If YouTube’s AI suggestions and transcript outline are available to you, use them to find candidate moments, then review and adjust the footage yourself before creating a draft. AI can help locate passages; YouTube does not promise it will identify the most compelling or best-performing clip.
How to repurpose YouTube videos into clips with AI
- Choose a source you control. In YouTube Studio, open a video uploaded to your channel. Decide whether you want a Short, a standard video clip, or a teaser that directs viewers to the full documentary or episode.
- Look for a self-contained moment. A useful clip has a reason to keep watching: a clear question, a reveal, a demonstration, a reaction, or one complete story beat. YouTube’s creator guidance suggests looking for hooks, exciting or informative segments, actionable tutorial steps, and visually appealing moments. YouTube’s guidance on adapting long-form videos to Shorts also advises giving the clip enough context to work on its own.
- Open the extraction tool. In YouTube Studio, select the video and choose Clips and Shorts. Select transcript text or set the start and end points on the timeline. Where AI suggestions and a transcript outline are offered, use them to navigate and shortlist possible passages; then watch each passage in context and adjust its boundaries. YouTube’s Studio instructions describe transcript and timeline selection as the workflow.
- Shape the clip for its destination. For a Short, consider a 9:16 vertical crop, concise pacing, captions or text overlays, and framing that keeps the important subject visible. A documentary scene may need a sentence of setup before the key quote or reveal; cutting too tightly can make it confusing or misleading. Keep the source’s visual identity where it helps viewers recognize the series.
- Check captions and framing. YouTube Studio can use the transcript to generate captions for Shorts when available. Preview them, correct names and specialist terms, and adjust their style or position so they do not cover faces, on-screen evidence, or essential text. You can also turn captions off.
- Create a draft and publish deliberately. Preview the cut, add a clear title, and include a call to action that fits the material. YouTube recommends adding a link to the source video in the description. A Short created with this Studio tool can be associated automatically with its source video, except when the Short is private, unlisted, or Made for Kids.
- Review performance and iterate. Use YouTube Analytics to assess how viewers respond and test different kinds of moments or presentation. Treat the results as feedback, not a guarantee that repurposing will increase reach or traffic.
YouTube’s creator team describes Shorts as “a great way to preview your longer videos.” The full guidance recommends using the format to connect a short moment with the longer work.
Can AI automatically find clips in my YouTube video?
Sometimes, within YouTube Studio’s Clips and Shorts workflow. The AI suggestions and transcript outline can help you navigate a video and identify candidate sections. You remain responsible for choosing the final moment, checking the footage, and setting its boundaries. The official instructions do not claim that AI selects the clip most likely to perform well.
The suggestions and outline are not available everywhere. YouTube currently lists availability in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and in English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Use the mobile “Edit into a Short” route
For a public long-form video you uploaded, open it in the YouTube app, tap Remix, then Edit into a Short. Choose up to 60 seconds, add text or filters if needed, and continue through the upload flow. This is a quick extraction route rather than the transcript-and-AI workflow in Studio. Eligibility restrictions are listed in YouTube’s instructions for creating Shorts from your videos.

Rights, remixing, and documentary footage
Editing your own upload is different from remixing another creator’s video. The mobile “Edit into a Short” route described above is for your own eligible public upload. Remix access on other videos depends on YouTube’s tools, the creator’s settings, privacy, copyright ownership, and music licensing.

Using protected material in a Short made outside YouTube’s creation tools may lead to a Content ID claim or removal after a valid copyright takedown. Documentary footage, archival clips, narration, and music can each have separate rights. Permission to publish the original long video does not necessarily settle whether every element can be reused in a new Short. Review YouTube’s guidance on remixed content and confirm that you have the rights needed for the specific edit and music.

YouTube’s native workflow is a sensible first choice if you mainly need transcript-based selection, optional AI suggestions, captions, and a direct path to a Short. Consider a third-party editor only if you need a workflow the native tools do not provide. Before choosing one, check supported inputs, transcript accuracy for your language and terminology, vertical reframing controls, caption editing, export formats, privacy terms, and current cost.
