To add AI dubbing to a live stream, capture the speaker’s audio, send it continuously to a translation system, receive translated speech, and route that speech to a viewer-selectable audio track or listening path. Captions are a separate output: translated subtitles alone do not dub the stream. A custom build needs to connect the capture, translation, audio routing, publishing, and playback pieces, then test them together.
Decide whether you need translated speech, captions, or both
“Dubbing” means viewers can hear spoken audio in another language. Translated captions display text; they can help viewers follow the stream, but they do not provide translated speech. If you want both, plan for both outputs and test their timing together.
Decide how viewers will choose between the original audio and each translated version, adjust volume, and enable or disable captions. A caption-only plugin or cloud caption pipeline may be useful, but it does not by itself complete a spoken-dubbing setup.
Choose an implementation route
Custom real-time translation application
OpenAI’s Realtime translation API guide describes streaming source audio into a dedicated translation session and receiving translated audio and transcript updates. This route offers control over audio routing, playback, and language selection, but your application still has to capture and publish the media, build controls, handle reconnects, and monitor the full path.

Choose transport to fit where the audio is captured and processed: WebRTC is suited to browser media capture and playback; WebSockets fit a server or media worker that already receives raw audio. These are architectural choices, not interchangeable guarantees of end-to-end latency.
Google Cloud Live Stream for captions and caption translation
Google Cloud Live Stream’s caption documentation describes AI-generated captions and translated captions for HLS and DASH, including text streams and manifest/distribution configuration. The documented output is caption text. If you need spoken translated audio, verify that your chosen design can generate and route it separately.

OBS with LocalVocal for a caption workflow
The LocalVocal OBS plugin project describes local transcription, caption display and export, real-time caption translation, and RTMP captions. That supports a caption workflow; it does not establish a complete spoken dubbing path. Local processing requirements and performance depend on the setup.
Hosted live-dubbing or event service
Services such as StreamFluent advertise live captions and dubbing workflows, while Clevercast documents synthetic speech translation and viewer-selectable language tracks for event streams. Check current language support, integrations, pricing, data handling, and delay directly with the provider. Clevercast reports a 60–120-second delay for its described AI stream workflow; that is a vendor-reported figure for that workflow, not a general measure of live dubbing.

Build a custom dubbing pipeline
- Capture clean source speech. Send the speaker’s microphone or an isolated speech track to the translation input. Keep speakers on separate tracks when possible, especially in conversations: a mixed track makes speaker identity and overlapping speech harder to manage. Use a suitable existing microphone if available; buying new hardware is not a universal requirement.
- Create a translation session for each target language. The OpenAI guide’s architecture calls for a separate translation session per target language. For multiple speakers, preserve separate source tracks where possible so the system can better maintain speaker identity and manage overlap.
- Choose the media transport for your topology. Use WebRTC when a browser captures and plays media; use WebSockets when a server or media worker already has raw audio. Implement session creation, source-track delivery, translated-audio reception, error handling, and reconnect behavior in the application.
- Route translated speech to listeners. Make each translated output available as a distinct language track or a viewer-side listening path. Provide a way to return to the original audio and make language selection clear. If you also want subtitles, connect transcript output to a caption path rather than assuming the translated audio automatically supplies a finished caption experience.
- Integrate the output with the broadcast and player. The translation API is one component, not a complete streaming setup. Your application or media pipeline must publish the translated audio and any captions in a form the chosen platform and player can deliver. Test that exact publishing and playback path, including the viewer’s language controls.
- Measure the whole experience. Check capture-to-first-translated-audio delay, end-of-utterance delay, caption timing, and recovery after a disconnect separately. A model’s response speed does not establish end-to-end performance: capture, translation, buffering, publishing, and viewer playback all contribute.
Check platform latency and caption constraints
YouTube Live’s LiveBroadcasts API documentation describes normal, low, and ultra-low latency preferences. It says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions or resolutions above 1080p. If your design depends on captions or higher resolution, do not assume ultra-low mode will meet both needs; validate the intended combination on the target platform.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream documentation covers caption and translation output for HLS and DASH and notes that synchronizing captions with audio can reduce audio/text mismatch while increasing overall end-to-end media latency. Caption synchronization, interaction delay, and resolution can therefore affect one another. Test the precise platform, playback mode, and output combination you intend to use.

OBS’s WHIP Streaming Guide covers broadcasting via WebRTC using a provider URL and bearer token. It describes WHIP as a sub-second-latency protocol; that transport description is not a promise of sub-second end-to-end dubbed playback, and WHIP is not an AI translation feature. OBS documents simulcast in version 32.1.0 and newer and notes that WHIP is not supported in the Ubuntu 24.04 PPA release of OBS. The AI output still needs to be integrated into the stream.

- Have bilingual reviewers assess every source/target language pair using representative material from the actual programme.
- Include names, numbers, dates, specialist terminology, code-switching, accents, fast speech, music or noise, and overlapping speakers.
- Check voice consistency and whether viewers can distinguish and select original versus translated audio.
- Review caption accuracy, readability, and timing if captions are part of the experience.
- Measure first translated-audio delay, end-of-utterance delay, and caption timing independently of translation quality.
- Test dropped connections and recovery, including whether audio resumes on the correct language path.
Troubleshoot common problems
Viewers see translated text but hear no dubbed voice
The pipeline may be producing captions only, or the translated audio may not be routed into a published track or listening path. Confirm that the translation session returns audio and that the broadcast and player deliver it; caption configuration alone is insufficient.

The translated voice falls behind the speaker
Measure delay across capture, translation, buffering, publishing, and playback rather than attributing it solely to the translation model. Review the chosen latency mode and caption synchronization settings. For a hosted service, check the provider’s stated workflow and test its delay against the programme’s needs.
Captions are missing in ultra-low-latency YouTube mode
YouTube’s API documentation says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. Test a supported latency preference or revise the caption requirement and verify the resulting viewer experience.
Names, numbers, or overlapping speech are unreliable
Include those cases in bilingual preflight review. Check whether source tracks can remain separated and whether specialist vocabulary or programme-specific terms need handling in your application or chosen service. Do not treat a successful short sample as proof that all live content will translate well.
Audio does not return after a disconnect
Test reconnect and session recovery before broadcast. Verify that the application recreates or resumes the target-language sessions as designed, restores track routing, and gives viewers a clear fallback to original audio if translated output is unavailable.
