The best Chrome extension for a live streamer depends on the job: BetterTTV or FrankerFaceZ for Twitch chat customization and emotes, Enhancer for Twitch and Kick chat and stream utilities, Live Chat Overlay for displaying YouTube chat in OBS, and Previews for cross-platform viewing conveniences. These tools are not interchangeable, and their feature descriptions come from their store listings or developer—not from a comparative hands-on test.

These are browser extensions with distinct purposes, not a single set of interchangeable broadcasting, moderation, or clipping services. The descriptions below reflect what the relevant listings or developer say they offer; they do not establish comparative performance.
Extensions for chat emotes and customization
BetterTTV: Twitch and YouTube chat enhancements
BetterTTV’s Chrome Web Store listing describes global and per-channel custom emotes, an improved emote menu, keyword tools, split chat lines, and ways to view deleted messages and links. It also lists anonymous chat, automatic channel-points, drop, and moment claims, and controls for hiding interface clutter (c001).
Check permissions and platform compatibility before enabling it on YouTube. The listing says YouTube support requires an additional permission and that not every setting works on YouTube. The listing identified for this article is version 7.7.25, updated July 16, 2026; store details can change.

FrankerFaceZ’s Chrome Web Store listing describes a Twitch enhancement suite with custom channel emotes, layout and chat customization, and advanced chat moderation tools (c002). Its listing identified version 4.82.0.31 and an update date of September 5, 2026. Choose it when Twitch customization and moderation controls are the priority; the listing does not establish support for other platforms.

Enhancer’s Chrome Web Store listing describes a free, open-source extension for Twitch and Kick. It lists chat attachments and enhanced mentions on both platforms, alongside stream latency and VOD timing features. Twitch-specific functions listed include chatter information, streamer pins, channel shortcuts, and clip-download controls (c003).

The listing identifies version 5.3.0, updated September 24, 2026. It also says the developer discloses that it will not collect or use data. That is the developer’s disclosure, not an independent privacy audit.

Live Chat Overlay: an OBS browser source
Live Chat Overlay is intended for a different job from emote extensions: its Chrome Web Store listing describes a YouTube live-chat overlay that can be added as a browser source in OBS or other software. It also says the overlay can be full-screened and keyed through compatible video systems. Listed controls include display customization, highlighted words, and automatic message hiding (c005).

Use it when chat needs to appear in the production output, rather than only in your browser’s chat interface. Confirm the current listing and the setup steps for your broadcasting software before relying on it; the available description does not specify every software’s configuration or compatibility.

The developer describes Previews as a free browser extension for Twitch, YouTube, and Kick. Its listed bundle includes hover previews, favorites, multi-stream and multi-chat, picture-in-picture, clip downloading, screenshots, and stream recording (c006).

Those are developer-described features, not findings from a comparative test. Before using recording or downloading functions, consider the platform’s rules, the rights attached to the content, and your local requirements. A feature’s presence in an extension does not itself establish that a particular use is permitted.

Some streamer tasks call for a service rather than a Chrome extension. YouTube Help lists Nightbot for live-chat automation and moderation; StreamElements as an all-in-one toolkit with overlays, a chatbot, tipping, and post-stream reports; Streamlabs for on-stream notifications and donations; and YuzzitPro for clipping livestream highlights (c004). These descriptions concern broader services, not necessarily browser extensions.

YouTube Help states: “None of the products listed below are made by or endorsed by Google LLC.” The page tells users to evaluate those products for themselves (c004). Treat a listing as a starting point for checking suitability, not as an endorsement.
How to choose and install carefully
- Start with the task. For Twitch emotes and chat customization, compare BetterTTV and FrankerFaceZ. For Twitch/Kick chat and stream utilities, consider Enhancer. For a YouTube chat overlay in a broadcast scene, look at Live Chat Overlay. For cross-platform viewing conveniences, review Previews.
- Verify platform support in the current listing. In particular, BetterTTV says YouTube requires an additional permission and that some settings do not work there (c001). Do not assume a feature works the same way across services.
- Review permissions before installing. Check what access the extension requests and whether that access makes sense for the features you intend to use. A developer privacy disclosure, such as Enhancer’s, is not the same as an independent audit (c003).
- Confirm the listing is current. Store descriptions, versions, and capabilities can change. The version and update dates cited above are listing snapshots: BetterTTV was listed as updated July 16, 2026; FrankerFaceZ September 5, 2026; and Enhancer September 24, 2026 (c001–c003).
- Separate interface enhancements from production tools. An extension that changes chat or viewing does not necessarily provide a full moderation service, broadcast overlay, or clipping workflow. Match the tool to the part of your setup it actually serves.
