How to Stream a Pre-Recorded Video to YouTube Live from a Synology NAS

Use an encoder to play a video stored on your Synology NAS and send it to YouTube Live. See the setup, recommended settings, testing steps and Synology’s camera-broadcast limitation.

You can stream a video stored on a Synology NAS to YouTube Live by using an encoder to play the file and send its output to YouTube. The NAS can hold the recording, but the encoder—not the NAS’s documented Surveillance Station camera-broadcast feature—must turn that recording into a live feed.

How the setup works

The workflow has three parts: a video file stored on the NAS, an encoder that reads and plays that file, and a YouTube Live stream that receives the encoder’s output. The encoder may run on a computer or another compatible system that can access the NAS file. YouTube’s instructions establish the connection and streaming settings, but they do not validate a particular Synology Container Manager or FFmpeg recipe, hardware-acceleration setup, or NAS model. Check compatibility for the specific encoder and device you plan to use rather than assuming the NAS can encode the file itself.

Prepare the video and encoder

  1. Make the file accessible. Keep the recording on the NAS and ensure the device running the encoder can read it over your network. Check that the intended file plays from beginning to end and has the expected audio and duration.
  2. Choose an encoder that supports file playback and YouTube Live output. Configure it to play the recording while sending a live feed to YouTube. This is distinct from choosing a camera as a live source.
  3. Check your connection and settings. The encoder needs enough upload capacity for the selected stream profile. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity and checking stream health before relying on the setup.

Create the YouTube Live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s YouTube output settings. YouTube describes the key as the value that lets it accept the encoder’s feed. Treat it as a credential: do not show it in screenshots, public configuration files, example commands, or logs.
  3. Start the encoder before the planned broadcast. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, check it, then click Go live. A scheduled stream can be promoted in advance, and viewers can set reminders.

YouTube automatically archives streams that run for less than 12 hours. Do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically.

Choose protocol, codec and video settings

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Its encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs for applicable RTMP/RTMPS streams, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Use settings supported by both your encoder and the current YouTube guidance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Example profile YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate range Source and qualification
1080p at 30 fps 5–14 Mbps YouTube’s current encoder settings table, accessed 2026; recommendation for this resolution, frame rate and codec, not a universal bitrate.
720p at 30 fps 3–8 Mbps YouTube’s current encoder settings table, accessed 2026; recommendation for this resolution, frame rate and codec, not a universal bitrate.

These are ranges, not targets that fit every connection. Choose a bitrate your upload can sustain reliably, then test the stream and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators.

Test and monitor the broadcast

  • Test before the scheduled stream with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast.
  • Start the encoder well ahead of time and check the Live Control Room preview before selecting Go live.
  • Listen for the recording’s expected audio and confirm the picture, playback and duration. These file checks are practical precautions; they do not imply a specific NAS/encoder setup has been tested.
  • Monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast, as YouTube advises.

What Synology’s native Live Broadcast feature does

Synology’s Surveillance Station Live Broadcast instructions describe sending a selected camera stream to YouTube. The workflow asks you to provide the YouTube RTMP path and key, then choose a camera and stream profile; Synology’s help page says YouTube Live supports H.264 video for this feature. DSM 7.4 specifications likewise describe Live Broadcast as sending live camera streams from Surveillance Station to YouTube. These documents support a camera-to-YouTube workflow, not playback of a prerecorded NAS file. Do not select this feature expecting it to turn a stored video into a broadcast.

Troubleshooting

YouTube does not receive a signal

  • Check that the encoder is running and its output uses the stream URL and key for the intended YouTube stream.
  • Confirm that the key has not been mistyped or exposed and replaced. Copy the current key from Live Control Room if needed.
  • Verify that the encoder is configured for RTMPS or another protocol supported by the YouTube workflow and encoder.

The preview appears, but video or audio is wrong

  • Play the NAS file directly and confirm it is the intended recording, with the expected sound and duration.
  • Check that the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate and audio settings are supported and that its output matches your upload capacity.
  • Use YouTube’s stream-health information and test again before the scheduled start.

Surveillance Station does not show the recording

The documented Live Broadcast workflow selects a camera as its source. It is not a prerecorded-file player. Use an encoder workflow that can play a file from the NAS instead.
