Why YouTube Creators Should Make Vertical Live Streams

Vertical YouTube live can add a path to discovery in the Shorts feed. See when it suits your content, what horizontal retains, and how to test both formats.

Vertical live gives a YouTube broadcast another way to reach mobile viewers: eligible streams can appear in the Shorts feed, including for people who do not already subscribe to the channel. It is worth testing when the subject works in a tall frame, but it is not a guarantee of more viewers or revenue. For many creators, the practical choice is to offer vertical and horizontal views together, then check whether the vertical layout suits the content.

Why make a live stream vertical?

The clearest reason is discovery. YouTube says viewers browsing Shorts on mobile can find vertical live streams and scroll through them. That creates an additional route to a live event beyond viewers who already know the channel or open a landscape stream directly. It does not mean YouTube will recommend every vertical broadcast, or that a creator can expect a particular number of new viewers.

The format also matches how many people hold and watch a phone: vertical video fills the screen without asking viewers to rotate their device. This can feel natural for a close-up conversation, a demonstration, or a quick update. YouTube has reported that, on average, over 30% of daily logged-in viewers watched live content in Q2 2025; that is a platform-wide live-viewing figure, not evidence that vertical streams outperform horizontal ones (YouTube Blog, September 16, 2025).

Should you stream vertical and horizontal at the same time?

If the content can work in both frames, dual-format streaming is a practical way to accommodate mobile discovery and viewers who prefer a landscape presentation. YouTube’s Live Control Room can deliver horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions of the same live event. The event uses one shared chat and one go-live notification with a shared URL, rather than separate conversations for each frame.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube says Live Control Room streams go live in both formats by default. The vertical version starts as a center crop, but creators can adjust zoom and position and choose center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked layouts. You can’t add vertical to a stream after the broadcast has started, so inspect the vertical preview and make layout decisions before going live. Vertical-specific metrics become available in Studio 24 hours after the stream, according to YouTube Help (Get started with live streaming).

A center crop can cut off a person at the edge of the shot, text, a product demonstration, or important gameplay controls. That is a framing risk, not a certainty: preview the output and adjust the layout when needed. If one crop cannot serve both audiences, YouTube’s guidance also describes using an RTMP(S) encoder workflow for separate vertical and horizontal feeds.

What changes between vertical and horizontal live?

YouTube’s feature comparison identifies meaningful differences. Vertical offers Shorts-feed discovery and scrolling; horizontal retains several features that may matter for a creator’s format or business model. The availability below reflects YouTube’s Help comparison, checked October 3, 2026; platform features can change, so confirm the current guidance before a broadcast.

Decision Vertical live Horizontal live
Discovery and viewing Discoverable and scrollable in the Shorts feed; 9:16 mobile-first frame. Not discoverable in the Shorts feed comparison; 16:9 landscape frame.
Clickable links Clickable chat and channel-description links are not listed for the vertical feed. Clickable chat and channel-description links are listed.

Dual-format event Shares one chat and one go-live notification with the horizontal version. Shares one chat and one go-live notification with the vertical version.

The comparison is about feature availability, not guaranteed earnings. YouTube’s April 2026 update also says viewers can send gifts on horizontal streams from a mobile device, describes personal ad-free windows associated with Super Chats, Super Stickers, or gifts, and says its system can hold back ads during peak live-chat engagement when automatic ads are enabled. Eligibility and availability may vary; see YouTube’s April 13, 2026 update for the platform’s description.

Which creators and subjects suit vertical live?

Vertical is a sensible experiment when the important action fits a narrow, close-framed view. Examples include a creator-led Q&A, a conversation with chat, a demonstration that can be kept in frame, or a brief update. YouTube specifically points to mobile live for vlogging and quick updates. Its encoder guidance names gaming, sports, concerts, and conferences as common encoder use cases, but those wide or visually busy subjects often need more deliberate framing to work vertically.

Creators with wide scenes, dense on-screen text, multiple people spread across the frame, or detailed overlays should inspect the vertical preview rather than assume a center crop will preserve the story. If a meaningful share of the audience watches on a television, keep the landscape experience legible too. YouTube’s Product Manager for Live reported that over 30% of live watch time in the U.S. came from connected TVs in 2025 (YouTube Blog, April 13, 2026); that U.S. figure is a reason to consider both screens, not a prediction about any individual channel.

How to try vertical live and evaluate it

  1. Check that you can go live. YouTube says channels must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. Streams featuring 13- to 15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult may have live chat or other features disabled. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements before scheduling.
  2. Choose a production path. Use YouTube’s mobile workflow for a phone-first update or vlog. For a desk, gaming, or event production, an encoder can support overlays and hardware such as microphones, preamps, and cameras. A tripod or microphone may be useful, but YouTube does not require a particular accessory.
  3. Prepare both frames before the event. In Live Control Room, review the horizontal and vertical previews. Adjust vertical zoom and position; choose center crop, fit to phone width, or a stacked layout as appropriate. Check faces, titles, captions, demonstrations, and any essential interface elements at phone size. Do not wait until after going live to add vertical, because YouTube says that is not possible.
  4. Run a small, comparable test. Where practical, stream similar topics at similar times in dual format. Note how the framing affected readability and participation, and compare results against your own goals rather than assuming format alone caused a change.
  5. Review the right measurements. Check vertical-specific Studio metrics after they become available 24 hours after the stream. Consider those alongside watch time, returning viewers, chat participation, and the outcome that matters for the event. This is a suggested way to evaluate your own broadcasts, not a YouTube test protocol or a promise of algorithmic distribution.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your plan is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7 rather than host a live camera event, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. • Nothing has to stay on at home while the stream runs.
  • Videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will vertical live automatically increase my views?

No. Shorts-feed discovery is an additional opportunity, not a guarantee of recommendations, audience growth, or revenue.

Can I add a vertical version after my live stream has started?

No. YouTube says vertical cannot be added after the broadcast begins, so check the layout before going live.
