Use three separate pieces: schedule each live event in YouTube Studio, run a local encoder for each playlist, and use a systemd timer to start the corresponding encoder service. A YouTube event’s scheduled start time does not start a process on your Linux host, and a systemd timer does not create or start the YouTube event for you.
How the three scheduling layers fit together
Each layer has a different job. Keep them separate when planning and troubleshooting:
- YouTube live event: creates the event and watch page in Live Control Room. You connect an encoder, inspect its preview, and start the event through YouTube’s workflow. See YouTube’s encoder setup and live-stream workflow.
- Local encoder service: reads the intended media playlist and sends its output to YouTube’s ingest server using that event’s stream URL and stream key.
- systemd timer: activates the local service at the time you configure. The timer does not sequence media, create a YouTube event, or click YouTube’s Go live control.
For multiple destinations, the easiest-to-reason-about design is one independently configured service and timer per playlist and stream. That gives each stream a clear event, key, playlist, schedule, log trail, and failure policy instead of one large job whose parts can be difficult to isolate.
Check YouTube’s limits before planning concurrent streams
YouTube Help documents simultaneous limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply. These figures are from YouTube Help documentation accessed in 2026, and platform limits can change, so check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility and limits page before relying on them.

Plan within both caps. A separate key for each stream makes the per-key limit easier to track, but does not raise the channel-wide limit. Also confirm your host has enough CPU or GPU capacity for all encoder processes and enough outbound bandwidth for their combined feeds; there is no single capacity figure that fits every resolution, codec, or host.
Prepare an event and a protected configuration for each stream
1. Create the YouTube event
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream for each destination. Keep a record mapping each event to its intended playlist and service. YouTube’s event schedule is not a substitute for the host-side timer.
2. Record the ingest details securely
For each event, configure the encoder with the correct server URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its live-stream settings guidance. Treat each key as a secret: do not put it in a public playlist, a world-readable unit file, a shared log, or a command copied into an unsecured support post. Use a protected configuration mechanism appropriate to your host and check its file permissions.

3. Decide the output settings for the source material
Set the encoder’s video and audio parameters to match the media and the capabilities of the host, and confirm the settings meet YouTube’s current requirements before scheduling unattended operation. The sources cited here do not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, codec, or keyframe interval for every playlist, so do not copy a single value across streams without checking the current YouTube guidance and the files you will play. If the playlist files will be passed through without re-encoding, their stream properties must be compatible with one another and with the intended output.

Build and validate each playlist
One option for ordered files is FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. Its input list uses a file directive, with optional duration entries; the demuxer presents files in sequence as if their packets had been muxed together. For example, a list can have this shape:

Concat demuxing has an important compatibility condition: the files should have the same streams, including codecs and time base. Incorrect duration information can produce artifacts. Test transitions and audio at file boundaries instead of assuming that a playlist that opens successfully will play cleanly from end to end.

The concat demuxer handles sequential input; it is not by itself a scheduler or a complete YouTube streaming configuration. Choose and test a playback/encoder command that sends the intended output to the correct event’s ingest URL, and keep that command and its playlist specific to the stream.
Map each playlist to a service and timer
For each stream, create a service whose responsibility is to run that stream’s playlist and encoder command. Pair it with a timer that activates that service at the intended time. Use one stable naming scheme so the relationship is obvious, such as a stream identifier shared by the playlist, configuration, service, timer, and log references.

- the YouTube event, ingest URL, and protected stream-key reference;
- the ordered playlist path and any working directory the command expects;
- the encoder command and output settings chosen for that media;
- where service output will be recorded and how to inspect it;
- what should happen if the encoder exits or the host loses power, including whether and how a restart should be attempted.
Timer syntax and behavior can depend on the systemd version and distribution. Before writing or enabling timers, check the installed systemd.timer(5) manual on the target host for calendar expressions, time-zone interpretation, timer enablement, missed starts after downtime, and interaction with an already-running service. The current detailed timer-manual endpoint was unavailable during preparation, so this article does not claim a particular timer expression or unit-file example is valid on every system. Once the local service and timer are configured and checked against that host’s manual, enable the timer for the intended boot behavior and verify it is waiting for the expected time. A timer’s local schedule still needs to align with the event time shown in YouTube Studio.
Test the full path before relying on an unattended start
- Test one stream manually first. Start its service on demand and confirm that it reads the expected playlist, connects with the matching key, and sends usable audio and video.
- Inspect YouTube’s preview. Open the corresponding event in Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview, and check stream health before clicking Go live. YouTube recommends starting the encoder in advance and checking the preview; see its live-streaming tips.
- Test the timer separately. Confirm that it activates the correct service at the intended local date and time. Do not infer success merely because the YouTube event is scheduled.
- Test each mapping. Repeat with every event, key, playlist, and service. A swapped key or playlist can otherwise send the wrong program to a valid event.
- Review logs and resource use. Inspect the service’s journal or configured log destination after starts, playlist transitions, and failures. When several streams share one host, test them together so aggregate encoding load and outbound traffic are visible.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for a stream that runs indefinitely or exceeds that duration; see YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance.

Protect the content as well as the stream
A timer only automates when your host starts sending media; it does not grant rights to broadcast that media or guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization. Use recordings you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies for your situation. Documentary footage, music, and clips may have separate rights considerations. Which approach fits?
Use systemd timers when you want host-level control over schedules, encoder commands, and logs, and are prepared to operate and test that infrastructure. Use a cloud workflow when you prefer not to keep a computer or server running at home. Either way, schedule the YouTube event separately, protect its key, and check the feed in Live Control Room before trusting an unattended start.
