1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo record a gameplay walkthrough for YouTube, capture the game in OBS Studio, check your game and microphone audio, record and review a short test, then edit, export, and upload the finished video in YouTube Studio. On a Windows PC, try OBS Game Capture first; for console gameplay sent to a computer, use a compatible capture device or a supported remote-play app. You do not need a capture card for PC gameplay.
Choose how to capture the game
Recording a PC game
On Windows, OBS recommends trying Game Capture first for DirectX or OpenGL games. Add it as a source in your scene and check the preview. If it does not capture your game, try OBS’s window or display capture options, which vary by operating system and setup.
Recording a console
To send a console’s picture to a computer, connect a compatible game capture device and add it in OBS as a Video Capture Source. Check that the device supports your console and the resolution and frame rate you intend to record; compatibility varies by model. This is a conditional accessory for a console-to-computer workflow, not a requirement for capturing PC games.
Where supported, you can instead run the console’s remote-play software on the computer and capture its window in OBS. This avoids a capture device but depends on the network connection and remote-play setup. A docked Nintendo Switch can use a compatible capture device; the Switch Lite cannot be docked, so it cannot use that hardware route.

Set up OBS and verify your audio
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use OBS’s initial configuration flow to choose output settings suited to your computer. Available quality presets and hardware encoders depend on the system; there is no single best recording configuration for every PC.
- Create a scene and add your source. Add Game Capture, a capture device as Video Capture Source, or a supported window/display capture source, depending on your setup. Confirm the game appears in the OBS preview before recording.
- Check the Audio Mixer. Play the game and speak into your microphone or headset. Confirm the game or desktop audio and microphone meters move. If the wrong device is active, select the intended input manually in OBS audio settings.
- Balance commentary and game audio. For a narrated walkthrough, make sure your voice is clear over the game sound. A separate microphone is optional if an existing headset or microphone produces usable audio.
- Set a recording destination. Choose a folder with enough free storage for the session. Recording quality affects file size as well as visual detail and computer load.
Record and review a short test
Record a few minutes of gameplay while speaking, then play the resulting file. OBS recommends testing before committing to a full recording. Check that the footage shows the game correctly, game audio and commentary are present and in sync, playback is smooth, and the file was saved where expected.
If the test stutters or the computer struggles, reduce the output demands using OBS’s available settings and make another test. Choose a setting your computer can sustain; a higher-quality preset is not useful if it makes the recording unusable.

Shape the walkthrough for viewers
Organize the video around the game, episode, objective, or problem being solved. Explain important decisions and make transitions or edits clear enough that viewers can follow the gameplay. This is editorial guidance, not a formal YouTube formatting rule.
If you plan to monetize gameplay, give the video an original contribution where appropriate—for example, clear commentary, substantive editing, or useful explanation. YouTube’s reused-content policy looks for significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value, and applies at the channel level. That policy is separate from copyright: make sure you have the rights needed for the game footage, music, and any other material you include.

Export and upload to YouTube
Use an upload-friendly export
YouTube’s encoding recommendations list MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and a frame rate matching the recording. Its recommended upload video bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate:
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended upload video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p, 24/25/30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p, 48/50/60 fps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p SDR, 24/25/30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p SDR, 48/50/60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p, 24/25/30 fps | 16 Mbps |
| 1440p, 48/50/60 fps | 24 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended upload bitrates, not required OBS recording bitrates. They are guidance rather than a guarantee of a particular result, and YouTube’s recommendations can change; check the current YouTube video and audio encoding specifications when exporting.

- The game is missing from the preview: Confirm you selected a capture source suited to the game and operating system. For Windows DirectX or OpenGL gameplay, try Game Capture first; for console input, verify the capture device connection and source selection.
- There is no game sound: Check whether the intended game or desktop audio source is active and whether its meter moves in the Audio Mixer. Select the correct device if needed.
- There is no commentary: Verify the intended microphone is selected and that its meter responds while you speak. Record another short clip to confirm the voice reaches the saved file.
- Voice and gameplay are out of sync: Check the test recording in a media player before the full session. If the mismatch persists, review your OBS audio-device configuration and test again.
- The recording stutters: Reduce recording quality or other output demands, then make another test. OBS settings need to suit the computer and capture path.
- A console capture device does not work: Check compatibility with the exact console and the intended resolution and frame rate. A capture card is not a universal accessory and support varies by device.
- Remote-play footage is choppy: Remote-play capture depends on network quality. Check the connection and test again, or consider a compatible capture device if that route fits your console.
- The upload looks different from the local file: Confirm the export follows YouTube’s format and frame-rate guidance and allow for YouTube processing. Compare the processed video after upload before sharing it widely.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a separate use case—keeping a prerecorded YouTube video or playlist live continuously—StreamNeo uploads and loops your video from the cloud. It does not record live gameplay or stream from a camera. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
