Pre-roll and display ads are enabled with monetization; mid-rolls can be automatic, scheduled, or inserted manually. You must be eligible for live monetization, and YouTube does not guarantee that every ad slot will show an ad.
What you need before enabling live ads
Your channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program and accept the Watch Page Monetization Module to earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams viewed on the Watch Page or embedded in the YouTube player. Turn monetization on for a live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Start streaming from the Stream tab, or schedule a stream from Manage.
- In Live Control Room, select Edit → Monetization.
- Set Monetization to On.
- Choose Automatic (recommended), Scheduled, or Manual for mid-rolls.
When monetization is on, eligible streams can show pre-roll and display ads. Mid-rolls are configured separately. Ad availability and delivery are not guaranteed.
Choose how to place mid-roll ads

YouTube says scheduled or manual mid-rolls may have lower earnings potential than automatic mid-rolls. That is a platform-reported comparison, not a promise about your stream or its revenue. Weigh timing control and likely interruptions against potential earnings rather than assuming any mode guarantees ad delivery. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream

Delay ads around an important moment
With automatic mid-rolls, use Delay ads in Live Control Room to pause mid-rolls for 10 minutes. A five-second countdown appears before automatic ads resume. This does not suppress manually placed mid-rolls, so avoid inserting a manual break during the moment you are trying to protect.
For a temporary away screen, Take a Break offers intervals of 1, 3, or 5 minutes. Eligible viewers may see ads during the break. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream

What viewers see—and why ads may not run
YouTube decides whether an ad runs in a slot using factors intended to balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. YouTube Help puts it plainly: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Viewers who are not served an ad continue watching the stream; viewers who receive one rejoin after it ends or when they skip it. When a live stream is embedded on an external site with autoplay, YouTube says ads are turned off for that live stream. Ads may be limited or unavailable if content is age-restricted or does not meet advertiser-friendly content guidelines. Advertisers may also avoid content they consider misaligned with their brands. Turning monetization on therefore does not ensure that ads will appear or that every viewer will see one.

Review live ad revenue in Analytics
To review live-stream and live-replay ad revenue, open YouTube Analytics and select the Live filter. Use the reported results to assess what actually happened rather than treating configured ad breaks as proof that an ad served. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
YouTube reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. This was a platform-reported average comparing channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled with channels without them, across 207 countries in January 2024; it is not an individual earnings forecast. Optional control for inserting ads
YouTube’s live monetization guidance names a YouTube plugin for Elgato Stream Deck that can insert ads while streaming. This is optional; you do not need extra hardware to enable monetization or use Live Control Room’s standard ad settings. YouTube’s guidance does not establish which current models are compatible or confirm retail availability, so verify those details before buying. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
