OBS can loop a single video or play a looping playlist, and it can be launched with the --startstreaming parameter. But restarting OBS is not a guarantee that the same YouTube Live event will resume without interruption. Set up looping and launch automation, then test the full crash-and-restart path in a controlled stream before relying on it.
What happens when OBS crashes?
OBS sends an encoder feed to YouTube using a server URL and stream key. If OBS exits, that feed stops. Launching OBS again can start the encoder, but OBS documentation does not promise that a restarted process will reconnect to the same YouTube event, restore the previous playlist position, or avoid a viewer interruption. YouTube may also require a manual Go live action for the event.
Treat these as separate recovery steps: restart the local OBS process, restore media playback, reconnect the encoder feed, and confirm YouTube is still receiving the intended event. Test each one rather than assuming that a successful OBS launch proves the whole stream recovered.
Set up a looping video or playlist in OBS
For one video: Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene where the video should play and add a Media Source.
- Select the video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Save the scene and confirm the file plays through its end and starts again.

For multiple videos: VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- Make sure VLC and OBS use the same bitness: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source, add the playlist files, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents this option as on by default.
- Preview the playlist and verify that it advances through the files and repeats.
Use media paths that will still exist when OBS restarts. Portable mode does not make the media files referenced by a scene collection portable; check the paths explicitly if you move the OBS setup or run it in portable mode.
Configure OBS to start streaming when launched
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter for starting a stream when OBS opens. It handles the launch action only; it is not a built-in process supervisor, retry policy, or guarantee that YouTube will keep the same event active after OBS exits. - Use your operating system’s scheduler or a process-monitoring tool to relaunch OBS after an unexpected exit, if that fits your setup. This is an implementation choice, not an OBS-provided crash-recovery guarantee.
- Include
--startstreamingin the OBS launch command or shortcut. - On Windows, set the automated launch’s working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - Confirm the intended OBS profile and scene load, and that the media files are available at their saved paths.
- Test the launch automation by closing OBS normally first. Then, in a controlled test event, terminate OBS and check what happens when it is launched again.
Do not assume the restart will restore the exact file or playlist position where playback stopped. Confirm where playback resumes during your test.
Check the YouTube event and encoder connection
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the intended stream’s server URL and stream key, then check that the corresponding values are configured in OBS. YouTube explains stream settings, reusable settings, and resetting a key in Manage live stream settings.
- Keep the stream key private: it is a credential that can authorize an encoder to send to your channel.
- Preview the received feed in Live Control Room before going live. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers connecting an encoder and previewing the stream.
- After OBS restarts, check whether YouTube is receiving the feed and whether the event still needs a manual Go live action. Reused stream settings can carry forward previous metadata and a stream key, so verify the event details rather than relying on what was copied.
For an unattended setup, do not treat the encoder reconnect as proof that viewers can see the stream. Check the event status and stream health in YouTube Studio.

Test recovery before depending on it
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet and checking backup rollover. That tests failover behavior; it does not certify that OBS will recover from a process crash or resume the same event. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Run a controlled test with the event setup you intend to use, and terminate and relaunch OBS.
- Verify that the playlist appears, advances, and resumes as expected.
- Check that OBS reconnects and that YouTube receives the intended event; note whether a manual Go live action is needed.
- Review stream health and real-time metrics in Live Control Room using YouTube’s live metrics guide.
- Check any local recording or archive for gaps or damage. YouTube also recommends monitoring and checking the local archive.
Troubleshoot a failed restart

A third-party Media Playlist Source plugin listing claims a capability to save the current file for playback after OBS restarts. That is a community plugin claim, not an end-to-end recovery guarantee. Check its current release compatibility and test it with your OBS version before depending on it.
