A pause at every repeat points to the loop boundary, source timestamps, or audio/video duration; a freeze at random times points more toward FFmpeg or encoder load, YouTube ingest settings, or the outgoing connection. Check the evidence before changing flags: the FFmpeg command and logs, the MP4’s stream layout, and YouTube Live Control Room’s health messages all matter.
Identify the freeze pattern
Record the time of each freeze and whether audio continues. Compare what viewers see with FFmpeg’s output and, if you are saving a local archive, with that file too. A repeatable pause precisely at each loop join is a different clue from a freeze that develops unpredictably or affects only some viewers.
- At every loop join: investigate input looping, timestamps, keyframes, and whether audio and video have different durations.
- Intermittent or worsening over time: inspect FFmpeg progress and warnings, CPU load, YouTube’s timestamped health messages, and upload stability.
- Only some viewers report buffering: compare their reports with the encoder preview and Live Control Room rather than assuming the source file itself is at fault.
Without the actual command, FFmpeg version, file metadata, logs, and YouTube health messages, no single cause can be confirmed.
Check that FFmpeg is looping the intended input
FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output. Put -stream_loop -1 immediately before the -i for the MP4 you want to repeat. For a file being played as a live source, -re can pace input reading in real time. Confirm option placement and behavior against the FFmpeg version installed and the full command you are using; moving an input option after its input can change what it applies to. If the file does not repeat, check that the loop option precedes the correct input and that the input can seek back to its beginning. Do not assume that adding more timestamp flags will solve a loop-boundary pause.
Diagnose a pause at every loop boundary
Compare audio and video durations
Check whether the MP4 contains audio and compare its duration with the video. If audio runs longer, the video may hold on its final frame at the join. If audio is not needed, test a version without it and see whether the boundary pause changes. This is a possibility to test, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

Inspect timestamps and keyframes
Stream-copy looping relies on source timing and keyframe conditions. A source that does not repeat cleanly may pause or behave unexpectedly at the join. Try a remuxed copy as a diagnostic, then compare its loop behavior with the original. The FFmpeg guide on looping and stream loop options discusses these constraints; a remux is a test, not a promise that every source will be fixed.
Make one change at a time and note whether the pause moves, shortens, or disappears. That helps distinguish a source-boundary problem from a fault later in the encoding or delivery chain.

Check FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health
Review FFmpeg’s stream mapping, warnings, output progress, and CPU load while the freeze occurs. Compare the local output or archive and encoder preview with YouTube Live Control Room’s health indicator and timestamped errors. If the encoder preview is healthy but viewers receive a poor live result, YouTube says the outbound connection may be responsible; check upload strength and ask your ISP to investigate persistent connection faults. Use the YouTube Live Control Room stream health guidance alongside the encoder logs.
Let the specific error determine the next step. YouTube reports configuration issues involving codec or profile, resolution, bitrate, audio/video stream count, interlacing, and GOP or keyframe interval. A general recipe cannot diagnose all of those conditions.

Match the stream to YouTube’s ingest requirements
YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds. Choose the bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually in use, and make sure the connection can sustain it. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings and live streaming error messages rather than applying settings intended for a different setup.
If upload capacity cannot sustain your chosen resolution and bitrate, reduce the resolution or bitrate to a suitable level and check stream health again. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages during the event.

Troubleshoot RTMPS connection errors
RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. If YouTube reports a connection timeout or certificate error, confirm that the server URL was copied from Live Control Room, that the selected protocol matches the URL, and that your encoder supports RTMPS. Check YouTube’s guidance for any port requirement relevant to the error. See YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
