For a reliable YouTube Live stream, choose a resolution and frame rate your upload connection can sustain, then set the encoder to YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your codec. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), and leave about 20% upload bandwidth in reserve. These settings are for YouTube Live ingestion, not a universal recipe for other platforms.
Choose settings that fit your stream and connection
Resolution affects image detail; frame rate affects how smoothly motion appears. Raising either can require more bitrate. The right choice balances those factors against your available upload bandwidth, the kind of footage you are streaming, and how reliably viewers can play it. There is no one best setting for every channel: start with a suitable quality level, test it on the actual connection, and adjust if the stream is unstable.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. For SDR, it lists square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709; for HDR, it lists H.265 and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
YouTube Live recommended ingest bitrates
The following are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in Mbps, according to its encoder guidance accessed October 3, 2026. They are recommendations, not guarantees of image quality in every scene, and should not be applied to other streaming platforms without checking their current requirements.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
YouTube also lists minimum ranges. Do not confuse a minimum with the recommended target: for 1080p at 60 fps, for example, the minimum shown is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264, while the recommended rates are 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. A stream sent at a minimum may have less room for complex movement or detail than one sent at the recommended bitrate.
Check upload bandwidth and leave headroom
Measure upload speed, not download speed. YouTube says the total bitrate of the stream must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. As YouTube puts it, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” A connection can be shared with other people or devices, so a fast advertised or office-wide connection does not necessarily mean all of that capacity is available to your encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips recommend testing under conditions similar to the event.
- Compare the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate with the upload capacity actually available while streaming.
- Leave the recommended 20% reserve instead of configuring the stream at the connection’s full measured capacity.
- Account for any other streams, including a backup stream, that will use the same connection.
- Test at the time and place of the event when possible, since shared use can change the available upload bandwidth.
Select latency and playback settings
YouTube detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate by default; custom stream keys allow manual resolution settings. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and network connections. Latency is the delay between capture at the camera or encoder and appearance in the stream. Lower latency can increase playback buffering. If real-time audience interaction is not important, the lowest-latency option may matter less than steady playback; YouTube’s guidance does not offer the low-latency option at 2160p/4K.

Choose the highest resolution and frame rate that remain reliable on your connection and make sense for the material. Fast motion may benefit from a higher frame rate, while a static presentation may not need it. Whichever you choose, verify the result with a representative test rather than assuming a higher setting will always look better to viewers.
Choose a streaming setup
Webcam or mobile setup
YouTube offers webcam streaming as a simpler option for a straightforward camera broadcast. It can be appropriate when you do not need screen sharing, a complex scene layout, or multiple external audio and video sources. YouTube notes that better equipment can improve live-stream quality, but the guidance does not establish a particular brand or model as best.
Encoder setup
An encoder can be software running on a computer or standalone hardware. YouTube describes encoder streaming for screen sharing and gameplay, external audio and video hardware, and more involved productions with multiple cameras or microphones. The more sources and transitions your show has, the more important it is to test the complete production, not just the encoder’s connection.

Set up a YouTube encoder stream
- Enable YouTube Live. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, allow for activation, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s Live Control Room before scheduling around a first broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
- Choose the production method. Use webcam or mobile streaming for a simpler camera broadcast, or an encoder for screen sharing, external equipment, and more complex production.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if you think it has been exposed. YouTube explains stream keys and encoder setup.
- Configure the encoder. Select the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval. For YouTube, follow the recommended bitrate table above, use CBR, and set a 2-second keyframe interval that does not exceed 4 seconds.
- Test and monitor. Send representative motion and audio, check the Live Control Room preview, and watch stream health and error messages. Confirm that the configured bitrate is sustainable on the connection you will use.
Preflight checks before going live
- Run an upload-speed test and reserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Check representative speech, music, motion, and scene changes in a test transmission.
- Review the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast.
- Set up at least two hours ahead and start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event, as YouTube’s streaming tips suggest.
- Monitor stream health and any error messages during the broadcast.
- If you have a backup encoder, test the failover before the event rather than relying on an untested recovery plan.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The stream drops or quality becomes unstable
First compare the stream’s total bitrate with available upload capacity. Leave headroom, check whether other devices or streams are consuming bandwidth, and test again under similar network conditions. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and retest.
The stream does not appear in YouTube Studio
Check that the encoder is using the stream URL and stream key for the intended YouTube stream. A mistyped or outdated key can prevent the stream from reaching the right destination. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.

Viewers report buffering
Check encoder stability and the chosen latency setting. Lower latency can increase buffering, and a stream that pushes the limits of upload capacity may be unstable. Retest with more upload headroom or a less demanding configuration. At 2160p/4K, YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable.
The encoder reports a keyframe or format warning
Confirm that YouTube’s recommended keyframe interval is set to 2 seconds and does not exceed 4 seconds. Review the video codec, frame rate, audio format, and other encoder settings against YouTube’s current requirements rather than assuming settings for another service will match.
