There is no evidence-based universal winner. Choose Adobe Premiere if you want dialogue repair inside a video editor, DaVinci Resolve if you want cleanup tools in its Fairlight audio workspace, Audacity for steady background noise in a separate audio-editing step, or CapCut for a straightforward in-editor noise-reduction control. The best fit depends on the noise you need to address and how much control you want—not a published comparison of sound quality.
Which software fits your recording?
| Software | Documented use | Workflow | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Premiere | Dialogue repair and speech enhancement in a video-editing workflow | Use Essential Sound Repair controls or Enhance Speech; adjust the effect and listen back. | Results depend on the source and settings. No comparative sound-quality test establishes it as better than the alternatives. |
| DaVinci Resolve Fairlight | Video and audio work in an integrated editing environment, with cleanup effects and voice-over recording | Apply Fairlight effects to clips or tracks; its noise-reduction plugin can analyze a selection or learn from selected noise. | The available documentation establishes features, not beginner suitability or a quality ranking. |
| Audacity | Reducing steady, consistent background noise in a separate audio-cleanup step | Capture a noise-only profile, then apply Noise Reduction to the wanted audio. | It is not intended to remove isolated events such as a door slam. A bad profile or aggressive settings can damage wanted sound. |
| CapCut | A direct in-editor noise-reduction workflow | Select the audio track and enable Reduce noise. | CapCut’s guide describes the control but does not provide independent comparative results. |
These are workflow distinctions, not benchmark scores. No comparable published performance statistics establish how much noise any option removes or which sounds most natural.
How to choose by noise and workflow
Dialogue with several problems
Premiere’s Essential Sound Repair controls address noise, rumble, electrical hum, sibilance, and reverb. Adobe advises adjusting effects and listening after applying them; the useful amount depends on the noise and how much quality loss is acceptable. For a separate speech-enhancement workflow, Enhance Speech analyzes a dialogue clip and provides a Mix Amount control to blend the enhanced audio with the original.
Noise cleanup in Resolve
Resolve’s Fairlight page includes noise reduction, de-hum, and de-esser effects. The noise-reduction plugin can analyze a selection or learn from selected noise. This keeps audio cleanup within Resolve’s video-and-audio workflow, though the documented features do not establish that it is easier for beginners or produces better results.

Steady hiss or hum in an audio track
Audacity’s Noise Reduction is designed for steady background noise. It needs a sample containing noise alone so the software can build a profile. It is a poor match for a one-off sound such as a door slam, and a profile containing wanted audio may cause that audio to be treated as noise.
A quick in-editor control
CapCut documents a Reduce noise control for an audio track. Its guide also recommends headphones to check dialogue detail. That is useful monitoring advice, not independent evidence that CapCut outperforms other tools.

A careful noise-reduction workflow
- Keep the original. Duplicate or preserve the unprocessed recording before applying cleanup. This gives you a reference and a way back if the result sounds worse.
- Identify the problem. Distinguish continuous noise, such as steady hiss or hum, from isolated events and room reverb. The documented workflows differ: Audacity’s profile process targets steady noise, while Premiere’s Repair controls include options for rumble, hum, sibilance, and reverb.
- For Audacity, select noise only. Choose a stretch that contains background noise but no wanted voice or other desired sound, and use it to create the noise profile. Then select the audio to clean and apply Noise Reduction.
- For Premiere, use the relevant repair or speech workflow. Try the Repair controls for the dialogue issue, or use Enhance Speech and adjust Mix Amount to balance enhanced and original audio.
- In Resolve, apply the relevant Fairlight effect. Use noise reduction, de-hum, or de-esser as appropriate; for noise reduction, the plugin can analyze a selection or learn from selected noise.
- In CapCut, select the audio track and enable Reduce noise. Check the dialogue on headphones, as CapCut’s guide recommends.
- Listen before accepting the result. Reduce noise gradually and compare against the original. Back off if the wanted voice is damaged or becomes metallic or watery; a less processed but natural-sounding recording can be preferable to a quieter, distorted one.
What noise reduction cannot fix reliably
- One-off sounds: Audacity’s profile-based Noise Reduction is aimed at steady noise, not isolated events such as a door slam.
- Wanted sound mistaken for noise: In Audacity, including voice or other desired content in the noise-only profile can lead the effect to remove it.
- Over-processing: Aggressive reduction can damage the wanted signal or create metallic or watery artifacts. Monitor the result and use restraint.
- Poor monitoring: Headphones can help reveal dialogue detail during editing, but they are an accessory—not noise-reduction software or a cure for poor recording conditions.
