Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a stable 1080p live stream, choose settings for the platform receiving your stream—not just the “Full HD” label. On YouTube, its current encoder guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 or 10 Mbps for 1080p30 AV1/HEVC; at 1080p60, it recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/HEVC. Those are ingest recommendations, not guarantees: your upload connection must sustain the bitrate, and your encoder must keep up with the resolution and frame rate.
What Full HD means for a live stream
Full HD usually means 1920Ă—1080 pixels. It describes the image dimensions, not the frame rate, codec, bitrate, or connection required. A 1080p30 stream sends 30 frames per second; 1080p60 sends 60. The latter can look smoother for fast movement, but it also demands more encoding capacity and bandwidth.
Choose a frame rate according to the material and what your computer and connection can reliably deliver. A mostly static documentary, talk, or presentation may work well at 30 fps. Fast movement can benefit from 60 fps, provided the platform, encoder, hardware, and upload connection all support it.
YouTube Live settings for 1080p
YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance distinguishes codec and frame rate. Use the recommendation that matches your chosen combination, then test under realistic conditions. The values below are YouTube’s recommended video ingest bitrates; they are not a measure of the upload speed you should expect from your internet plan. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, as platform guidance can change.

| Output | AV1 or HEVC recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate | YouTube-listed minimums |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps | AV1/HEVC: 4 Mbps; H.264: 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps | AV1/HEVC: 4 Mbps; H.264: 6 Mbps |
The listed minimums are separate from the recommendations. They should not be treated as the best target for every stream or as proof that a connection will be stable at that rate.
Other YouTube encoder settings
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to Google’s servers.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as specified in YouTube’s guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says the interval must not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio.
- Resolution and frame-rate selection: Live Control Room’s automatic detection is recommended by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key.
Use a codec supported by both your encoder and YouTube. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. H.264 is a broadly documented baseline; newer codecs can be more efficient, but compatibility depends on the encoder and destination platform. NVIDIA’s OBS guide also notes that platform support differs.

How to choose a bitrate and upload speed
Start with the destination platform
First find the destination’s current encoder guidance and select the bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to use. YouTube’s figures above are not transferable by default to Twitch or another service. Twitch’s official Broadcasting Guidelines discuss balancing bitrate, resolution, frame rate, internet speed, and hardware, but the available page text does not establish a specific current Twitch bitrate for 1080p. Check Twitch’s live guidance rather than assuming YouTube values apply.
Leave room for network variation
Measure upload capacity, not download speed, and assess it while your network is being used as it will be during the broadcast. A single speed-test result does not establish that the connection can sustain a live stream without variation. Twitch’s streaming FAQ gives a rule of thumb of upload speed equal to the configured bitrate plus 30%. NVIDIA’s 2025 guide instead suggests using around 75% of measured upload speed for the stream bitrate. These are separate rules of thumb from their respective sources, not a single platform-mandated formula.

If your connection cannot reliably sustain the platform’s preferred setting, reduce the bitrate to a stable level or choose a lower output configuration. A high target that repeatedly drops frames is usually less useful than a lower, consistent stream.
OBS settings and keeping the encoder within capacity
In OBS, configure the video output to 1920×1080 only if the computer and connection can handle it. Set the frame rate to 30 or 60 according to the content and available resources. In the streaming output settings, select the destination-supported encoder and bitrate, use CBR, and apply the destination’s keyframe and audio requirements. Labels and available encoder options can vary with OBS version, operating system, and hardware.

OBS explains that x264 presets trade CPU use against compression quality. Its 2017 article gives 5,000–8,000 Kbps as an x264 “veryfast” example for 1920×1080 at 30 fps, assuming low-to-medium motion. It explicitly cautions that bitrate needs vary with resolution and frame rate; this historical example is not a replacement for current platform recommendations. High-motion 1080p60 can need more than the example range, while low-motion scenes may need less. See OBS Project’s x264 guidance.
If OBS reports “Encoding overloaded!” or the output skips or distorts, the encoder may be unable to keep up with the selected load. OBS’s first suggested adjustments are to lower output resolution and frame rate, then reduce the encoder preset’s demand if needed. Changing the bitrate alone does not solve an overloaded CPU or encoder.

A practical pre-stream test
- Confirm the destination and planned format. Check the platform’s current encoder requirements, then choose 1080p30 or 1080p60 and a supported codec.
- Set the encoder. Apply the matching bitrate recommendation, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio settings. For YouTube, use the values and limits listed above.
- Check the connection under realistic use. Test upload stability with other expected network activity in place, and leave headroom rather than relying on the headline speed alone.
- Run a safe test broadcast. Use a private or unlisted stream where appropriate, with audio and movement similar to the real program.
- Watch the platform’s stream health and encoder indicators. Look for dropped frames, buffering, disconnections, or OBS’s encoding-overload warning. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- Adjust the cause, then test again. For a network problem, reduce bitrate or choose a less demanding format. For encoding overload, lower resolution, frame rate, or preset load.
Troubleshooting common 1080p streaming problems
- Stream buffers or disconnects: The upload may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Test upload capacity during representative network use and reduce the bitrate or output demands until the stream is stable.
- Dropped frames despite a fast download result: Download speed does not show whether upload capacity is sufficient. Measure upload performance and stability instead.
- OBS shows “Encoding overloaded!”: The selected resolution, frame rate, or encoder preset may exceed the machine’s capacity. Lower output resolution or FPS first; if needed, use a less demanding preset.
- Picture looks poor at the chosen settings: Check that the encoder uses the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and platform-matched bitrate. A 1080p label alone does not specify these settings.
- Settings differ from the platform table: Verify the selected codec and frame rate before changing bitrate. YouTube’s recommendation differs between H.264 and AV1/HEVC and between 30 and 60 fps.
- Test looks better than the real broadcast: Repeat the test with comparable motion, audio, and network activity. YouTube recommends testing with conditions representative of the actual stream.
