Download OBS Studio from the official OBS Project website, install the build for your operating system, then use its Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting setup. Add a simple scene, check your audio, connect OBS to YouTube with the server URL and stream key, and test before your scheduled broadcast. OBS’s published system requirements are a compatibility baseline—not a promise that a particular computer can stream smoothly.
How to download and install OBS for YouTube streaming
1. Check your computer and operating system
OBS lists these basic requirements on its System Requirements page:
- Windows: Windows 10 or Windows 11, with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU.
- macOS: macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later, an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU, and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU.
- Linux/Unix: an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland.
These are OBS’s published baselines, not recommended specifications for every production. As OBS puts it: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” CPU demands depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. If you are unsure how your computer will perform, run the wizard and test your intended setup before going live.
2. Download OBS from the official site
- Go to the official OBS Project download page.
- Choose the download for your operating system.
- Open the downloaded installer or build and follow its prompts.
- Launch OBS Studio when installation is complete.
Use the OBS Project site rather than a third-party download site. The available downloads and installation details can change, so follow the instructions shown for your operating system on the official page.

How do I set up OBS for YouTube Live?
3. Run Auto-Configuration Wizard
On first launch, OBS offers the Auto-Configuration Wizard. It considers your intended use, available hardware resources, and—when setting up for streaming—network conditions. Let it configure a starting point, then check the result with a test rather than assuming it guarantees smooth output.
If the wizard does not appear, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS recommends this path because the right settings vary with the computer and the stream.

4. Make a simple scene
A scene is the arrangement of visual and audio sources shown in your broadcast. Start with one scene and add only what the stream needs. OBS’s Quick Start Guide describes common source types:
- Display Capture or Window Capture for a monitor or application window, depending on your platform.
- Game Capture for games on Windows.
- Video Capture Device for a webcam or capture card.
- Images, text, or media sources when your layout needs them.
Add a source from the Sources area and select the item you want OBS to capture. Check the preview to confirm that the right screen, window, camera, or media appears. For a documentary stream, for example, you might use a media source for the video and a text source for a title card; avoid adding sources that do not serve the broadcast.

5. Check microphone and desktop audio
OBS captures desktop audio and a microphone by default. Speak into the microphone and play a sound on the computer while watching the Audio Mixer: the corresponding meters should move. If the wrong device is active or a meter stays still, open Settings → Audio and select the intended devices manually. Check that neither source is unintentionally muted.
A USB microphone is optional; it is not a prerequisite for using OBS. If you use one, select it in OBS and verify its meter before streaming. A capture card is likewise only needed for an external video source that requires one.

6. Choose webcam/mobile or encoder streaming
YouTube supports webcam, mobile, and encoder-based live streams. Webcam or mobile streaming may suit a straightforward camera broadcast. YouTube identifies screen or game sharing, external audio/video hardware, and more involved production as encoder use cases; OBS is an encoder-based setup.
Resolution and frame rate should suit both your computer and network. OBS notes that 60 FPS can be more taxing than 30 FPS and recommends testing. The supplied setup guidance does not establish one bitrate, resolution, or frame-rate setting that is right for every computer and connection, so use the wizard’s result as a starting point and judge the test on your actual setup.

Where do I find my YouTube stream key?
7. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live.
- In the Live Control Room, create or select the stream you plan to broadcast.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the encoder details shown there.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service if it is available, then enter the stream key. If configuring a custom server, enter YouTube’s server URL in the server field and the key in the stream-key field.
- Apply the settings, then start the encoder in OBS when you are ready to test.
YouTube’s encoder instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Keep the stream key private: it connects an encoder to your broadcast. YouTube’s Live Control Room labels and flow can change, so follow the current prompts there.
If you have never enabled live streaming on your YouTube channel, allow for activation time before a scheduled broadcast. YouTube says, “Enabling a live stream for the first time may take up to 24 hours.”
Test OBS before your real broadcast
OBS’s guidance is to test for a few minutes rather than jump straight into a first stream or recording. For a scheduled YouTube stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room and then click Go live when you intend to begin the public broadcast.
- Confirm the preview shows the intended scene and sources.
- Check microphone and desktop-audio meters, then listen to the audio in the YouTube preview if available.
- Look for missing, frozen, or incorrectly framed video.
- Watch OBS and your computer for performance problems during the test.
- Confirm YouTube receives the encoder signal before starting the scheduled broadcast.
For more on the interface and its main controls, see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Common first-stream problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that OBS is set to YouTube or the correct server URL, and that you copied the stream key for the selected stream. Re-enter the current details from Live Control Room if needed.
- The stream cannot be enabled yet: First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it in advance rather than waiting until the broadcast time.
- The microphone or desktop sound is missing: Check the Audio Mixer for movement and mute status; choose the correct device in Settings → Audio.
- The wrong image appears or a source is blank: Check the selected display, window, game, or capture device and verify the scene preview. Capture options vary by platform.
- The stream stutters or the computer struggles: Re-run the Auto-Configuration Wizard and test again. Reduce the demands of the output or scene if necessary; compatibility with OBS alone does not ensure adequate streaming performance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube around the clock, that is different from using OBS to broadcast a live camera or desktop session. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists on YouTube: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing at home has to stay on; your computer, OBS, and home connection are not needed to keep the loop running.
Quick Recap
- Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Other billing lengths are also available.
