To get clean HDMI, turn off your camera’s HDMI information or display overlays, connect its HDMI output to a compatible capture device, and select that device in your streaming software. The exact setting and supported resolution depend on the camera model and operating mode, so test the full setup before going live.

What clean HDMI means

Clean HDMI is a camera’s HDMI video feed without its onscreen indicators—such as recording status, battery level, or exposure information. Panasonic uses the term for an HDMI transmission without those display elements (Panasonic’s clean HDMI guidance). If the camera cannot turn off those overlays in the mode you need, its menus or status information may remain visible in the stream.

A capture device receives the camera’s HDMI signal and makes it available to your computer and streaming software. The usual signal path is camera HDMI output → capture-device HDMI input → computer → streaming software.

Check camera and capture-device compatibility first

  • Live HDMI in your chosen mode: Confirm the exact camera model sends live video over HDMI at the resolution and frame rate you intend to use. Features can vary by operating mode. Panasonic notes that some cameras on its clean-output list may not provide clean output while recording (Panasonic camera guidance).
  • Overlay control: Check that the camera can disable HDMI information or its equivalent in that mode.
  • Matching connectors: Confirm the camera’s HDMI port type and choose a cable that fits it and the capture device. Many cameras use a smaller HDMI connector; check the camera manual rather than assuming a full-size port.
  • Accepted video format: Make sure the capture device accepts the camera’s output resolution and frame rate. For example, Elgato’s compatibility guidance for Cam Link cites 720p or 1080p; that guidance applies to that product, not every capture device (Elgato Cam Link setup guidance).
  • Power and sustained operation: Check whether the camera can stay active for the planned session, how to disable standby or battery-saving behavior, and whether it supports suitable external power. Sustained video use can also cause heat; Sony warns that high-quality continuous streaming may raise camera temperature and trigger automatic shutdown (Sony streaming guidance; Elgato camera setup guidance).

Set up clean HDMI step by step

  1. Find the model-specific instructions. Search the camera’s current manual or manufacturer support page for live HDMI output and clean HDMI behavior. Confirm the instructions apply to the mode you will use, not just playback or a different recording mode.
  2. Turn off HDMI overlays. Look for a setting named HDMI Info Display, HDMI Information Display, Live View display, or similar. Sony’s example path is HDMI Settings → HDMI Info. Display → Off; that is a Sony example, not a universal menu path (Sony’s instructions; Nikon Z 6 reference materials).
  3. Connect the video path. Connect the camera’s HDMI output to the capture device’s HDMI input using the correctly matched cable. Connect the capture device to the computer and open your streaming software.
  4. Select the capture device. In the software’s video-source settings, choose the capture device. The control’s exact name and location depend on the software.
  5. Set the camera’s video output. Use a supported movie mode and choose a frame size and frame rate the capture device accepts. Nikon’s general guidance includes setting the desired movie frame size and frame rate, HDMI resolution to Auto, display size to 100%, HDMI live-view onscreen display to Off, and standby timers to no limit or the camera’s maximum permitted setting. Follow your exact model’s manual; these controls are not universal (Nikon Z 6 reference materials). Sony recommends Movie Mode in its documented workflow (Sony’s instructions).
  6. Test the whole session path. Check the preview in the streaming software or on a monitor. Verify that overlays are absent, the capture device receives the selected format, and the camera remains powered and awake for the intended duration. Elgato advises checking continuous operation, battery-saving behavior, and external power for DSLR setups (Elgato camera setup guidance).

Fix common clean HDMI problems

The camera menu or status information is still visible

  • Recheck the HDMI information/display setting; turning off the camera’s regular shooting display may not disable HDMI overlays.
  • Confirm the setting applies in the selected movie or live-view mode. Clean output can vary by operating mode.
  • Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model. Cropping the image in software may hide an overlay at the edge, but it does not make the HDMI output clean.

The capture device shows no picture or an unsupported signal

  • Confirm the cable runs from the camera’s HDMI output to the capture device’s HDMI input, then check that the capture device is selected as the software’s source.
  • Verify that the camera’s HDMI connector and cable match and that the capture device accepts the camera’s output resolution and frame rate.
  • Try the output settings recommended by the camera and capture-device manufacturers; do not assume a format supported by one capture device works with another.

The camera stops sending video during a long stream

  • Check standby timers and battery-saving settings. Set them to no limit or the longest permitted time where the camera allows it.
  • Use suitable external power if supported, and test the camera for the full expected session length.
  • Watch for heat-related shutdown, particularly when streaming at high quality. If the camera becomes hot or shuts down, follow its manufacturer’s operating guidance.

When direct USB may be an alternative

Some Sony cameras support USB streaming, which may avoid an HDMI capture device, but availability depends on the camera. Compare the exact model’s supported connection, overlay behavior, accepted formats, continuous-operation limits, and power or heat behavior before choosing USB instead (Sony USB streaming guidance; Elgato camera setup guidance).
