How to Run a Live Pop-Up Stream from a Browser with AWS Elemental MediaLive

A browser MediaStream is not a MediaLive RTMP input. Here’s how to plan the capture, sender or gateway, MediaLive channel, and viewer-delivery path.

You cannot send a browser capture stream straight to an AWS Elemental MediaLive RTMP input just because the browser has a camera or screen stream. The browser capture API produces a MediaStream; MediaLive expects a supported input protocol. Put a sender or gateway between them if your browser-side implementation cannot emit a protocol and stream format accepted by the MediaLive input you configure. The complete path is browser capture → sender or gateway → MediaLive input and channel → output destination → viewer player.

What “browser stream to MediaLive” means

A pop-up stream can start with a camera and microphone, a browser tab, a window, or an entire display. The browser asks for permission and exposes selected audio and video tracks as a MediaStream. That is the capture stage, not a promise that the browser will send RTMP, or that MediaLive can accept the browser’s connection directly.

Keep four parts distinct as you design the path:

  • Capture: the browser obtains the permitted camera, microphone, or display tracks.
  • Send or relay: an application, encoder, or gateway transmits those tracks using a protocol MediaLive accepts.
  • Encode: MediaLive processes the configured input and produces the outputs set up for the channel.
  • Deliver: a player-facing destination and any required packaging or distribution make the stream available to viewers.

The MediaLive input and upstream source must be prepared before channel creation, according to AWS’s “Setup: Creating inputs” guidance. Its input protocol table lists supported input types and upstream protocols; it does not document a browser MediaStream or WebRTC session as a direct input. Treat any browser-to-MediaLive bridge as an architectural requirement to verify for your chosen sender, not as a built-in feature or a prescribed AWS product.

Choose what the browser captures

Camera and microphone

Use navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia() when a participant should appear on camera or speak. The browser prompts the user for permission and returns a MediaStream in supporting browsers when the page is running in a secure context. Handle denial, missing devices, and cases where the selected device has no usable track. MDN’s “MediaDevices: getUserMedia() method” documents the API and its permission behavior.

Screen, window, or tab

Use navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia() to ask the user to choose a display surface. The user’s selection determines what is shared; do not assume the page can silently select a screen or that every browser offers identical surface choices. Screen-capture support and the availability or behavior of captured audio vary by browser. Check the target browsers and devices and make the audio selection explicit in your interface. MDN’s “MediaDevices: getDisplayMedia() method” describes this capture path and its browser caveats.

Both APIs give your application capture tracks; neither specifies the network transport that carries them to MediaLive. Also account for capture ending when the user stops sharing or a track becomes unavailable, and stop tracks and release devices when the pop-up ends.

Choose a sender that matches a MediaLive input

Before creating a channel, identify the upstream sender and the exact protocol it will use. AWS lists input choices including RTMP Push, RTMP Pull, SRT Caller/Listener, RTP, and HLS, alongside other types for their stated scenarios. RTMP Push may fit when the upstream sender can emit the expected RTMP stream, but confirm the endpoint details, access restrictions, and current availability for your account, Region, and channel in the AWS console and MediaLive User Guide.

A browser library that sends WebRTC is not thereby an RTMP sender. If your browser-side design uses WebRTC, you may need a gateway, relay, or encoder that receives that transport and emits a MediaLive-supported input. Confirm that the specific implementation handles the codecs, audio/video tracks, authentication, and transport expected on both sides. No particular bridge vendor or ready-made conversion recipe is established here.

One important protocol boundary: AWS states that “MediaLive doesn’t support inputs using the RTMPS protocol.” This is specifically a statement about MediaLive inputs; do not infer from it that every AWS service or the separate AWS Elemental Live product has the same support matrix. Confirm the protocol required by the actual MediaLive input rather than assuming that an RTMPS URL is interchangeable with RTMP.

MediaRecorder is another browser API, but its purpose is to record a MediaStream. A recorded file or blob is not, on that basis alone, a live transport into MediaLive. MDN documents MediaRecorder as a recording interface; AWS’s input documentation describes MediaLive’s protocol-based inputs. Do not treat MediaRecorder output as a direct live bridge without a separate sender design.

Configure and connect the MediaLive workflow

  1. Prepare the upstream sender. Decide which capture tracks it receives and which supported protocol it emits. Obtain the endpoint and any access information from the MediaLive input configuration you intend to use; do not hard-code assumptions about endpoint format or credentials.
  2. Create the MediaLive input. Select an input type that matches the sender’s actual protocol and arrange the upstream connection. AWS’s setup guidance puts input creation and upstream preparation before channel creation.
  3. Create the channel and attach the input. Configure the channel’s encoding and output destinations for the stream you need. Input attachment, encoding settings, and destination configuration are separate decisions; the browser capture API does not set them for you.
  4. Provide a viewer-facing delivery path. Decide how viewers will receive and play the output. In AWS’s “Live Streaming on AWS” reference architecture, MediaLive encodes adaptive-bitrate HLS outputs and AWS Elemental MediaPackage packages output for HLS, DASH, and CMAF. That is one architecture, not a mandatory topology for every pop-up. An encoder and a viewer-facing player or CDN endpoint are different parts of the system.
  5. Start, observe, and stop the stream deliberately. Verify the input and channel state, confirm output availability at the chosen destination, and check playback in the player your viewers will use. When the event ends, stop the channel and sender as appropriate, close the capture, and release browser tracks.

The exact channel settings depend on the sender, source format, target output, and delivery design. The sources cited here do not establish a single set of bitrate, resolution, keyframe, codec, or latency values for every browser-to-MediaLive path. Use the requirements of your selected input and output, and validate the resulting configuration for the actual event rather than copying a generic preset.

Validate the whole path before the event

  • Browser permissions: test camera, microphone, and display prompts in every supported browser; check the experience when permission is declined or a device is unavailable.
  • Track selection: confirm the sender receives the intended video and audio tracks, including the chosen screen-audio behavior where available.
  • Transport handoff: verify that the sender or gateway is using the protocol configured on the MediaLive input and can reach its endpoint under the applicable access restrictions.
  • MediaLive state: check that the input receives the upstream stream and that the channel starts and produces the configured output.
  • Viewer playback: test the actual player and delivery endpoint, not only the encoder’s status, and check both picture and sound.
  • Shutdown: verify that stopping the pop-up also stops the sender, releases browser capture tracks, and leaves the channel in the intended state.

These are implementation checks, not claims of end-to-end testing. Browser compatibility, account and Region configuration, the chosen bridge, and the downstream delivery path can all affect the result. The cited documentation does not establish a universal latency, reliability, or cost figure for this architecture.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely issue Next check
The browser shows video, but MediaLive receives nothing. Capture succeeded, but the sender is not emitting the protocol configured for the input, or the bridge is not connected. Check the sender’s actual transport, the MediaLive input type and endpoint, and the gateway handoff. A browser MediaStream by itself is not an RTMP connection.
An RTMPS connection is rejected. MediaLive does not support RTMPS inputs. Confirm the configured MediaLive input protocol and use a supported input path; do not assume an RTMPS URL will work as RTMP.
Camera or microphone access fails. Permission was declined, a device is unavailable, or the page is not in a secure context. Check browser permission state, device availability, and secure-context requirements; provide a clear retry path.
Screen video arrives without expected audio. Display audio availability or selection differs across browsers, or the sender did not include the audio track. Test the target browser’s capture prompt and audio options, then inspect the tracks passed to the sender.
MediaLive is running, but viewers cannot watch. The encoder/channel state does not prove the output is available through the configured player-facing delivery path. Check output availability, packaging or distribution components if used, and playback at the viewer endpoint.
A screen share or camera feed ends unexpectedly. The user stopped sharing, a capture track ended, or the device became unavailable. Listen for track-ending events, tell the user what stopped, and define whether to reconnect, stop the sender, or end the channel.
