For most iPhone screen recordings, start with Apple’s built-in Screen Recording control in Control Center. It captures the screen without an extra app and saves the result to Photos. Consider a third-party app only if you need features such as recording-quality controls, a face-camera reaction, in-app editing, or a different export workflow.
Which iPhone screen recorder should you choose?
- For a straightforward tutorial, app demonstration, or gameplay clip: Try Apple’s built-in recorder first. It includes a microphone option for narration.
- For more recording controls or a face-camera feature: Compare third-party listings, such as Screen Recorder, to see whether the advertised controls fit your needs.
- For commentary, editing, or sharing options: Record it! :: Screen Recorder advertises those features, but check its current sharing limits and terms before relying on them.
The app descriptions below are storefront claims, not the results of a hands-on comparison. They do not establish which app produces the most reliable or highest-quality recording.
Record your iPhone screen with Apple’s built-in tool
- Open Control Center. If Screen Recording is not there, add the control using the Control Center customization options available on your iPhone.
- Tap Screen Recording. After the three-second countdown, use your iPhone as usual.
- To record your voice, press and hold the Screen Recording control, turn on Microphone, then start recording.
- Stop the capture using the recording indicator or Screen Recording control. Find the saved video in Photos, under the Screen Recordings media type.
Apple notes that some apps may block recording their content and that screen recording cannot run at the same time as screen mirroring. Apple states: “Some apps might not allow you to record their content, and you can’t record your screen and use screen mirroring at the same time.” Apple Support’s instructions give the same basic workflow and restrictions.
Third-party iPhone screen recording apps
These are examples with different advertised feature sets, not ranked winners. Confirm current compatibility, features, subscription terms, and limits in the App Store listing for your device and region.

The US App Store listing advertises resolution, bitrate, and frame-rate controls; face-camera reactions; dual-camera and audio recording; and an integrated editor. When accessed October 3, 2026, the listing showed 4.5 stars from 34K ratings and displayed weekly and yearly premium subscriptions, including a three-day free trial. The displayed prices were $4.99 weekly and $49.99 annually. Ratings, availability, features, and subscription terms can change; these storefront details are not a performance assessment.
Record it! :: Screen Recorder
The US App Store listing advertises configurable recording quality and encoder/audio options, commentary, editing and organization, plus exports to Photos, AirDrop, Files, email, or compatible apps. It also says sharing is limited to 10-minute videos and that Record It! Pro enables longer sharing. When accessed October 3, 2026, the listing showed 4.6 stars from 454K ratings. These are listing snapshots, not independent tests, and the stated limit or features may change.

How to compare apps for your recording
Capture controls
Decide whether the built-in recorder is sufficient or whether you specifically need controls for resolution, bitrate, frame rate, encoder, or audio. A listing may advertise a control without establishing the results it will produce on your particular iPhone.
Narration and camera
If you only need spoken explanation, Apple’s built-in microphone option may be enough. If you want your face visible or want dual-camera recording, look for those features in the current app listing and verify device limitations.

Editing and export
Check whether you need to trim, crop, rotate, change speed, or add transitions before sharing. Also compare the destination you need: Apple’s recording goes to Photos, while third-party apps may offer other exports. Verify any length restrictions before recording a long session.
Compatibility and restrictions
Check the current iOS and device requirements in the App Store. Some apps may block screen capture regardless of which recorder you use, and recording is unavailable while screen mirroring is active.

When app-specific recording capabilities matter
Apple’s developer sample describes a system content-sharing picker for selected content, with controls for audio, recording, and camera. It discusses saving a recording to a file, a rolling buffer of up to 15 seconds, and camera preview during in-app captures; the sample requires a device running iOS 27 or later. This is developer material describing platform capabilities, not a consumer app comparison or a guarantee that a particular screen-recording app offers those functions.

Before capturing or sharing a video, consider whether you have permission to record and redistribute the content, especially music, films, or other copyrighted material. An app’s ability to capture a screen does not itself grant rights to the content. Apple also warns that some apps do not allow their content to be recorded.
