To make OBS try to start streaming when Windows launches, start OBS with its official --startstreaming launch parameter. For an automated launch, set the working directory (the shortcut’s Start in field) to the folder containing obs64.exe. Configure the YouTube stream and its stream key first, then test the full restart sequence: this starts OBS’s streaming action, but does not guarantee Windows, the network, OBS, or YouTube will be ready or connected after every restart.
What this setup does—and what it does not
OBS’s --startstreaming parameter tells OBS to automatically start streaming when launched. It does not, by itself, ensure that a YouTube broadcast exists, select the intended broadcast in every configuration, or overcome a failed connection. YouTube’s stream key identifies where the encoder sends its feed; the key and the stream settings must already be configured.
There are two common ways to launch OBS at Windows startup: a shortcut in the Startup folder, which runs when that user signs in, or Task Scheduler, which offers more control over the trigger and conditions. Neither method guarantees a successful stream after a power interruption or update. Test the method on the computer and Windows account that will actually run the stream.
Before you automate OBS
- Configure OBS’s YouTube connection. In OBS, set the service and stream key for the intended YouTube stream. YouTube describes the stream key as the information that tells an encoder where to send its feed. Treat it like a credential: do not publish or share it.
- Check YouTube’s stream settings. YouTube’s auto-start setting lets the encoder control when streaming starts. Check whether it is enabled for the stream you intend to use; do not assume it carries over the way you want when reusing stream settings.
- Check the scene, sources, and audio. Confirm that OBS opens to the intended scene and that the video and audio sources work without someone needing to intervene.
- Know what happens at sign-in. A Startup-folder shortcut is tied to the user’s sign-in. If the computer restarts but nobody signs in, that approach may not launch OBS. Consider Task Scheduler if you need a different trigger or more control, and test its behavior on your machine.
- Plan for network recovery. Windows may start before the internet connection is ready. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; a launch parameter cannot make an unavailable connection available.
Option 1: Start OBS from the Windows Startup folder
This is the simpler approach when the stream should start after the account running OBS signs in.

- Find the OBS executable. Locate
obs64.exein the OBS installation folder. OBS’s launch-parameter guidance says an automated launch should use the folder containing this executable as its working directory. - Create a shortcut. Right-click
obs64.exeand choose Show more options if necessary, then Create shortcut. If Windows will not create one in that folder, create it on the desktop and move it later. - Add the launch parameter. Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and open the Shortcut tab. In Target, keep the existing executable path and append a space followed by
--startstreaming. For example, a target might look like"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming; use the actual path on your computer. - Set the working directory. In Start in, enter the folder containing
obs64.exe, not the executable filename itself. For the example above, that would beC:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bit. Your installation location may differ. - Put the shortcut in Startup. Press
Win+R, entershell:startup, and press Enter. Move or copy the configured shortcut into the folder that opens. This is the Startup folder for the current user. - Test it. Close OBS, launch the shortcut manually, and verify that OBS attempts to stream. Then restart Windows, sign in to the same account, and check OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room.
If the Target field reports an invalid path, check that the executable path remains inside quotation marks and that --startstreaming comes after the closing quotation mark, separated by a space. The Start in field should be a folder path without quotation marks added unnecessarily.
Option 2: Start OBS with Task Scheduler
Task Scheduler is useful when you need a startup trigger or conditions beyond a simple sign-in shortcut. The names and available choices can vary by Windows version. OBS specifically advises setting the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe for scheduled or other automated launches.

- Open Task Scheduler. Search for Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu and open it.
- Create a task. Choose Create Task rather than relying on a basic task wizard, so you can review the trigger and action settings. Give the task a recognizable name, such as Start OBS streaming.
- Choose a trigger. On the Triggers tab, add the startup or sign-in trigger that matches your use case. A sign-in trigger requires that user to sign in; test carefully if you choose a system-start trigger instead.
- Set the program and arguments. On the Actions tab, add a Start a program action. Set Program/script to the full path to
obs64.exe, Add arguments to--startstreaming, and Start in to the folder containingobs64.exe. - Review conditions and account behavior. Check the task’s Conditions and Settings tabs for options that could prevent it from running, such as power-related conditions. Choose an account and run mode appropriate to your setup; do not assume a task configured for one sign-in context will behave identically in another.
- Run a controlled test. Save the task, use Task Scheduler’s run command, and verify that OBS opens and attempts to stream. Then test a Windows restart and check both OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room.
Task Scheduler can control when OBS is launched; it does not prove that the YouTube event is selected correctly or that a stream connection will succeed. Confirm those separately during testing.
Test the whole restart path
- Start with a normal manual stream. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before relying on the stream, and confirm that the intended video, audio, and event are present.
- Close OBS and test the Startup shortcut or scheduled task directly. Confirm that the correct OBS profile and scene load and that streaming is attempted.
- Restart Windows under the conditions you expect in real use: the same account, sign-in behavior, and network connection. Do not count a test that merely opens OBS as proof that YouTube is live.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for the incoming preview and the stream’s actual state. Monitor audio and video quality, and verify that viewers can access the event as intended.
- Repeat after a realistic interruption if unattended operation matters. Record whether the computer needed a sign-in, whether the network was ready, and whether OBS reconnected without help.
Network headroom and recovery limits
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with headroom. Its streaming-tips guidance calls for the primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20% when using backup encoder capacity. This is a recommendation, not a recovery guarantee or a measured success rate. If the connection drops, the stream can break; if the initial connection fails after restart, do not assume OBS will recover automatically. An OBS community discussion raises that initial-connection failure as a possible limitation, so treat it as something to test rather than a documented guarantee.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS opens after sign-in but does not attempt to stream | The shortcut Target may lack the parameter, or the task action may not pass it. | Confirm that --startstreaming is a separate argument after the executable path. Test by launching the configured shortcut or running the task manually. |
| The shortcut or task fails to find OBS | The executable path or working directory may be wrong. | Point the program to the actual obs64.exe; set Start in to its containing folder. |
| OBS starts, but YouTube does not show the expected stream | The stream key, destination, event, or YouTube auto-start setting may not match the intended setup. | Check OBS’s configured YouTube service and key, then inspect the event and auto-start setting in YouTube. Verify the incoming preview in Live Control Room. |
| It works when launched manually but not after restart | The Startup shortcut may depend on a user sign-in, or the scheduled task’s trigger, account, or conditions may differ. | Review the trigger and run conditions, then test with the same sign-in pattern and account expected during unattended use. |
| OBS attempts to stream but does not connect | The network may not be ready, may have lost connectivity, or may lack sufficient upload capacity. | Check internet availability and YouTube’s preview, then retry after connectivity returns. Leave the upload headroom YouTube recommends, including its 20% allowance when using backup encoder capacity. |
| The first connection fails and the stream stays offline | Automatic recovery after an initial connection failure is not guaranteed by the launch parameter. | Test this failure case on the target setup. If unattended continuity is essential, use a method designed to run in the cloud rather than relying on a home PC restart alone. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded recordings, StreamNeo avoids relying on a home computer, Windows sign-in, or local internet connection to keep OBS running. It is a cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists—not a way to stream live camera footage—and it streams to YouTube.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery.
