To live stream a cooking show on YouTube, make sure your channel is eligible, choose mobile, webcam, or encoder streaming, and rehearse with a test before your first public episode. For a simple overhead shot, a phone may be enough; for multiple views or external audio gear, use an encoder. Plan the camera framing around the food and hands, check music rights, and monitor the stream while you cook.
Check whether your channel can go live
YouTube’s current Help guidance says livestreamers must be at least 16, have a verified channel, and have no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The official page does not display a stable publication date; these rules and interface details can change, so confirm them in YouTube’s live-streaming overview before show day.
Mobile streaming has separate eligibility requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no recent live-streaming restrictions, and live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s mobile instructions list Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ devices; check the current requirements and setup steps at Create a live stream on mobile.
Choose the right way to stream
| Method | Good fit for a cooking show | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | A simple first show or a setup that needs to move around. A securely positioned phone can show the cook or work surface. | Mobile has the extra eligibility requirements above. Check framing and sound on the phone before inviting viewers. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-based show when one camera view is enough. | Confirm the camera captures both the host and the cooking area you want viewers to follow. |
| Encoder | A production using external audio or video hardware, overlays, or multiple camera views—for example, one shot of the cook and another of food preparation. | It offers more production control but requires more setup and active monitoring. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the options at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. |
You do not need expensive equipment to begin: YouTube’s livestreaming tips recommend choosing a method that suits your needs and trying a test stream. A stable phone mount can help with an overhead view, and a USB microphone is an optional choice for a computer or encoder production. Neither is a YouTube requirement or a specific product recommendation.

Set up and rehearse your first episode
- Confirm eligibility. Verify the channel and check for restrictions within the previous 90 days. If you plan to stream from a phone, also confirm its separate subscriber, device, and enablement requirements; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Choose the viewing format and camera method. Decide whether the show will be horizontal, vertical, or both, then choose mobile, webcam, or encoder according to the views and audio control you need.
- Check the cooking frame. Make sure viewers can see the host, work surface, ingredients, and important hand movements. Place ingredients and tools within reach without blocking the camera. If using both horizontal and vertical formats, inspect both previews: YouTube says the vertical version may be center-cropped unless edited, and the cooking surface may not fit both layouts. You cannot add a vertical stream after the stream has started.
- Run a test livestream. Rehearse with a public or unlisted test before the real episode. For an encoder show, prepare well ahead of time, inspect the Live Control Room preview, check the event page on desktop and mobile, and monitor picture and sound. YouTube gives timing guidance for encoder preparations; it is not a universal schedule for every cooking show.
- Check the sound and any music. Listen for clear speech and unwanted kitchen noise. Do not assume music playing in the room is cleared for the broadcast: YouTube’s terms require creators to hold necessary rights, including music licensing rights.
- End the stream and review the archive. YouTube’s mobile instructions describe a recap and archive after a mobile broadcast; you can edit archive visibility or delete the archive. Review the saved episode before treating it as a finished video.
Follow YouTube’s rules for live content
Cooking demonstrations still need to comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and terms. The livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to hold the rights needed for the broadcast, explicitly including music rights. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions before using music, clips, or other material you did not create or license.
