For a documentary channel, the right choice hinges on whether you are looping a finished film or producing a live programme. OBS is a flexible local production tool. A prerecorded-video cloud service avoids making the mini PC responsible for continuously encoding and sending that file. A full production suite is unnecessary if all you need is a video loop; it matters when you need live inputs, scenes, overlays, or external audio and video hardware.
Check whether the mini PC can sustain OBS
OBS supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. On Linux or Unix, its stated requirements include an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland. These are compatibility requirements, not a promise of streaming capacity. CPU and GPU load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS explicitly cautions that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee that a machine can stream or record the selected workload. See OBS system requirements.
Before committing a mini PC to unattended use, test the actual stream configuration. A static image is an inadequate stand-in for a documentary with motion, changing scenes, overlays, and audio. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast, then monitoring stream health and encoder messages. There is no universal minimum mini-PC specification established by the official documents cited here.

Set up a continuous YouTube stream with OBS
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. YouTube live-streaming requirements.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Connecting the encoder creates a watch page. - Build the OBS scene for the actual programme. Add the video source and any required audio, titles, or other production elements. If you need cameras, microphones, overlays, or multiple scenes, configure and test them before launch; added sources and scene complexity affect the workload the mini PC must encode.
- Set the output to a sustainable target. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols, along with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; it lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection to its servers. Use a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube encoder settings.
- Match bitrate to resolution, frame rate, and available upload. YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps; its listed minimum settings for those combinations are 5 Mbps and 3 Mbps, respectively. These figures are encoder-setting guidance, not evidence that your connection or mini PC can sustain them. Run a speed test and choose settings the real workload can maintain.
- Test and watch stream health. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test, use representative audio and motion, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. A healthy-looking static test may not reveal problems that occur with the full documentary, multiple sources, or sustained system load.
- Plan the archive separately from the live duration. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours will produce one complete replay; if a complete archive matters, plan shorter sessions and verify the result in YouTube Studio. Make an unattended mini-PC setup recoverable
OBS running successfully is not proof that the whole system will stay live unattended. The official encoder guidance explains setup, testing, and monitoring; it does not certify a mini PC for 24/7 operation or guarantee recovery after a power cut, network outage, or software failure.
- Validate the complete chain: mini PC, encoder, upload connection, YouTube stream, and playback of the finished programme.
- Decide how you will detect a failure: local observation alone will not tell you that the stream stopped while you are away. Choose and test a monitoring approach appropriate to your setup.
- Test recovery deliberately: verify what happens after a network interruption, encoder exit, or restart before relying on unattended operation. Restart scripts, watchdogs, UPS devices, and restart schedules are separate operational choices, not guarantees supplied by OBS or YouTube.
- Keep archive expectations realistic: a continuous broadcast and a complete replay are different requirements; use sessions under YouTube’s stated 12-hour automatic-archive threshold when archive coverage is important.
Costs and operating trade-offs
OBS is available at no charge, but local operation still depends on your own mini PC, electricity, network connection, and time spent monitoring and recovering it. The cited YouTube and OBS documents do not establish a universal cost for those items or a continuous-stream reliability figure for a mini PC.

Copyright and channel suitability
A technically stable stream is not automatically a permissible one. Before looping a documentary, confirm you have the rights needed for its video, soundtrack, photographs, and other included material to be broadcast on YouTube. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements also make channel eligibility relevant; review the applicable rules and your channel’s status before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
