For a Kick streamer who wants to go live and save a local recording, OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop are the strongest documented starting points. Kick supports both: OBS uses a custom server URL and stream key, while Streamlabs offers a direct Kick account connection. Streamlabs’ documentation also details recording controls such as selective recording, replay buffer, multitrack audio, and local-file settings. Neither tool can be called universally best for performance without testing it on your computer.

What to choose

Need Best fit from the documented workflows Why
You want to configure Kick manually with a server URL and stream key OBS Studio Kick’s setup guide documents OBS’s custom streaming service workflow.
You prefer to connect your Kick account and want documented recording controls Streamlabs Desktop Kick documents a direct account connection; Streamlabs describes selective recording, replay buffer, multitrack audio, and configurable local output.
You want another Kick-supported desktop option XSplit or MELD Kick names both as supported applications, but equivalent current recording-workflow detail is not established here.

This is a workflow comparison, not a performance ranking. Your encoder choice, computer, upload capacity, and recording settings affect the result.

Kick’s stream-output requirements

Kick’s May 2026 guidance specifies these livestream limits. They constrain what you send to Kick; they are not stated limits on the resolution or format of a separate local recording.

Setting Kick guidance
Video codec H.264/x264; H.265 is unsupported
Rate control CBR; VBR is unsupported
Maximum bitrate 8,000 kbps
Maximum resolution 1920×1080
Maximum frame rate 60 fps
Audio Stereo, up to 48 kHz

These are ceilings, not a promise that every connection or computer can sustain the maximum. Kick advises keeping bitrate within your connection’s upload capacity. Its Help Center explains: “CBR keeps your stream’s data rate steady.”

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up OBS Studio for Kick

  1. Get the connection details. In your Kick creator dashboard, locate the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast on your channel.
  2. Open OBS’s stream settings. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the custom service option, then enter Kick’s server URL and stream key. Labels can vary between OBS versions.
  3. Set a compliant output. Configure the stream encoder for H.264, CBR, and output no higher than 8,000 kbps, 1920×1080, and 60 fps. Use stereo audio at no more than 48 kHz. Choose lower settings if your upload capacity or computer calls for them.
  4. Make a short test. Start a brief stream and local recording, then check the Kick preview and the saved file. Listen for audio clipping or missing sources and watch for dropped frames or instability before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.

Set up Streamlabs Desktop for Kick and recording

  1. Connect Kick. In Streamlabs Desktop, use its Kick account connection flow and authorize the account as prompted. Kick’s guide documents this direct connection rather than manual URL-and-key entry.
  2. Choose what to record. Streamlabs describes selective recording, replay buffer/instant replay, and assignment of audio inputs across up to six tracks. Configure these only if they match your editing workflow; separate tracks can make later audio adjustment easier.
  3. Choose local recording options. Streamlabs lets you configure the recording destination path, format, resolution, and encoder. Confirm the destination drive has enough available space for the recording you intend to keep.
  4. Check stream and recording together. Recording while streaming adds work for your computer. Streamlabs distinguishes recording-only recommendations from simultaneous stream-and-record settings and advises checking system performance. Make a short combined test and adjust if the computer struggles; there is no setting that guarantees the same outcome on every system.

Kick VODs and local recordings are different

Kick says an OBS stream VOD is saved to your channel page after the stream ends. A local recording is a separate file saved to a destination you configure in your recording application. A channel VOD is convenient for replay on Kick; a local file gives you a copy to retain or edit. If storage space is a concern, check the available space and recording settings before a long session rather than assuming the two copies are interchangeable.

Copyright, channel rules, and recording responsibly

Recording software does not grant rights to material in your broadcast. Make sure you have permission to use the music, video clips, images, and other content you stream or record, and follow Kick’s current platform rules. A local copy can preserve material that later becomes unavailable on a channel, so review what your recording captures before publishing or redistributing it.

Troubleshoot connection, lag, and recording issues

The encoder will not connect

  • Check that the stream key and server URL are correct. If you reset the key, update it in OBS or reconnect the account in Streamlabs.
  • Confirm the encoder uses H.264 and CBR and that output stays within Kick’s stated limits.
  • Update OBS or Streamlabs; Kick warns that older software versions may stop connecting as its infrastructure changes.
  • Check whether antivirus, firewall, or network restrictions are blocking the connection. Keep the stream key private while troubleshooting.

The stream is rejected or unstable

  • Verify H.264, CBR, a bitrate at or below 8,000 kbps, resolution no higher than 1920×1080, frame rate no higher than 60 fps, and stereo audio no higher than 48 kHz.
  • If the stream lags, reduce output settings to suit your upload capacity and computer. The platform maximum is not a recommended minimum.
  • Run a short test at the settings you plan to use and check both the live output and the recording.

The local file is missing, incomplete, or has the wrong audio

  • In Streamlabs, verify the recording path, format, resolution, and encoder, then confirm the selected drive is available and has free space.
  • Check that the intended sources and audio inputs are included in the recording. If using multitrack audio, confirm track assignments before the broadcast.
  • For simultaneous streaming and recording, monitor system performance and lower settings if the computer cannot keep up.
