To clip an existing video into a YouTube Short, use YouTube Studio on a computer for transcript or timeline-based selection, or use Remix > Edit into a Short in the YouTube mobile app for an eligible public video you uploaded. If the footage belongs to someone else, use YouTube’s available remix tools rather than downloading and re-uploading it.

Clip your own video in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content > Videos.
- Select the long-form video you want to use.
- In the left menu, open Clips and Shorts.
- Select Create clip or Short, then choose Short.
- Choose the excerpt. You can select transcript text and confirm it, or enter start and end points in the timeline editor. If an AI-powered suggestion is available, select it and adjust its boundaries as needed.
- Review the segment and create a draft. Finish the Short’s upload details before publishing.
AI-powered suggestions and outlines are not available to every creator. YouTube lists availability in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and in English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. If you do not see the option, use transcript or timeline selection instead. YouTube Help
Make a Short from your own video on mobile
- In the YouTube mobile app, open the watch page for your video.
- Tap Remix > Edit into a Short.
- Select up to 60 seconds of the source video, then continue to the Shorts tools.
- Add any finishing touches, such as text or filters, and upload the Short.
This route is limited to long-form public videos that you uploaded. It is unavailable for private or unlisted videos and for videos with third-party copyright claims. YouTube also says Audio Library music and other sounds cannot be added to Shorts made from your own videos through Edit into a Short. A Short created this way links back to the original video. If “Edit into a Short” is missing
- Check that the source is your own long-form video and its visibility is public.
- Check whether the video has a third-party copyright claim.
- In YouTube Studio, check whether Shorts sampling is allowed for that video.
If the video does not meet these conditions, use YouTube Studio’s Clips and Shorts workflow where available, or edit a source file and upload a Short that meets YouTube’s requirements.

Remix a video that belongs to someone else
On an eligible video or Short in the YouTube mobile app, open Remix and choose the available option: Cut, Green Screen, Collab, or Use this sound. The exact controls vary by source and app interface. Remix access can depend on privacy settings, copyright claims, the creator’s settings, and music licenses; a creator may also restrict remixing later or delete the source. YouTube Help
Do not treat downloading another creator’s video and re-uploading an excerpt as equivalent to using YouTube’s remix tools. YouTube warns that copyright-protected material used in a Short created outside its tools may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a valid copyright takedown request. Giving credit or using a brief excerpt does not by itself establish that reuse is lawful. Get permission or use material you have the rights to use.

Check the clip and upload requirements
For a Short uploaded from a computer, YouTube’s cited guidance allows a video up to three minutes long and requires a square or vertical aspect ratio. That is the upload limit; mobile Edit into a Short separately limits the selected source segment to 60 seconds. Check current guidance if the app or upload flow presents different options. YouTube Help
- Choose a complete moment: the viewer should understand what is happening without needing a missing setup.
- Preview the first second so the clip does not begin mid-word or cut off essential context.
- Check the ending for an abrupt cutoff, and make sure the subject remains visible in a square or vertical crop.
- Review spoken words, captions, and any music or footage for rights and accuracy before publishing.
These are editing checks, not additional YouTube upload rules.

Troubleshoot common clipping problems
The source video is not listed in Studio
Return to Content > Videos and make sure you selected the intended long-form upload. If the Clips and Shorts route is not available, try the video’s watch page in the mobile app and check whether Remix > Edit into a Short is offered.
The transcript or AI suggestion is unavailable
Use the timeline editor to set the start and end timestamps. AI suggestions are restricted by country and language, so their absence does not prevent manual selection in the Studio workflow.

You cannot select the full moment on mobile
Edit into a Short allows up to 60 seconds from the source. Choose the essential portion or use another editing workflow and upload a square or vertical Short no longer than three minutes under YouTube’s cited computer-upload guidance.
A remix option is missing
The source may not be eligible because of its privacy settings, copyright claims, creator restrictions, or music licensing. Try another available Remix option only if it fits the source and its permissions; do not work around restrictions by downloading and re-uploading the material.
