If you want to record your screen and edit the video without another app, choose based on how much editing and sharing your work requires. Camtasia is the strongest fit for detailed tutorial editing, ScreenPal combines straightforward editing with broad device support and hosting, and Loom is geared toward quick screen-and-camera videos shared with colleagues. These distinctions reflect vendor documentation, not hands-on testing.
What to compare before choosing
“Built-in editing” can mean anything from trimming the start and end of a recording to shaping a finished lesson on a multitrack timeline. Match the software to the work you actually need to do:
- Editing depth: Decide whether trimming is enough or whether you need multiple media layers, cursor adjustments, captions, or audio cleanup.
- Recording inputs: Check support for screen, webcam, microphone, and system audio. An external microphone is optional, but may help if you narrate tutorials.
- Sharing: Consider whether you need a hosted link, embedding, team feedback, or a local video export.
- Devices: Confirm that the recorder works on the desktop or mobile platforms you use.
- Plan restrictions: Check recording limits, watermarks, export quality, hosting, and which subscription tier includes the features you want.
- Team cost: For a group, compare the cost for the number of users who need access, not just the advertised price for one seat.
How the three tools differ
| Tool | Best fit | Capture and editing | Sharing and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camtasia | Polished tutorials and training videos where editing control matters. | TechSmith lists recording up to 4K UHD, webcam and microphone capture, system audio, waveform and keyframe editing, plus cursor smoothing and click/keystroke editing. Create and Pro add different advanced capabilities. | Subscription-only sales for Camtasia 2025 began in January 2025; check the current plan page for exact tier names, inclusions, and price. |
| ScreenPal | Accessible recording, simple editing, and hosting across a range of devices. | Available for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Chromebook. Its product page lists trimming and cutting, text, overlays, and music. | The free plan allows recordings of up to 15 minutes at a time, editing, and unlimited video hosting. Paid plans unlock longer recordings and additional capabilities; AI features are plan-sensitive. |
| Loom | Short asynchronous team updates and explanations where quick sharing is central. | Its feature page lists screen and camera-bubble recording, system audio, transcripts and captions, trimming and stitching, custom thumbnails, embedded links, and transcript editing. | The pricing page accessed in 2026 listed Business + AI at $24 per user per month. This listed price can change; check Loom’s current pricing before purchasing. |
Which one should you choose?
Choose Camtasia for a more controlled finished video
Camtasia is the most natural fit of these three when you need to refine a tutorial or training video rather than simply cut down a quick explanation. TechSmith lists waveform and keyframe editing, cursor controls, and screen capture up to 4K UHD. Its plans are not interchangeable: the product comparison distinguishes Essentials, Create, and Pro, while TechSmith describes text-based editing and audio cleanup in Create and additional tools such as speech-to-text, localization, scripts, and avatars in Pro. Confirm current plan names and feature availability on TechSmith’s Camtasia page before choosing a tier.
Do not rely on older comparisons that quote a one-time Camtasia purchase price. TechSmith says Camtasia 2025 moved to an annual subscription-only sales model in January 2025. Check the current Camtasia plan and pricing page for purchasing terms.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose ScreenPal for simple edits and cross-device access
ScreenPal suits users who value basic edits and built-in hosting, or who need to record on more than a single desktop platform. Its free plan’s 15-minute recording limit is the key constraint to check if you plan to capture longer lessons. ScreenPal also advertises AI captions, voiceovers, and translation, but availability depends on the plan; verify the current ScreenPal plan page before depending on those tools.
Choose Loom for fast, shareable explanations
Loom is a good candidate when the deliverable is a brief screen-and-camera explanation for teammates, and the priority is sending a link rather than building a heavily edited tutorial. Its listed features include transcript-oriented edits and embedded links. The $24 per user per month Business + AI figure was on Loom’s pricing page when accessed in 2026, not a guaranteed future price. Check Loom’s pricing page for current cost and plan details.

A simple decision path
- Start with the finished video. For a polished lesson with detailed edits, look first at Camtasia. For a quick explanation to share with a team, look at Loom.
- Check where you record. If you need Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Chromebook coverage, ScreenPal lists support for all five.
- Check the edit you cannot do without. Verify the exact tier for captions, audio cleanup, cursor controls, or any other must-have; do not infer that a feature is included across all plans.
- Check the distribution method and total cost. Decide whether hosted links or local exports suit your workflow, then compare recurring costs for the number of people who need a seat.
Common buying mistakes
- Assuming every editor offers the same depth: A trim-and-stitch workflow is not the same as timeline, keyframe, and audio editing. Identify the edits your videos need before selecting a tool.
- Overlooking free-plan limits: ScreenPal’s free recording limit is 15 minutes per recording. Confirm duration, watermark, hosting, and export restrictions for any free or trial plan.
- Using old pricing: Subscription packaging changes, and historical one-time prices can mislead, particularly for Camtasia 2025 and newer.
- Buying team seats before checking the workflow: A solo plan or per-user subscription may not suit a team; calculate the cost for everyone who needs to record or edit.
Optional equipment for narration
You do not need to buy a microphone to record your screen. If you plan to narrate tutorials and want a separate audio input, an external microphone is one option; Camtasia lists external microphone capture among its supported inputs. Choose the software first, then decide whether your existing microphone is adequate. No specific microphone model is recommended here.

Screen recording software captures and edits a recording; it is not the same as keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded video. If your separate goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream that loops prerecorded videos, StreamNeo handles that from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. To start, create a StreamNeo account.
