To add a solid color around a video that does not fill its canvas, change the canvas background or place a color layer beneath the clip. To replace the scene behind a person, first remove that background with a chroma key or background-removal tool, then put a solid color layer underneath. These are different edits: changing the canvas color does not cut out the recorded scene.
Choose the right kind of background change

Use the instructions for your editor and platform. The documented Canva workflow changes a design page, CapCut’s instructions cover desktop, and Apple’s cited instructions cover iMovie for Mac. Labels and availability may differ in other versions or mobile apps.
Fill the canvas in Canva or CapCut
Canva: change the page background
- Select the page background in your design.
- Choose Background color from the floating toolbar.
- Pick a solid color tile. Canva also offers gradient tiles.
This changes the page or design background; it does not, by itself, remove the original scene behind a person. Canva notes that adding or changing backgrounds is not available in Canva Docs. Canva’s background instructions
CapCut desktop: set a canvas color
- Import the video and place it on the timeline.
- Resize the video as needed.
- Choose Video > Canvas > Color and select a color for the exposed area.
CapCut also lists Blur and Pattern as canvas choices. Its documented steps are for desktop; check the current interface for your version. CapCut’s canvas instructions

Add a reusable solid-color clip in Premiere
- In the Project panel, select New Item > Color Matte.
- Match the matte’s width, height, timebase, and pixel aspect ratio to the sequence.
- Choose the color in the Color Picker, name the matte, and confirm.
- Place the matte on a video track below the footage it should appear behind. Adjust its duration to cover the required section.
A matte is a solid-color clip, so it can serve as a background, overlay, or transition. For a background, track order matters: the footage above it covers the matte wherever that footage is visible. Adobe’s Color Matte instructions (last updated August 18, 2026)
Replace a filmed background with a solid color
To change the scenery behind a person, first separate the subject from the original background. A canvas-color control or color matte alone will not do that. Chroma key works best when the footage was shot against a distinct green or blue backdrop.

Premiere: key out green or blue footage
- Put the replacement color matte on a lower video track and the subject footage above it.
- Apply Ultra Key to the subject footage.
- Use the effect’s eyedropper to sample the green or blue backdrop.
- Refine the result with the Matte Generation and Matte Cleanup controls, then adjust Spill Suppression to reduce color cast around the subject.
Adobe recommends an evenly lit green or blue screen and avoiding clothing similar to the background color. Uneven lighting and matching clothing can make clean separation harder. A physical green or blue backdrop is relevant to this filming-and-keying workflow; it is not needed to fill empty canvas space or use a color matte. iMovie for Mac: use Green/Blue Screen
- Place a solid-color or animated background clip in the timeline.
- Place the green-screen or blue-screen subject clip above it.
- Select the overlay and choose the Green/Blue Screen effect.
- Adjust the effect using its controls to improve the result.

Check the result before export
- For a canvas fill, check that the clip is positioned and scaled as intended and the color covers all exposed areas.
- For a color matte, confirm it sits below the footage and lasts for the full section that needs a background.
- For a keyed subject, inspect edges and areas with motion. If the outline looks rough or the subject carries a green or blue tint, refine the matte and spill controls.
- Review the whole edit: a setting that looks acceptable on one frame may need adjustment elsewhere in the clip.
