Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallLive streaming can cost $0 extra to start if you already have a suitable phone, computer or console and internet connection, and use free tools. You may spend more for a microphone, camera, capture card, production software, recording storage or multistreaming—but none is automatically required. There is no useful universal setup total: the cost depends on what you already own and what you want your stream to do.
What do you need to start streaming?
At minimum, you need a source of video, a stable internet connection and a way to send the video online. Twitch describes that sending tool as a video encoder, which can be software or a physical device. YouTube supports streaming by webcam, mobile device or encoder; an encoder is useful for screen or gameplay sharing, external audio and video equipment, and more advanced productions. Twitch’s beginner FAQ and YouTube’s streaming guide outline those paths.
A camera and microphone are not universal technical requirements. Twitch’s FAQ says you can stream without either. For a documentary discussion, interview or narrated presentation, though, clear audio and a visible presenter may make the program more watchable. Treat those as production choices, not a mandatory shopping list.
Where the money goes
| Cost area | When it may cost extra | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | When your existing phone, computer, console, audio gear or lighting cannot meet the production need | Source compatibility and whether the purchase solves a specific problem |
| Streaming software | When you need features beyond a free encoder or studio tier | Resolution, branding, guests, destinations and recording limits |
| Hosting or distribution | When you want an intermediary for simultaneous destinations or other added capabilities | Channel limits, quality and included features |
| Internet and power | Depending on your connection, usage plan and streaming setup | Whether your connection is stable enough for the intended stream; the sources cited here do not establish a universal internet cost |

Equipment: buy only for a defined need
Start with devices you already own
Inventory your phone, webcam, computer or console, headset, microphone, lights and any capture device before shopping. A webcam or mobile stream may need little beyond the device itself. A more involved production with multiple cameras, microphones or a mixer adds hardware because the workflow calls for it—not because every streamer needs a studio.
When a capture card makes sense
A capture card is relevant when you need to bring an external video source, such as a console, into a streaming computer. Elgato describes its HD60 X as a way to connect a console to a streaming PC and lists compatibility with applications including OBS, Streamlabs, StreamYard and Restream. It is not a generic requirement for phone, webcam or computer-screen streaming.

Elgato’s US catalog showed the HD60 X at $179.99 and out of stock when checked on October 3, 2026. That is a dated US listing, not a guarantee of current price or availability. See the HD60 X product page and Elgato capture-card catalog.
Streaming software: free starts and paid features
Software on your computer can act as an encoder; a paid browser-based production studio is only one possible workflow. YouTube distinguishes software encoders from standalone hardware encoders, so first decide whether you need a simple send-to-platform setup or tools for guests, overlays, branding, recordings or multiple destinations.

Hosting and multistreaming: an optional distribution cost
“Hosting” does not mean one mandatory fee for every live stream. You can send a stream directly to a platform, or pay an intermediary when you want added distribution or production capabilities. Restream’s pricing page displayed a $0 plan with two simultaneous channels, Standard at $19/month for three channels, and Professional at $49/month for five channels with Full HD streaming. These are Restream plan examples, not standard rates for all services. Compare the destinations and quality you need with the features included on the Restream pricing page.

For a YouTube encoder connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streams and says the data is encrypted into and through Google’s servers. This is a connection-setting consideration, not a separate hosting charge. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions at YouTube’s live encoder help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to estimate your own live-streaming cost
- List your existing kit. Note your source device, camera, audio gear, lights, internet connection and any capture hardware. Do not price equipment you already have.
- Choose the stream format. A webcam or mobile broadcast differs from a console-to-PC or multi-camera production. The latter may require a capture device or additional audio/video hardware.
- Identify must-have software features. Decide whether free encoding is enough or whether you need guests, branding controls, recordings, higher resolution or multistreaming.
- Count destinations. If you will send one stream to one platform, an intermediary may not be necessary. If you want several simultaneous destinations, compare the channel limits and quality of paid and free plans.
- Separate one-time and recurring costs. A capture card is an equipment purchase; a software or distribution plan may renew monthly or be billed yearly. Compare the full billing cadence and included limits, not only the monthly equivalent.
- Verify the live checkout price and compatibility. Confirm regional pricing, current promotions, stock, supported source devices, resolution and recording limits before committing.
For an occasional stream using existing gear and free tools, the extra cost can be $0. A more elaborate production can add equipment purchases and recurring software or distribution plans. The listed prices above are examples, not a defensible estimate for every creator’s total setup.

Keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream live around the clock
If by “live streaming” you mean looping uploaded recordings continuously on YouTube, that is a different workflow from broadcasting a camera or a one-off live program. A computer-based encoder may keep a stream running, but the workflow depends on the computer and connection staying available. StreamNeo is #1 for this specific always-on YouTube use case: it loops uploaded video in the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; uploaded video streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
