To keep one broadcast live while its content changes, schedule the event in YouTube Studio and configure the six-hour transitions in the encoder or playout system sending video to YouTube. Test that system’s timing and confirm the broadcast stays live before relying on it.
What YouTube scheduling does—and does not do
A scheduled livestream is the viewer-facing event: it has a start time and event details, and viewers can find it in advance and set reminders. The video and audio are a separate feed sent to YouTube by an encoder or playout system. Scheduling the event does not schedule changes to that feed.
YouTube’s documented scheduling and live-streaming workflows do not describe a native six-hour playlist-rotation control. A YouTube playlist associated with videos is also different from a playout playlist that sends changing content into one continuous livestream.
Choose the right kind of six-hour change
One continuous livestream, with new content every six hours
Use this approach if viewers should stay on the same live broadcast while the outgoing video changes. The encoder or another playout layer must support the timed transition you need. Check its current documentation for the exact timer, playlist, and transition controls; capabilities and steps vary by product.

Before scheduling the public event, verify that the change does not stop the encoder transmission or end the YouTube broadcast. A timer that starts a new output or reconnects the encoder may behave differently from a seamless change within an active feed.
A new livestream event every six hours
If each interval should have a new watch page or broadcast event, schedule separate YouTube events instead. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation distinguishes broadcast events from streams, and describes reusing stream settings for recurring broadcasts; reusing settings does not make a playlist rotate within one event.

Schedule the YouTube livestream
- Open the Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Manage tab.
- Create the event. Schedule a new livestream, or reuse settings from a previous stream when appropriate. Set the event details, visibility, and start time.
- Get the encoder connection details. In the Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key with the encoder or playout system that will send the video feed. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Configure the six-hour content change outside YouTube Studio. Build the playlist or source-change schedule in the encoder or playout workflow. Confirm the interval is measured from the intended point—for example, broadcast start or a particular clock time—and check how the system handles delayed starts and interruptions.
- Rehearse the full sequence. Use a private or unlisted rehearsal to check the order, audio, video, transition timing, and what happens if the encoder reconnects. Confirm that the change leaves the YouTube broadcast active.
- Start early and inspect the preview. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor stream quality before and during the broadcast.
Plan for interruptions and archiving
Decide in advance what should happen if the encoder or playout system loses its connection near a scheduled change. Check whether it resumes the current item, skips to the next item, or requires operator action; this behavior depends on the system you choose and should be verified in rehearsal.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not a six-hour rotation feature, a guarantee about longer broadcasts, or a recommendation to keep a stream running for a particular duration.
