Open the app’s video or background effects before joining—or from its video menu during a call—then choose blur or a background image. Availability and labels vary by app version, device, and organizational settings.
Choose blur or a replacement background
Blur softens the room behind you while keeping the real scene. It is a useful first choice if you want to hide room details and do not need to show a different setting. A replacement background displays a selected image instead. Software separation can make mistakes around hair, glasses, hands, or movement, and blur should not be treated as a guarantee that every detail is concealed.
Zoom explicitly supports background replacement without a green screen; Teams and Google Meet also offer built-in background effects. The exact controls and availability depend on your app, device, and—in workplace accounts—administrator settings.
Change the background in your meeting app
Zoom
- Before a meeting, open Zoom’s video or background settings and choose Blur to soften the room. During a meeting, open the video menu and select the background option.
- To show a different scene, use the same background controls to select or upload an image or video, if available.
- Preview the result. Zoom says an effect can persist as the default for future meetings, so check the setting again if you do not want it to carry over.
For image backgrounds, matching the image’s aspect ratio to your camera frame can help avoid an awkward crop. Zoom gives 16:9 as an example in its virtual background setup guidance. Without a green screen, Zoom cautions that the person’s edges may be less sharply defined and the effect uses more system resources.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Microsoft Teams
- Open Background settings before joining or during the meeting.
- Choose Blur, a built-in background, or a custom background if that option is available, then apply the change as prompted.
Microsoft’s Teams background guidance describes changing the effect before or during a meeting and notes that a selection can persist into future meetings. Feature rollout may be gradual, and background effects are not supported in optimized VDI.
Google Meet
- Open the meeting’s visual effects or background controls before joining or while in the meeting.
- Choose background blur or a background effect, then check the preview.
Google’s Meet background and visual effects guidance warns that participant video may be cropped, so other people might not see every part of an effect or background.

Get cleaner results without buying a screen
- Use even lighting. Zoom’s guidance says, “Use uniform lighting and color.” It recommends illuminating your face and some of the background; NVIDIA likewise says lighting the subject helps segmentation quality.
- Keep the camera steady. Frame yourself with some space around your head and shoulders, and preview the effect in the app and device you will actually use.
- Check the edges in motion. Look for masking errors around hair, glasses, hands, and when you move. Software effects vary, so a still preview may not show every issue.
- Choose an image that fits the frame. An image with a different shape from your camera view may be cropped. Check what meeting participants can see.
Lighting and framing are practical setup suggestions, not guarantees: software, hardware, and camera conditions all affect the result.
When a green screen or another tool is worth considering
A physical green screen is optional, not a requirement. Zoom says a solid, contrasting screen can improve sharpness and definition around the person. If you use one, light it evenly, choose a distinct color, and avoid clothing that matches the screen. A green-screen backdrop or solid-color curtain may be worth the extra space and setup if cleaner replacement edges matter more than convenience.

If your meeting app does not offer the effect, NVIDIA Broadcast is a separate option with blur and background replacement for compatible setups. It is designed to work with video-conferencing applications, but it will not suit every computer: check NVIDIA’s current Broadcast information and setup guidance for hardware and app compatibility. NVIDIA notes that performance depends on factors including GPU, camera resolution, frame rate, and the number of effects in use.
Why background effects may be missing or look wrong
- No effects control is visible: Check whether the feature is available on your device and app version, and whether an organization setting limits it. In Teams, effects are not supported in optimized VDI, and feature rollout can be gradual.
- The outline looks ragged: Improve even lighting on your face and some of the room, then preview again. Without a green screen, Zoom says replacement edges may be less sharp.
- The effect slows or strains the computer: Close unnecessary applications and try a simpler effect. Zoom says no-screen replacement needs more system resources; NVIDIA says performance varies with hardware and the number of effects used.
- The background is cut off: Try an image closer to your camera frame’s aspect ratio and check the meeting preview. Google Meet notes that participant video may be cropped.
- The effect works before joining but changes later: Check whether the selection persists as the default for future meetings, and reset it in the app’s background settings if needed.
Compare the practical options
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in blur | Hiding room detail quickly | Keeps the real scene, softened; availability depends on app, device, and settings. |
| Built-in image replacement | Showing a different scene | Without a green screen, Zoom says edges may be less sharp and system demands higher. |
| Separate webcam-effects software | Using effects with compatible calling or streaming apps | Hardware and app compatibility matter; performance varies. |
| Physical green-screen backdrop | Improving replacement edge definition | Requires extra setup and space; it is not necessary for software backgrounds. |
