- The wrong event or account is selected: Check that the tip event is enabled and that the correct provider account or channel is connected.
- The donor used another payment link: For Streamlabs tips, confirm the viewer used your Streamlabs donation link. Streamlabs documents this as a requirement for its tip alerts.
- Your latest edits are not showing: Save the alert settings, reload or refresh the widget if its displayed state is stale, and run another test.
- A different animation appears: Review variation conditions and thresholds. A tip below a minimum amount may trigger the default alert or another variation.
- The animation or sound is wrong: Recheck the selected asset and audio settings, then test in the active scene. The documented GIF support does not establish a universal maximum size or duration.
