A restart only confirms that systemd tried to start FFmpeg again—it does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Check the service logs and YouTube Live Control Room separately.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
Restart=on-failure tells systemd to restart a service after a nonzero exit and certain abnormal failures. It does not restart a service that an administrator deliberately stops with systemctl stop. The systemd service manual also documents restart delays and start-rate limiting: repeated failures can cause restart attempts to be limited.
This is process-level recovery. It can help when FFmpeg exits, but it does not by itself fix an invalid stream key, a bad input path, a network outage, or an output connection problem that leaves FFmpeg running. Nor does a new FFmpeg process establish that YouTube has accepted its output.
Prepare the YouTube destination and FFmpeg command
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the intended live stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering these values in an encoder. If you want to use RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS address for the stream and use it only if your installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol; see YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use the actual absolute path to FFmpeg and the real input file or other input source for your setup.
- Supply the codec, output format, and destination arguments appropriate to your source and encoding requirements. The example below is illustrative, not a tested universal FFmpeg command.
- Protect the stream key. Do not put a real key in a public unit file, article, or shared log. Set suitable file ownership and permissions or use an appropriate secret-injection method.
Create the systemd unit
Create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service with a unit suited to your Linux host. Replace the user, paths, FFmpeg arguments, ingest URL, and key with your actual values. The example’s RestartSec=5s is merely a sample delay, not a universal recovery guarantee.
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube Live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube-stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -i /srv/youtube-stream/input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Keep FFmpeg in the foreground: systemd needs to supervise the process it starts as the service’s main process. The sample uses an illustrative RTMP destination. Substitute the current ingest URL and protected key shown for your YouTube live setup; if using RTMPS, substitute the RTMPS URL and verify protocol support in your FFmpeg build.

Test recovery without mistaking a stop for a failure
Do not use systemctl stop to test Restart=on-failure: systemd suppresses automatic restart when its own stop operation terminates the service. Instead, arrange a controlled failure during a non-public test stream and observe whether systemd starts a new process. Confirm both the process behavior in systemd and successful ingest in Live Control Room.
Diagnose a stream that does not recover
- The service exits immediately: inspect
systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.servicefor the exit status and FFmpeg error. Check the executable and input paths, permissions, arguments, and destination values. - Restarts stop after repeated failures: systemd start-rate limiting may have taken effect. Find and correct the recurring cause before clearing failure state or changing limits; restart requests are subject to rate limiting.
- FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no healthy ingest: verify the current server URL and stream key in Live Control Room and ensure they belong to the intended live setup. Check the encoder’s own output rather than treating process liveness as proof of successful delivery.
- RTMPS does not connect: confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and use the corresponding URL supplied by YouTube for that stream.
- The process remains alive through an output failure: a service restart policy generally acts when the service process exits or is otherwise judged failed; it is not a general output-connection repair mechanism. Do not assume input reconnect options repair output, or that a restart resumes at precisely the interrupted point.
Choose the right recovery layer
Systemd and FFmpeg operate at different layers. Systemd can restart a failed process after it exits; FFmpeg-level recovery options, when appropriate, act inside the encoder and depend on the FFmpeg version and which connection failed. Before relying on version-specific retry flags or tuning, consult the documentation for the installed FFmpeg and systemd versions. This guide does not prescribe bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or reconnect flags; choose those from your stream requirements and current YouTube guidance rather than treating this service template as an encoding profile.
