For an FFmpeg stream sent to YouTube Live over RTMP, the documented recovery approach is to wrap the output in FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer and enable its recovery options. The separate -reconnect family applies to HTTP connections; it is not a general switch for a failed RTMP output. FIFO recovery is an attempt to resume sending, not a guarantee of gap-free playback or that YouTube will preserve the same live event.
First identify which connection dropped
FFmpeg may be receiving input from one connection and sending output over another. Identify which side failed before changing options:
- HTTP input failed: FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options may be relevant to reconnecting that input.
- RTMP output to YouTube failed: the FFmpeg documentation’s recovery example uses the FIFO output muxer.
These approaches address different connections. Adding HTTP reconnect flags to an RTMP output command does not make those flags an RTMP-output recovery mechanism. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation and the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.
Recover an RTMP output with the FIFO muxer
FFmpeg’s documentation gives this generic RTMP pattern. It is an example to adapt, not a verified YouTube command; the example URL is not YouTube’s ingest address.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://INGEST_HOST/live/STREAM_KEY
Replace INPUT with your actual input and rtmp://INGEST_HOST/live/STREAM_KEY with the ingest destination and stream key configured for your YouTube live event. Keep the input, stream mapping, codecs, and other output settings appropriate to your workflow. Do not treat this illustrative command as copy-paste-ready without checking that its options fit your installed FFmpeg build.
What the recovery options do
-f fifoselects the FIFO output muxer;-fifo_format flvspecifies the format used for the output inside the FIFO.-attempt_recovery 1enables attempts to recover after a temporary output failure.-recovery_wait_time 1sets a one-second wait between recovery attempts in the documented example. The documentation describes attempts continuing while processing continues.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1allows packets to be dropped if the FIFO overflows. That can mean missing content during an outage; it is not a promise to buffer everything until the connection returns.
The example demonstrates generic RTMP output recovery. It does not establish how YouTube will handle a particular disconnect, whether a live event will remain active, or whether viewers will see uninterrupted audio and video.

Check your FFmpeg build before using the syntax
Option availability and accepted syntax can depend on the installed FFmpeg version and build. Check the documentation or help output for that exact installation before changing a running command. For case-specific troubleshooting, the useful details are the FFmpeg version/build, operating system, input type, and complete current command, with the stream key redacted.
Use HTTP reconnect options only for an HTTP connection
FFmpeg documents these options for the HTTP protocol, so they may apply when the failing side is an HTTP input and the relevant HTTP protocol is in use:

reconnect: reconnect after a disconnect before end-of-file.reconnect_at_eof: treat end-of-file as an error and reconnect; documented as useful for live or endless streams.reconnect_on_network_error: reconnect on TCP or TLS errors during connection setup.reconnect_on_http_error: retry selected HTTP response codes.reconnect_streamed: allow reconnects on errors for streamed or non-seekable inputs.
These are not substitutes for the FIFO pattern when FFmpeg’s RTMP output to YouTube is the connection that dropped. The FFmpeg HTTP implementation source lists defaults for its current rolling master branch, including reconnect-delay limits. Those implementation defaults may differ from a packaged or older installed release, and they should not be treated as FIFO or RTMP settings.
Know what -re does—and does not do
-re reads input at its native frame rate (a read rate of 1). It can be useful to pace a file as a simulated live stream, but it does not reconnect a dropped network output. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation warns against using it with an actual capture device or live input because it may cause packet loss. Check the FFmpeg command-line documentation and use it only when it suits the input type.

Troubleshoot a failed recovery
| Symptom or question | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
The command has -reconnect, but the RTMP output still fails. |
Is the failing connection HTTP input or RTMP output? | If the output to YouTube is RTMP, use the FIFO recovery approach rather than assuming HTTP options cover it. |
| The command rejects a FIFO option. | Does the installed FFmpeg build support the muxer and option syntax? | Check help or documentation for that exact build; do not assume a current documentation page matches an older or differently packaged binary. |
| The stream resumes but has a gap or missing packets. | The FIFO example enables packet dropping on overflow, and a network interruption can disrupt delivery. | Expect that recovery may not be gap-free. The cited documentation does not promise uninterrupted playback. |
| The source is a capture device or live input. | Is -re being used to pace an already-live source? |
FFmpeg cautions against using -re with actual capture or live input; it is not a reconnect setting. |
| The connection recovers but the YouTube event does not behave as expected. | The example is generic RTMP guidance, not a YouTube-specific session guarantee. | Check the status of the live event and ingest configuration in YouTube; do not assume FFmpeg recovery guarantees that YouTube will preserve the event or avoid a playback gap. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than maintain an FFmpeg process at home, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your uploads as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. It attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
