For a repeating playlist of local video files in OBS, use VLC Video Source: it supports multiple playlist items and has a Loop Playlist option enabled by default. For one local file, use Media Source and enable its separate Loop option. Neither source ensures a nonstop YouTube broadcast by itself; your computer, OBS, network, encoder and YouTube ingest still need to stay available.
Which OBS source should you choose?

How to set up a looping playlist with VLC Video Source
- Install VLC and check its architecture. OBS requires VLC for VLC Video Source to appear. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS after installation and check the Add Source list.
- Add the source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Create a new source, then add your local video files in the source properties.
- Set playlist order and looping. Leave Loop Playlist on to start again at the beginning after the last item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you want the files to play in a fixed order.
- Check visibility behavior. The documented default is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If the source may be hidden or placed on an inactive scene while playback must continue, choose a visibility behavior that suits that requirement. This controls the media source, not whether the outgoing livestream ends.
- Test the full scene. Confirm the files play in the intended sequence, check audio and scene visibility, then verify the YouTube stream separately. A looping source is only one part of a continuous broadcast.
When Media Source is the right choice
Use Media Source for one local file, or when you need its per-file playback controls. In the source properties, turn on Loop if the file should repeat; it is off by default. Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate control and is on by default, so check it if scene switching or visibility changes matter.
OBS lists support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Other documented controls include optional hardware decoding, hiding the source at the end of playback, unloading it while inactive, playback speed and color range. Consult the official source documentation for the control descriptions.

What the source comparison does—and does not—tell you
VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries for extended media support, and VLC must be installed for it to appear in OBS. Its documented properties also include a 400 ms default network-caching value, audio-track selection and subtitle controls. That default is not a recommended setting for YouTube playlist URLs.
The OBS documentation describes local-file playback controls but does not establish that YouTube playlist pages or video URLs can be used directly as a durable nonstop program. Nor does it show that VLC Video Source is more reliable than Media Source for that purpose. Treat URL-based playback as dependent on the OBS/VLC version and the service involved, and test it in your setup rather than assuming the cache option guarantees compatibility.
Likewise, the loop and visibility settings do not guarantee 24/7 uptime. They do not keep your computer powered, repair an internet connection, recover an encoder failure or ensure YouTube continues receiving the stream. Plan monitoring and recovery separately.
Third-party playlist option
The community Media Playlist Source resource is another workflow to consider. Its listing describes editing a playlist without restarting the video, remembering the current file across OBS restarts and selecting an item directly. It is not an official OBS source; the listing says current versions require OBS 31 or later and notes that audio-track and subtitle selection are not supported. Plugin compatibility and availability can change, so check the current release information before installing.
