FFmpeg processes the inputs you give it; it does not, by itself, enumerate a YouTube playlist. For a playlist URL, use yt-dlp to select and download the entries, then use FFmpeg to merge or process the resulting files. If you already have individual media URLs or files, pass each intended item to FFmpeg as a distinct, correctly ordered input.
First identify what is repeating
A command may involve yt-dlp, FFmpeg, or both. If yt-dlp is selecting the same item, inspect the URL and yt-dlp’s playlist-selection options. If FFmpeg is receiving inputs, inspect every -i argument and its order. A loop option cannot correct a URL or input list that only identifies one video.
Write down the exact command and check the installed yt-dlp version with yt-dlp --version. Extractor behavior and available options can change between versions, so the version matters when diagnosing a reproducible problem.
Choose the right workflow for the URL
For a YouTube playlist URL, let yt-dlp enumerate the entries
yt-dlp documents playlist and item-selection options. Use the playlist URL when you want multiple entries; use FFmpeg afterward if you need to merge formats or process downloaded media. The official yt-dlp options are documented at yt-dlp general options.

For a single video URL with playlist context, exclude the playlist
A YouTube watch URL can identify a video while also carrying playlist context. If you want only that video, yt-dlp’s --no-playlist option selects the video alone when a URL refers to both a video and a playlist. If you want the whole playlist, use the playlist URL instead.
For an existing FFmpeg pipeline, provide distinct inputs
FFmpeg accepts multiple inputs through separate -i arguments. If another part of your pipeline supplies the media URLs or files, verify that it supplies one distinct input per intended playlist entry. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes input handling and option ordering: FFmpeg documentation.
Check playlist selection before processing the whole list

Inspect the URL and decide whether it is a single-video watch URL with playlist parameters or a playlist URL.

For a playlist, run a small diagnostic selection, such as
--playlist-items 1-3. Print or save the selected titles and IDs, then confirm that the entries are distinct before adding FFmpeg processing. yt-dlp documents--playlist-itemsfor selecting playlist positions.Special offer. Remove unintended item restrictions if you intend to process the full playlist. An explicit selection can deliberately constrain which positions yt-dlp processes.

Once the selected entries are correct, use FFmpeg for the merging or processing your workflow requires.
When FFmpeg receives the inputs directly
Read the command from left to right and account for every input. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, and input/output options are reset between files. Make sure each intended video appears as a separate input, or that the list or demuxer you deliberately use contains the intended sequence. Do not assume that passing a playlist URL to one -i makes FFmpeg enumerate YouTube playlist entries.
There is no universal corrected command without seeing how the URLs, files, and options are constructed. For a case-specific diagnosis, the useful evidence is the complete command, the shape of the URL, the installed yt-dlp and FFmpeg versions, and the relevant output.

Keep repeat downloads separate from repeat selection
If the problem occurs on a later run—videos downloaded successfully before are being downloaded again—yt-dlp’s --download-archive can record successful downloads and skip those videos on subsequent runs. The archive does not fix a single run in which an incorrectly constructed input repeatedly selects the first item. See the yt-dlp FAQ on downloading only new playlist videos.
Troubleshoot the remaining cases

Only the video named in the watch URL is selected: decide whether you want that one video or the playlist. Use
--no-playlistfor the former; use the playlist URL for the latter. -
The same playlist positions are selected every time: inspect

The diagnostic selection shows distinct entries, but the FFmpeg output repeats: inspect how yt-dlp’s outputs are passed into FFmpeg. Confirm that the inputs are distinct and in the expected order; a correct selection upstream does not guarantee a correct input list downstream.

Files appear duplicated on a later run: use a stable download-archive file to skip previously successful downloads. This addresses reruns, not repeated first-item selection within one run.

The cause is still unclear: reproduce with the exact command and a representative URL after removing private tokens. Include the operating system, yt-dlp version, and verbose output when reporting the issue. The yt-dlp FAQ describes the importance of current-version and reproducible command details.
