Either use an AI tool that replaces the backdrop from a text prompt, or remove the existing background, then place a generated image or other scene behind the isolated subject. The right workflow depends on whether you want the tool to invent the scene or you already have a background asset.
Choose between replacing the backdrop and removing it
These workflows are related, but they are not the same. A prompt-led replacement asks an AI editor to change the setting behind the subject. A background-removal workflow cuts out the subject; you then add a separate image, video, or color beneath it in an editor.
- Choose prompt-based replacement when you want to describe a new scene and have the tool generate it behind the subject.
- Choose removal and compositing when you want control over the background asset, or want to build the scene yourself in an editor.
- Use chroma key when the footage was recorded against a consistent green or blue screen. It is one method, not a universal requirement.
For documentary footage, consider whether the new setting could mislead viewers about where or when a real event occurred. If a generated background changes the apparent context of factual footage, label the edit clearly.
Use Runway Change Backdrop for a prompt-generated scene
Runway’s Change Backdrop app describes a workflow for uploading a short video, writing a backdrop description, and generating a result with the new scene behind the subject. Runway currently states a five-second input limit and a cost of 15 credits per second; it says Apps are available to Standard plan users and above. It also says Change Backdrop is available in Unlimited Explore mode without consuming credits while using that mode. These plan, credit, and duration details can change, so check the Change Backdrop page before starting.

- Prepare a clear source clip. Use well-lit footage with a visible subject and enough separation from the original background. Runway advises using high-quality image or video input to avoid morphing and artifacts.
- Open Change Backdrop and upload the clip. The app’s stated input limit is five seconds. For a longer sequence, you may need to work with a shorter section or use a different workflow.
- Describe one specific setting. Keep the prompt direct: for example, “A quiet archival research room, soft window light from the left, neutral colors.” A single coherent scene and lighting direction gives the tool less to reconcile than several competing instructions.
- Generate and review the whole result. Check the subject outline, hair, hands, fast movement, and lighting across the clip, not just in a still frame. Watch for edges that flicker, background elements that warp, or changes to the subject’s appearance.
- Revise if needed. Try a simpler prompt or a cleaner source clip if the result distorts. Runway says outputs from its apps can be chained by downloading one app’s result and uploading that file into another.
Use Runway Edit Studio for longer or multi-shot edits
Runway describes Edit Studio as a prompt-based experience for transforming existing traditional or generated footage, powered by Aleph 2.0. Its help page lists removing or replacing backgrounds among its uses and says it can work across single shots or multi-shot sequences up to 30 seconds. That stated sequence limit is separate from the five-second input limit Runway gives for Change Backdrop; do not assume the two workflows share the same constraints. Remove the background, then add your own in Adobe Express
Adobe Express documents removing a video background, not generating a custom replacement in that same action. After isolating the subject, add a background as a separate editing step. Adobe’s help article, last updated April 28, 2026, gives this sequence:

- Start a video project, upload footage, or choose a template.
- Select the video on the canvas.
- In the Video panel, select Remove background.
- Add a separate background asset or color to the project and position it behind the isolated footage.
- Play through the result and inspect the subject edges and motion before exporting.
The documented instruction is: “Select the video and then select Remove background in the Video panel.” See Adobe Express background-removal help for the current interface.
Use CapCut to remove a background and generate or select a replacement
CapCut’s desktop instructions combine removal and replacement: remove the existing background, then generate an AI image or choose an asset from its background library. The exact export controls can depend on the product version and route you use.

- Import the video into a CapCut desktop project.
- Select the clip and choose Video > Remove BG > Auto removal.
- If the cutout needs refinement, use the custom-removal controls described by CapCut.
- Generate a background with the AI image function or select one from the built-in background library.
- Place the background below the isolated subject in the timeline, then play the full clip and check for edge problems or visual inconsistencies.
- Export using the controls available in your version. CapCut documents transparent export and output controls, but available settings may depend on the export route and product version.
For footage recorded against a consistent green or blue screen, CapCut says to switch to Chroma key and select the key color. Its instructions also describe placing a solid color, image, or video behind the removed subject. See CapCut’s background-removal instructions for the documented workflow.

CapCut advises comparing ease of use, output quality and resolution, special features such as chroma key, and free-tier limits. That is the vendor’s selection guidance, not an independent quality comparison. Check each product’s current clip limits, access requirements, credit use, and export controls before committing to a workflow.

Check the result before using it
Automatic cutouts and generated backdrops can look convincing in a preview and still fail across moving footage. Inspect the complete clip at normal playback speed and pause on difficult moments.
- Edges: Look around hair, fingers, clothing, and objects that overlap the subject.
- Motion: Check fast gestures and turns for flickering, holes, or background bleed.
- Lighting: See whether the subject’s light and shadows fit the new scene. A mismatch can make a clean cutout look pasted on.
- Continuity: For multi-shot work, check whether the backdrop and subject treatment stay consistent from shot to shot.
- Context: For factual or documentary footage, do not present a generated setting as the actual location. Make material edits clear to viewers.
Troubleshooting common problems
