MKV vs. MP4 for Pre-Recorded Live Streaming: Which Should You Use?

OBS can play both MKV and MP4 as Media Sources. Record to MKV when interruption recovery matters, then remux to MP4 if your workflow needs it.

For pre-recorded live streaming in OBS, either MKV or MP4 can work as a playback file. If you are recording a show in OBS and want protection against an interrupted recording, use MKV as the recording format, then remux it to MP4 if your editor or handoff requires MP4. The container is only part of compatibility: check the embedded codecs and test the exact file in your full streaming setup.

MKV vs. MP4: the practical difference

Format If recording is interrupted Compatibility and workflow Best fit
MKV OBS says an unfinished MKV recording remains playable and recoverable. Some editing workflows may support it less well; OBS can remux recordings to MP4. A recording master when resilience matters.
Regular MP4 OBS warns that an interruption before finalization may leave the file unrecoverable. Commonly compatible with internet-video and editing workflows, but the codecs and destination still matter. A workflow that specifically needs MP4, when recording interruption risk is acceptable.
Fragmented MP4/MOV Written in self-contained chunks, avoiding the same dependence on a finalization step. OBS describes compatibility as better than MKV, though some editing suites may need remuxing, especially with lossless or uncompressed audio. A compromise if the installed software and downstream workflow support it.
OBS Hybrid MP4/MOV OBS describes recovery if writing aborts, with finalization producing a regular-looking file. Support depends on OBS version and codec: Hybrid MP4 supports AV1; Hybrid MOV supports ProRes. A version- and codec-compatible alternative to consider.

OBS calls MKV its default container and recommends it for most use cases because it can be remuxed into a more compatible format. That is a recording recommendation, not a rule that every streaming playlist must use MKV. See the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

Can OBS play an MKV file as a Media Source?

Yes. OBS documents both .mkv and .mp4 among its supported video extensions for Media Source. Media Source includes controls to loop playback and restart playback when the source becomes visible. Set those behaviors deliberately for a prerecorded program, and rehearse the complete scene, including audio. The OBS Media Sources guide documents the source options.

Support for a container does not guarantee every file will play correctly. The audio and video codecs inside the file, your OBS version, and the player or destination’s requirements all matter. A file extension alone cannot establish compatibility.

How to record in MKV and deliver an MP4

  1. Choose MKV for the recording. In OBS, open Settings > Output and select the recording format in the recording section. The exact controls can vary with output mode and OBS version; consult the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide.
  2. Finish and check the recording. Confirm OBS has stopped recording, then play the MKV and check both picture and sound before using it downstream.
  3. Remux if MP4 is required. In OBS, open File > Remux Recordings, select the MKV and start remuxing. OBS also provides an option to automatically remux after recording stops. Remuxing changes the container; it does not necessarily require encoding the audio or video again.
  4. Verify the MP4 in its destination. Open the remuxed file in the editor or playback system that will actually use it. Confirm the codecs and audio behave as expected; a successful remux does not guarantee that every destination supports the file.

When to choose each format

Choose MKV when recording resilience matters

If OBS or the computer may stop unexpectedly, MKV is the safer default among ordinary MKV and regular MP4 recordings: OBS says an unfinished MKV remains playable and recoverable, while regular MP4 can be unrecoverable if recording is interrupted before finalization.

Choose MP4 when the workflow requires it

If an editor, playback system, or handoff specifically needs MP4, record safely to MKV and use OBS’s remux function afterward. If you choose regular MP4 for direct delivery, weigh its compatibility advantage against the interruption risk.

Consider a hybrid format only after checking versions and codecs

OBS introduced Hybrid MP4 in version 30.2 and Hybrid MOV in version 32.0. These formats write fragmented media and soft-remux on completion. Hybrid MP4 supports AV1, while Hybrid MOV supports ProRes. Confirm that your installed OBS version, selected codec, editor, and destination support the particular hybrid format before relying on it. Details are in the OBS Hybrid MP4 & Hybrid MOV guide.

Codec checks matter as much as the container

MKV and MP4 are containers: they hold encoded video and audio. OBS lists codec support by container in its formats guide; that guide describes H.264 as broadly playable and AAC as widely used. Those broad descriptions are not a guarantee for a particular editor or streaming destination. Check the destination’s stated requirements and test the exact media file in the setup you intend to use.

Rehearse the prerecorded stream before going live

  • Load the actual MKV or MP4 file into the intended OBS Media Source.
  • Set looping and restart-on-show behavior to match whether the show should repeat and how it should behave when the scene returns.
  • Play through a representative section and check video, audio, synchronization, and transitions.
  • Run a full rehearsal through the intended streaming setup and destination rather than assuming that container support alone settles ingest compatibility.
  • For a repeated program, review the content’s rights and the destination platform’s rules before streaming; file format does not establish permission to broadcast.
