Use OBS scenes as ready-made layouts for different moments in a broadcast, then switch between them deliberately. Build each scene from sources, use Studio Mode to prepare the next layout without putting it on air, and test the full YouTube connection before viewers arrive.
Plan scenes around the moments in your broadcast
A scene is a layout selected within OBS; it is not a separate YouTube broadcast. Start with only the layouts your program needs. For a documentary discussion or live premiere, that might mean a welcome screen, the main video or desktop, a camera-and-discussion layout, a break screen, and an ending screen. Name each scene clearly so you can identify it quickly while live.
OBS names scenes and sources in the same interface, so use distinct names rather than assigning the same label to a scene and a source. The OBS Overview Guide explains the core scene and transition workflow.
Build each layout with sources
In the Sources dock, add the material that belongs in the selected scene. Depending on the layout, that can include a game or window capture, camera or capture card, image, text, browser overlay, or media source. Position and size each source in the preview.

- Select the scene you want to build in the Scenes dock.
- In Sources, use the add control to choose the source type and configure the relevant capture device, file, or content.
- Arrange the source in the preview. Sources higher in the list appear over sources below them; drag items to change their stacking order.
- Use the eye control beside a source to hide or show it in that scene, then verify the visible layout in the preview.
- Repeat for each scene, checking that text, overlays, and important picture elements are not obscured.
OBS’s Sources Guide describes source ordering and visibility. Hiding a source is not a reliable way to save system resources: OBS notes that many sources continue to require resources while not visible.
Switch scenes safely with Studio Mode
Studio Mode separates the current live output from the scene you are preparing. The program side shows what viewers currently see; the edit or preview side lets you select and adjust the next scene. When it is ready, use Transition to put it on air. OBS states that viewers cannot see whether Studio Mode itself is enabled; they see the output you send, so the key precaution is not transitioning an unfinished preview.

- Enable Studio Mode in OBS.
- Select the next scene on the edit/preview side and check its sources, framing, and overlays.
- Choose the intended transition and duration, then activate Transition when ready.
- Confirm the new scene appears on the live/program side before preparing another change.
For scenes that are already prepared, direct scene selection can be simpler. If you prefer keyboard operation, configure OBS hotkeys to switch to specific scenes; OBS’s Overview Guide covers hotkeys and Studio Mode. The guide also notes that Cut and Fade are available at first launch, with Swipe, Slide, Fade to Color, and Luma Wipe among the other transition options. Select a transition and duration that suit the program’s pacing; no single transition is right for every show.
Keep Scene Collections and Profiles distinct
Use a Scene Collection for a distinct set of scenes and sources, such as a gaming broadcast versus a podcast or a recording-only layout. Scene Collections also contain Global Audio Sources configured under Settings → Audio. Use a Profile for stream, video, and output settings: a Profile does not store scenes.

Neither should be treated as a complete backup of every system setting. OBS’s documentation explains Scene Collections and Profiles separately.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test before going live
YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for screen sharing or gameplay, external audio/video hardware, and advanced productions with multiple cameras and microphones. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and provide the encoder with the server URL and stream key when the encoder does not offer a direct YouTube selection. Treat the stream key like a password: do not reveal it in a screen capture or publish it. YouTube’s current help guidance says first-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so allow for that when planning a first broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy the server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select YouTube if available, or enter the server URL and stream key as appropriate for the connection method.
- Before the audience arrives, make a short test recording or stream, as OBS recommends in its Quick Start Guide.
- Check that the intended capture is visible, overlays are legible, audio meters respond, and the Studio Mode transition changes the live/program output as expected.
- Confirm that YouTube’s stream preview appears before you begin the public broadcast.
Keep the scene setup responsive
Large or complex Scene Collections can make OBS less responsive, and sources may consume resources even when hidden. If performance suffers, limit expensive sources—especially excessive Browser Sources—and split a large collection into focused collections. OBS does not specify a universal hardware threshold for this; the impact depends on the production and system. See its encoding performance troubleshooting guidance.
