How to Schedule YouTube Live Streams With Streaming Software

Schedule your event in YouTube Studio, send the feed from streaming software, and confirm the preview before clicking Go live.

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio first, then use your encoder—such as OBS—to send video and audio at the appointed time. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and click Go live; scheduling the event alone does not start the broadcast.

Before you schedule: check channel eligibility

YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance if you need to check a restriction or verification status.

Schedule the stream in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
  2. Select Manage > Schedule stream.
  3. Choose Reuse settings to copy settings from a previous stream, or choose Create new for a fresh event.
  4. Review the title, description, date and time, audience setting, and privacy before saving. YouTube says a scheduled event may appear as upcoming in subscribers’ feeds, where viewers can choose Notify me. Privacy defaults vary by age: private for users aged 13–17 and public for users 18 and older, so verify the actual selection rather than relying on the default. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.

Scheduling creates the event and its watch page; the encoder supplies the live feed later. Share the scheduled event link if you want viewers to find the page in advance.

Connect streaming software and go live at the scheduled time

  1. At broadcast time, open the scheduled event in Live Control Room and locate its stream connection details.
  2. In your encoder, select YouTube as the streaming service if it is available. Otherwise, copy the stream URL into the encoder’s server field and the stream key into its key field.
  3. Start streaming from the encoder. Wait for the incoming video preview to appear in Live Control Room; then select Go live there to begin the public broadcast.
  4. When the event is over, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

For software such as OBS, the important sequence is the same: choose the scheduled YouTube event’s destination and key, start the encoder output, confirm the preview in Live Control Room, and then click Go live. The encoder’s start-stream button sends the feed; it does not replace YouTube’s final go-live action for the scheduled event. For the platform’s full encoder walkthrough, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Protect the stream key, especially when reusing settings

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not show it on screen, publish it, or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.

Reuse settings copies prior metadata, settings, and the stream key. YouTube allows changes after the event is created, but check the privacy, event details, and selected key every time rather than assuming the copied setup is right. If a key is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; replace the old key in the encoder before the next stream. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.

Pre-event checks to reduce avoidable failures

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are preparation recommendations, not a guarantee that a broadcast will be trouble-free. Use the lead time to check:

  • Event details: Confirm the date, time, title, audience and privacy setting in Live Control Room.
  • Connection and preview: Start the encoder early enough to confirm YouTube is receiving the feed and the preview looks correct before selecting Go live.
  • Access: Check that the event can be opened from your channel and watch page, including on a phone.
  • Audio and video: Test both, then monitor their quality throughout the broadcast.
  • Key: Confirm the encoder is using the key for this event, especially if you reused settings or recently reset a key.

You do not need expensive equipment just to begin live streaming; YouTube’s computer-streaming tips discuss typical equipment and testing in YouTube live streaming tips. A microphone or other production gear can be optional ways to improve a particular setup, not prerequisites for scheduling.

Optional: add a trailer to the scheduled event

A trailer is a promotion option, not a requirement for scheduling. YouTube says scheduled-stream trailers are available to creators with more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. The trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long and can be added from the scheduled stream’s Manage tab in Live Control Room. Check YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance for the current details.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your documentary channel needs a prerecorded video to loop as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than a one-time scheduled event, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service runs the playback in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not camera-based live production. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
