OBS Studio and Camtasia are the clearly documented choices if you need a screen recording whose audio sources remain on separate tracks. OBS is free and configurable, but you must assign sources to tracks and enable those tracks. Camtasia combines recording and editing, with TechSmith documenting separate screen, camera, microphone, and system-audio tracks. Descript can capture computer audio during screen recording, but the available official documentation does not establish that its ordinary screen-recording workflow keeps each source on a separate track.
What multitrack audio means in a screen recording
Multitrack recording preserves audio sources as independent tracks in the resulting file or editable project. For example, you might keep microphone narration separate from computer or application audio so you can rebalance levels, mute a source, replace narration, or clean up voice audio without changing the other sound.
A recorder that captures a microphone and system sound together has recorded both sources, but has not necessarily isolated them. Before choosing a tool, check which sources it can separate, where you assign them, and whether the editor you plan to use preserves access to those tracks.
Best screen recorders for separate audio tracks
| Tool | What official documentation establishes | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Sources can be assigned to recording tracks, with selected tracks enabled in output settings. | People who want a free, open-source, configurable recorder and are comfortable setting up audio routing. | Track assignments and output-track selection are manual. A standard video player may play only one track. |
| Camtasia | TechSmith documents separate screen, camera, system-audio, and microphone tracks with independent editing. | People who want recording and editing in an integrated product. | These are vendor feature descriptions; current price and detailed OS-specific limits are not established here. |
| Descript | Its desktop recorder can capture system-wide computer audio while recording a screen; its web recorder can capture audio from a specific browser tab. | People who need computer-audio capture and will verify the track workflow they need. | Audio capture alone does not establish separate tracks in ordinary screen recordings. Descript Rooms multitrack recording is a remote-recording use case. |
OBS Studio: best for configurable, free multitrack capture
The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as free, open-source recording and live-streaming software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its multitrack workflow lets you assign audio sources to tracks and choose which tracks the recording includes. It is a strong choice if you want control over source routing and are willing to configure it rather than expect each source to be separated automatically. See the OBS Studio product page and the OBS multiple audio track recording guide.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Camtasia: best for an integrated recorder and editor
TechSmith says Camtasia can record screen, camera, system audio, and microphone on separate tracks, then let you adjust those elements independently in editing. Its feature page also advertises 4K screen capture. These are vendor-stated features, not independent test results. Current pricing and precise operating-system-specific limits are not established here. See Camtasia’s multitrack recorder feature page and Camtasia’s product page.
Descript: capture is not proof of separation
Descript’s help documentation distinguishes desktop capture of system-wide computer audio from web capture of audio in a selected browser tab. That tells you audio can be captured; it does not, by itself, confirm that microphone and computer audio are preserved as separate tracks in the standard screen recorder. Descript’s multitrack description for Rooms concerns remote recording, a separate workflow. If separate tracks are essential, confirm the current screen-recording export or project behavior before relying on it. See Descript’s computer-audio help article and its feature overview.

How to record your screen with separate audio tracks in OBS
OBS requires deliberate source-to-track assignment. Its guide uses track 1 for a mix that plays conveniently in ordinary players and tracks 2–6 for separated sources. You can use fewer tracks if you only need, for example, microphone and desktop audio.
- Add and check your audio sources. In the OBS main window, add or select the microphone and desktop or application audio sources you intend to record. Confirm activity in the Audio Mixer while speaking or playing sound. If a source does not appear or its meter does not move, fix that input before setting track assignments.
- Open Advanced Audio Properties. In the Audio Mixer, open the source menu and choose Advanced Audio Properties. Locate each source’s track checkboxes.
- Assign tracks by source. Enable track 1 for sources that should be included in a convenient mixed playback track. Assign the microphone and system audio to their own additional tracks as needed—for example, microphone on track 2 and system audio on track 3. A source may be assigned to track 1 and a separate track at the same time, so the file can contain both a quick-listen mix and isolated sources.
- Enable the recording tracks. Open Settings → Output and select the wanted audio tracks in the recording section. Track assignment in Advanced Audio Properties does not help if the corresponding tracks are not enabled for recording.
- Record a short test and inspect it in an editor. Speak while computer audio plays, make a brief recording, and open it in an editor that can select audio tracks. Check that each source is present on the intended track and that the mixed track sounds as expected before recording a longer session.
Why track 1 can matter
The OBS Project’s “Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide,” dated 2023-07-14, warns: “It is important to note that all standard video players will only play back one audio track at a time so if you are not planning on processing every video through an editor before publishing it, send all of your audio sources to track 1 like you see in the example below.” A player that selects only one track can make other sources seem absent even though they are present in the file. Keep a mixed track for straightforward playback if that suits your publishing workflow, and use a multitrack-capable editor when you need to work with the isolated sources.

Choosing between OBS and Camtasia
- Choose OBS when configurable source routing and a free, open-source tool matter most, and you are comfortable managing track assignments and editing afterward.
- Choose Camtasia when you want the documented screen, camera, microphone, and system-audio tracks within an integrated recording-and-editing product.
- Evaluate Descript carefully if you need only system or tab audio capture. Do not treat its Rooms multitrack capability as confirmation that ordinary screen recordings separate those sources.
These comparisons reflect the vendors’ documentation, not hands-on testing. Current prices, detailed platform-specific recording behavior, and independent performance comparisons are not established here; check each vendor’s current product information for the operating system and workflow you plan to use.
Common problems and fixes
- The recording has sound, but narration and computer audio are mixed. In OBS, open Advanced Audio Properties and assign each source to a separate track; then confirm those tracks are enabled under Settings → Output.
- A player seems to show only one source. Standard video players may play only one audio track at a time. Open the recording in a multitrack-capable editor or check the player’s audio-track selector.
- A source is missing from the recording. Check that its meter moves in OBS, that its track checkbox is selected, and that the same track is enabled in the recording output settings. Make another short test before an important capture.
- You expect Descript’s screen recording to provide isolated tracks. Its documented ability to capture computer audio does not establish that separation. Verify the current screen-recording workflow specifically; do not substitute Rooms documentation for that check.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings rather than capture a new screen session, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is not screen-recording software and does not stream from a camera.
