If OBS closes or freezes during a stream, first check whether it is a real application crash or a performance symptom such as lag, dropped frames, or a blank capture. For a genuine crash, start by isolating graphics-hook conflicts and OBS extensions, then check Windows capture features. Reduce GPU and encoding demand only when the symptoms point to overload. Change one thing at a time and retry the same action that triggered the problem.
First identify what is failing
OBS closing unexpectedly or showing a crash error is different from a stream that merely looks broken. Dropped frames are generally a network stability or bitrate issue; GPU overload is a rendering or encoding performance problem. Neither symptom by itself proves that OBS crashed. Note exactly what you see, and whether OBS itself closes, hangs, or remains open while the stream stops rendering. OBS’s stream connection guidance and encoding performance guidance distinguish these troubleshooting paths.
- OBS closes or becomes unresponsive: follow the crash-isolation steps below.
- OBS stays open but the stream stutters or drops frames: check connection stability, bitrate, and encoding performance rather than assuming an application crash.
- Capture is blank: investigate the capture method, application permissions, and GPU assignment; a blank source is not necessarily a crash.
Close applications that hook graphics
Third-party applications that hook graphics functions OBS also uses can cause crashes or unusual behavior. OBS specifically names MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, EVGA Precision, Discord and other voice-app overlays, and competing capture or recording programs as possible conflicts. OBS’s known application conflicts page also notes that D3DGear installs global DirectX hooks, so closing it may not be enough: the page says it must be uninstalled. It associates Dell Backup & Recovery and Alienware Alien Respawn with crashes when OBS opens a Browse dialog.
- Save anything important, then close overlays, on-screen display tools, other game capture or recording software, and other suspected graphics-hook utilities.
- Reproduce the same streaming action that previously triggered the crash.
- If the crash stops, reopen the closed applications one at a time, testing after each, to identify a likely conflict.
- If D3DGear is installed and closing it changes nothing, follow OBS’s guidance to uninstall it, then test again.
Make one change per test. Closing several applications and changing OBS settings together may stop the crash, but it makes the cause harder to identify.

Test OBS without third-party extensions
OBS safe mode is a useful isolation test when the basic application works but a plugin, script, or websocket integration might be involved. OBS says safe mode disables third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets. If streaming no longer triggers the problem in safe mode, suspect one of those components; re-enable them selectively and repeat the test. The OBS launch-parameters page documents both --safe-mode and --verbose.
- Close OBS.
- Find the OBS shortcut, right-click it, and open Properties.
- In the Target field, add a space after the quoted path to
obs64.exe, then add--safe-mode. Keep the existing path and quotation marks intact. - Apply the change, launch OBS with that shortcut, and reproduce the issue.
- After testing, remove
--safe-modefrom the Target field to return the shortcut to normal startup.
For a more detailed OBS log, add --verbose after the executable path using the same shortcut method. Use one parameter at a time when isolating the cause.

Check Windows 10 gaming capture settings
Windows Game DVR and background capture can conflict with hardware encoding such as NVENC or consume resources. OBS’s Windows gaming-features guidance recommends checking these settings. The label depends on the Windows 10 version: look under Settings > Gaming > Game DVR or Settings > Gaming > Captures. Turn off background recording or capture, then retry the stream. OBS’s Windows gaming-features troubleshooting page is dated 2021, so labels may differ on an updated installation.
Do not automatically turn off Game Mode. OBS says updated Windows 10 version 1809 or newer can leave it on, while older builds may need it disabled. Check your version first by pressing Windows key + R, entering winver, and pressing Enter. OBS discusses registry changes for older builds; because an incorrect registry edit can cause problems, do not apply one unless your Windows version matches the guidance and you are comfortable following the instructions carefully.

Reduce GPU and encoding demand when symptoms point to overload
If OBS remains open but rendering or encoding falls behind—or a crash occurs under heavy load—test lower demand. These steps address performance instability; they are not proof that overload caused every crash. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends these measures:
- Run OBS as administrator: right-click OBS and choose Run as administrator for a test.
- Free GPU capacity: close other GPU-heavy programs, cap the game’s frame rate, or enable V-Sync. Lower graphics settings if needed.
- Lower OBS output demand: reduce output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working reliably, test 30 fps.
- Simplify the scene: temporarily remove unnecessary sources, filters, and browser sources, then add them back one at a time.
Change one setting at a time and repeat the same workload. If a specific change prevents the failure, keep it only if the resulting image quality and scene behavior meet your needs.

On a laptop, check which GPU OBS uses
A laptop with integrated and high-performance graphics may assign OBS to the wrong GPU for the capture or streaming workload. OBS recommends using the high-power GPU in a multiple-GPU laptop configuration. This is a configuration check, not a universal crash fix. Its display-capture instructions identify a newer method that requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later; those version requirements apply to that display-capture compatibility detail, not to every OBS crash. OBS lists Windows 10 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its system requirements, but meeting minimum compatibility requirements does not mean a computer can handle every stream workload. The practical load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS’s system requirements page describes those dependencies. Do not buy replacement hardware based only on a crash: first isolate software conflicts and gather diagnostics.

If OBS still crashes, collect details before changing more
There is no single fix or universal crash-log interpretation that can diagnose an unseen computer. Save the error text and collect the details below before asking for help; they make it possible to distinguish a reproducible OBS crash from a capture, network, or performance symptom.
- The exact OBS error message, if one appears.
- Whether OBS closes, freezes, or stays open while rendering or streaming stops.
- The action that triggers the problem and whether it happens every time.
- Your OBS version and Windows build, including the result from
winver. - Your GPU model and graphics driver version.
- The OBS log or crash report associated with the failed session.
- Which isolation steps you tried and what changed after each one.
