To schedule a YouTube livestream playlist from Ubuntu, create the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, prepare an ordered FFmpeg playlist, and arrange for the encoder process to start on your Ubuntu machine. These are separate schedules: launching FFmpeg sends video to YouTube, but a scheduled encoder stream may still require you to check its preview and click Go live. Test the complete workflow before relying on an unattended event.
1. Schedule the YouTube event first
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then choose Manage and Schedule stream.
- Reuse a previous configuration or create a new stream. Set the title, visibility, date and time, and other event details.
- Confirm the event time and privacy setting on the event page before sharing it. YouTube notes that privacy defaults differ by age group and can be changed.
- Save the event and copy its watch-page URL if you want to promote it. YouTube says scheduling lets viewers set reminders and gives creators a URL to share (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
The Studio interface may change. For an encoder-based scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow includes checking the incoming preview and clicking Go live; do not assume that starting FFmpeg alone makes the event public.
2. Build an ordered playlist for FFmpeg
The FFmpeg concat demuxer can read a text file listing media files in playback order. For example, create playlist.ffconcat:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip1.mp4'
file 'clip2.mp4'
file 'clip3.mp4'
The optional ffconcat version 1.0 marker must be the exact first line, without leading spaces or a byte-order mark, for automatic format recognition. The concat script format and its requirements are documented in the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Check compatibility before choosing stream copy
For concat-demuxer stream copy, the files need compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. The demuxer adjusts timestamps so each file follows the previous one, but inaccurate durations, truncated inputs, or mismatched properties can cause artifacts. If your clips differ, do not assume -c copy will work; normalize or re-encode them to compatible streams, then test transitions and audio continuity.
- Keep the playlist and every referenced media file readable by the account that will launch FFmpeg.
- Use paths and quoting or escaping appropriate to the concat script syntax, especially when filenames contain spaces or special characters.
- Test the exact playlist with your installed FFmpeg build. Documentation for the current FFmpeg master branch does not establish that every option works identically in every Ubuntu package or with every media set.
The concat format documentation does not provide one universally correct looping command for all builds and inputs. Check your installed version’s manual or ffmpeg -h full and verify the intended loop behavior before scheduling. Do not rely on an untested command for a live event.

3. Connect FFmpeg to the scheduled stream
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- Configure FFmpeg’s output to send to that destination. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS encoder ingest and recommends RTMPS; use the server or destination field for the stream URL and the separate key field for the key (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: use a protected environment variable or a configuration file with restricted permissions rather than placing a real key in a public script or repository. Avoid logging it.
- Start a rehearsal and check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before the event. The exact FFmpeg command depends on your installed version, source formats, and chosen output settings; test it with your own files and current YouTube stream details rather than copying a command that has not been validated for your setup.
4. Choose encoder settings and check your upload
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose bitrate for the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec, then check the current YouTube guidance because recommendations can change.
| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate range |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended encoder-setting ranges, not measurements of Indian broadband performance. Run a speed test on the connection you will actually use and leave upload headroom above the stream bitrate; the available sources establish no India-wide ISP or bandwidth figure. Test with audio and motion similar to the real playlist, inspect the preview, and monitor Live Control Room stream-health messages.

5. Schedule the Ubuntu process separately
YouTube scheduling controls the event page and its live workflow. A host scheduler such as cron or systemd controls when Ubuntu launches FFmpeg; it does not override the event’s privacy, preview, or Go live requirements.
- Check the Ubuntu machine’s configured time zone and compare it with the time displayed for the YouTube event. Do not assume either cron or the YouTube interface is using IST without verifying it.
- Run a test event or private/unlisted rehearsal to confirm that the scheduler starts the intended command at the intended local time.
- Keep logs that help diagnose startup and encoding failures, but ensure they do not expose the stream key. Decide how the process will be stopped and what should happen if it exits unexpectedly.
- Follow YouTube’s preparation advice: set up encoders at least two hours ahead, start them at least 15 minutes before the event, check the preview before going live, verify access from the channel or watch page and a mobile device, and monitor audio and video (YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder). These are preparation recommendations, not cron timing rules.
A host-side schedule is useful for repeatable launches, but unattended operation needs a tested time-zone setup, process supervision, protected credentials, logging, and a clear stop plan.

6. Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube receives no video: Check that FFmpeg is reading the intended files, that the stream URL and key belong to this event, and that Ubuntu can read the playlist and media files. Confirm the current preview in Live Control Room.
- The playlist breaks at a clip boundary: Check stream, codec, time-base, and duration compatibility. Truncated files or inaccurate durations can produce timestamp artifacts; normalize or re-encode incompatible clips and test again.
- The stream health warning reports delivery trouble: Check the actual upload connection, lower the target bitrate if it is not sustainable, and test again with headroom. Review YouTube’s current bitrate recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- The scheduled job starts at the wrong time: Compare the machine’s configured time zone with the event time shown in Studio. Verify timing with a rehearsal rather than assuming the scheduler and event page interpret time identically.
- The encoder preview appears, but viewers do not see a public event: Check the event’s visibility and scheduled status, then follow the Live Control Room preview and Go live workflow for the scheduled encoder stream.
