How to Add a Countdown Timer to a YouTube Live Stream

How to Add a Countdown Timer to a YouTube Live Stream
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To show a countdown to viewers, add the timer to the scene your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS Studio, the simplest route is to load a timer webpage as a Browser Source, position it in a scene, then check the YouTube preview before going live. A timer window open elsewhere on your computer will not appear in the broadcast unless it is part of that outgoing scene.

Add a countdown timer in OBS Studio

  1. Choose the scene. In OBS, select or create the scene that should display the countdown, such as a “Starting Soon” scene. Keep in mind that only sources in the scene being sent to the encoder are part of the stream.
  2. Add a Browser Source. In the Sources dock, select +, choose Browser, and enter the timer page’s browser-view URL. OBS Browser Source can load web pages from a URL or from the local machine. See the OBS Browser Source documentation.
  3. Set the viewport dimensions. Enter width and height to suit the timer layout, then position and resize it on the OBS canvas. OBS documents 800 × 600 as the Browser Source default viewport; that is not a required stream resolution.
  4. Check appearance and placement. Keep the timer within the intended safe area and away from the host, captions, or important footage. If it has an opaque background or unwanted controls, check whether the timer provider offers a transparent or overlay view. Support for transparency and styling varies by timer; do not assume a universal setting or CSS fix.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or select the stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain this connection. Treat the stream key as private: YouTube describes it as the credential that routes your encoder’s feed, and an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room (manage live stream settings).
  6. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Confirm the timer is visible in the incoming preview and check sound separately. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s documented flow is to wait for the preview, then select Go live. Test in advance and monitor stream health using YouTube’s encoder settings and testing guidance.

Choose a timer that fits the show

The timer URL, styling, start behavior, and controls depend on the implementation you choose. Before relying on it during an event, check whether it meets the needs of your scene:

  • Transparency: Does it have a transparent overlay view, or will it cover the video with a background?
  • Start and reset: Does it begin automatically when loaded, or must someone start it? Can it be reset if the program is delayed?
  • Control: Can a producer control it remotely, if that matters to your workflow?
  • Offline behavior: Does the timer need an internet connection, or can it load locally?
  • Layout and sound: Can you customize its dimensions and appearance? Does it need an audio alert, and is that alert appropriate for the broadcast?

OBS supports loading a URL or local page, but its documentation does not prescribe a countdown script or behavior. TimerBox, for example, describes copying a generated URL into an OBS Browser Source (TimerBox); Stagetimer demonstrates a browser timer and transparent background in an OBS scene (Stagetimer tutorial). These are service examples, not independent tests or endorsements. Follow the selected provider’s current instructions.

Do not confuse a countdown with YouTube’s break overlay

YouTube’s break overlay is intended to show an away slate while the streamer takes a break. It is not the same as a creator-designed “Starting Soon” countdown. YouTube’s setup uses a Browser Source in the encoder and recommends testing the overlay with its Take a Break flow. The overlay does not control audio sources, so a visual change alone will not mute a microphone. See YouTube’s break overlay help.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect timer

  • The timer does not appear in OBS: Confirm the intended scene is active, the Browser Source URL is correct, and its width and height are nonzero and large enough for the page. OBS lists the URL and viewport fields in its Browser Source documentation.
  • The timer has a background or extra controls: Look for a provider-supported transparent overlay URL or display customization. Not every timer offers these options; Stagetimer’s tutorial is an example, not proof of universal support (tutorial).
  • You see it locally, but viewers do not: Make sure the timer is in the scene actually being sent to the encoder. Then check the incoming YouTube Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast, as advised in YouTube’s testing guidance.
  • Your encoder does not have an OBS-style Browser Source: Browser-source support differs between encoders. YouTube notes that not all encoders support browser sources in the same way; consult the encoder’s own current help (YouTube break overlay help).
  • You suspect the stream key was exposed: Keep it private and reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube explains stream key management at Manage live stream settings.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not a way to put a countdown over a camera broadcast. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
