Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no YouTube-prescribed minimum VPS CPU or RAM specification for a 24/7 prerecorded stream. For simple playout of already encoded video, prioritize sustained outbound bandwidth, sufficient transfer allowance, access to your media files, and reliable process monitoring. If the VPS will transcode video in real time, benchmark the exact codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings on the VPS you plan to rent; no generic core count guarantees success.
Choose specs for the work your VPS will actually do
A VPS can either relay an existing encoded stream or decode and encode video as it runs. These are materially different workloads. YouTube accepts the incoming live feed and creates viewer output formats itself, so a VPS does not need to generate every playback rendition.
Playout or relay of already encoded video
If your playback setup sends source files without real-time transcoding, do not buy CPU cores on the assumption that they must encode the stream. The practical priorities are a stable upload path to YouTube, enough monthly transfer for continuous output, storage for the files and working data, and a process that can be supervised and restarted.
Real-time transcoding
Transcoding adds a workload-dependent CPU requirement. Resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder settings, and the number of simultaneous outputs all affect the load. Benchmark the specific VPS class with the actual stream settings and observe CPU use over sustained operation; a brief successful start does not establish that it can maintain the stream continuously. The official YouTube materials cited here do not specify a VPS CPU or RAM minimum.

Set the stream target before choosing bandwidth
Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the footage and audience, then size the outbound connection around the encoded video and audio bitrate. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations below are encoder targets, not guarantees about a hosting provider’s network capacity or transfer allowance. Figures are from YouTube’s current encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026.
| Output target | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
Do not treat these as monthly data caps. They describe recommended encoder bitrates; your provider’s included outbound transfer, overage charges, and throttling rules are separate plan terms. Allow practical headroom above the stream’s combined audio and video bitrate, and verify sustained upload performance to the YouTube ingestion service rather than relying only on a provider’s headline port speed.

Use YouTube’s ingest settings as the output specification
- Protocol: YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS, the RTMP protocol tunneled through SSL/TLS.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Match the codec and bitrate recommendations for the codec you actually use; do not mix values across codec tables.
- Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Stream key: Use the stream key associated with the YouTube Live setup you are sending to. Treat it as a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or shared configuration.
YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into output formats for viewers, so the VPS generally only needs to produce the selected ingest stream—not separate encodes for every viewer device or connection.
Size storage from the library, not a generic minimum
No universal storage minimum is established by the cited YouTube guidance. Add up the actual video files needed for the playlist, any working copies your playback or encoding process creates, and space for logs and operating-system updates. Keep the source media available for the whole run: a stream process cannot continue playing a file that has been deleted, moved, or become inaccessible.

For a playlist with frequent changes, allow room for both the existing files and incoming replacements until you have verified the new files and updated the playlist. Storage capacity is distinct from transfer allowance: the former holds files on the VPS, while the latter governs how much data the provider lets the server send out.
A practical VPS selection and launch workflow
- Set the output target. Decide resolution, frame rate, video codec, and audio settings. Use the matching YouTube encoder guidance to establish the stream bitrate and keyframe interval.
- Choose the pipeline. If the files are already encoded in the format and quality you intend to send, use a playout or relay path where possible. If you need live conversion, test the exact encoding workload on the candidate VPS class before committing.
- Check network and billing limits. Confirm sustained outbound capacity, included monthly transfer, overage terms, and throttling policies with the VPS provider. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations do not answer those commercial questions.
- Calculate disk needs. Total the source library, working copies, logs, and required operating-system headroom. Confirm the playback process can reach the files after reboot.
- Set up supervision. Configure the playback or encoder process to be monitored and restarted after failure or reboot. Keep useful logs, but ensure they do not expose the stream key.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Send a private or otherwise appropriate test stream, check that both audio and moving video are present, and observe the VPS and YouTube stream health over time. YouTube’s Live API health information includes issues such as bitrate and frame-rate problems.
- Trial the provider before a long commitment. Test the actual upload route and recovery behavior on the plan you intend to use. These are buyer checks, not guarantees about any particular provider.

Copyright, reused content, and monetization
A VPS does not grant rights to stream the files stored on it. Before scheduling a 24/7 loop, make sure you have the rights or other legal basis to use the video and audio on YouTube, and review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and location.
YouTube’s channel monetization policy says highly repetitive content with little educational value, commentary, narrative, or variation may not monetize. Its reused-content policy is assessed across the channel and is separate from copyright enforcement: having permission to use material does not by itself establish that the content meets reused-content requirements. Make authorship, meaningful transformation, and value to viewers clear.
Continuous runtime is not a shortcut to monetization eligibility. YouTube’s eligibility information says livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand do not count toward its stated qualified public watch-hour threshold; channels also face other eligibility requirements and review.
Troubleshooting a 24/7 VPS stream
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports bitrate or frame-rate health issues | Encoder output settings or an unstable upload path | Check the actual output bitrate and frame rate against the target, confirm the keyframe interval, and test sustained upload performance. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. |
| Video plays but audio is missing | Source file, audio selection, or encoding configuration | Test the file locally or in the playback pipeline, confirm the intended audio track is selected, and verify audio reaches the test stream before scheduling the loop. |
| Stream stops after a VPS restart or process failure | Process supervision or startup configuration | Check logs and configure the playback process to start after reboot and restart after a failure. Verify that the media path and stream-key configuration remain available. |
| Stream works initially but later hits a provider limit | Transfer cap, throttling, or billing policy | Review the VPS plan’s outbound transfer allowance and overage or throttling terms, then compare them with the continuous bitrate workload. |
| Playback fails partway through the playlist | Missing, moved, or unreadable media file | Check that every playlist entry points to an accessible file and that storage remains available for the full library and any working copies. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube require a particular number of VPS cores or RAM for 24/7 streaming?
No minimum CPU or RAM specification is stated in the YouTube materials covered here. The workload depends on whether the VPS relays encoded media or transcodes it.
