How do I make money from my videos? There is no single route or guaranteed income. Creators can earn through platform revenue, viewer support, product sales and affiliate recommendations, or brand partnerships. For a documentary channel, the right mix depends on what viewers value, what you can offer them, and which features are available to your account and country.
Four ways video creators can earn

These models are not interchangeable, and official platform information does not establish comparable average earnings. Consider how each fits your audience, workload and exposure to policy or platform changes rather than relying on a universal income forecast.
Platform revenue: ads and subscriptions
On YouTube, the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) provides access to monetization features and revenue sharing. YouTube’s February 3, 2025 explainer stated a 55% share for long-form video ad revenue and 45% for Shorts ad revenue. Those are figures in that explainer, not a promise of a creator’s take-home income or a universal rate for all platforms. YouTube’s Partner Program overview explains the program.
Check current YPP eligibility
Eligibility depends on location, policy compliance and account setup, and feature requirements can differ. YouTube’s live YPP eligibility page lists requirements including compliance with monetization policies, availability in a supported location, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features and an AdSense for YouTube account. Check that page and the Earn area in YouTube Studio before planning around a feature; thresholds and availability may change.

Know what is announced for 2027
YouTube announced on August 10, 2026 that new applicants seeking ads and Premium revenue sharing will, from February 1, 2027, need either 8,000 qualified watch hours in the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. From that date, Shorts ads and subscription revenue sharing will require 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. These are announced future requirements, not requirements to apply before that effective date. YouTube says channels below the Shorts threshold will remain in YPP and keep earning on long-form content; Shorts revenue sharing resumes if they cross the threshold again. The announcement says fan-funding and shopping entry thresholds are unchanged. See YouTube’s August 10, 2026 announcement and check current official terms as the effective date approaches.

Fan support: memberships and live features
YouTube’s fan-funding options include channel memberships with recurring monthly payments for member perks, Super Chat and Super Stickers in live streams and Premieres, and Super Thanks on eligible videos and Shorts. The stated baseline requirements include being in YPP, being at least 18, and living in a region where the feature is available; each feature has additional criteria. Confirm eligibility in your account and region on YouTube’s fan-funding help page.
This route depends on viewers choosing to pay, not simply on reaching a particular view count. Give supporters a clear reason to join or participate, such as a defined perk or interaction, and make sure you can deliver it consistently. YouTube says fan-funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools; their terms and legal treatment depend on applicable law and the creator’s activity.
Product sales and affiliate recommendations
Selling your own product and recommending another seller’s product are different arrangements. With your own product, you control the offer and earn from sales of your goods. With an affiliate recommendation, earnings depend on a qualifying purchase and the terms of a merchant or platform program; do not assume a commission or access without checking those terms.

YouTube’s 2026 announcement said Amazon product tags were announced for the U.S., with expansion planned for India and Brazil and additional markets. It also announced a shopping affiliate rollout to 35 countries by year-end; that is a planned rollout, not confirmation that every market is already live. Check the current Earn area in YouTube Studio for your account and country. Brand partnerships and sponsorships
A brand may pay for a placement or collaboration when your documentary subject and audience fit its campaign. YouTube’s August 2026 announcement describes Creator Partnerships tools for brand discovery and deal workflow, and says the product is available in 20 countries. That is a platform-specific availability statement, not a promise of brand work or a claim about other services.

A focused media kit can help explain your channel’s subject, audience and suitable partnership formats. Approach brands whose products or work genuinely fit your viewers, and agree on deliverables before accepting a campaign. No standard rate or expected income is established here. Follow the disclosure rules and platform settings that apply to your location and campaign; requirements vary by jurisdiction.

- Match the payer to the audience relationship: platform revenue comes through monetization features, fan support requires viewers willing to pay, product income requires a relevant purchase, and sponsorships require a suitable negotiated partnership.
- Check access before building around a feature: location, account status, program enrollment and feature-specific criteria can limit availability.
- Account for the work after the upload: memberships bring ongoing perk commitments; selling products brings customer responsibilities; partnerships bring campaign deliverables.
- Build compatible streams gradually: treat platform income as one possible component, test whether an offer meets a real audience need, and avoid assuming any mix guarantees earnings.
Protect monetization by following platform rules
YouTube says monetized content must meet advertiser-friendly guidelines. Content that falls short of those guidelines, or breaches relevant age or copyright rules, may receive limited or no ad earnings. YouTube may also withhold or adjust earnings for invalid traffic, fake engagement or Content ID claims; suspension or termination can remove monetization access. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies and the applicable advertiser-friendly guidance before publishing.
