YouTube Studio can schedule the live event and create an upcoming watch page, but it does not run a 24/7 prerecorded playlist or automatically replace that playlist every month. You need two parts: a scheduled YouTube event for viewers, and an encoder or cloud playout service that sends the continuous video feed. Plan the monthly playlist change in that playout system, and confirm how it applies updates before relying on a specific changeover time.
Understand the two parts of a scheduled 24/7 stream
A scheduled YouTube live stream is an event with a planned start time, metadata, and a watch page. Viewers can find it ahead of time and opt into notifications. The actual live picture and sound still have to be sent to YouTube by a source such as streaming software on a computer, a hardware encoder, or a cloud playout service. Scheduling the event does not itself play videos.
That distinction matters when you want a new playlist each month: editing a playlist on YouTube does not, by itself, change the video feed an encoder or playout service is sending to a live event. The playlist change must be made in the system that produces the live feed.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the date you plan to launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Schedule the YouTube event
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage and choose Schedule stream.
- Choose to reuse settings from an earlier stream or create a new stream. Enter the event details, including its title, description, visibility, and planned start time.
- Review the scheduled event in Live Control Room and share its watch page if you want viewers to set reminders.
YouTube’s encoder workflow documents these scheduling steps and the option to reuse settings. Its live-stream settings also include controls such as stream-key management and auto-start or auto-stop; check the settings for the specific event rather than assuming they are configured as you need. Prepare the new playlist before the monthly change
Build the next month’s playlist in the system that will send the feed to YouTube. Set the intended order and check each media file before the changeover. Confirm that the files play, that audio is present, and that you have the necessary rights to stream every item. For a documentary channel, that means checking rights for the film, soundtrack, archival footage, and any other included material—not just whether a video is publicly viewable on YouTube.
- Choose an effective date and time, and account for the time zone used by your team and audience.
- Keep the current playlist available until the replacement is ready and verified.
- Ask the playout provider how edits take effect: at the next item, at the next loop, at a scheduled boundary, or only after a restart. These behaviors are provider-specific.
- Test the new playlist in advance if the service allows it, and check both video and audio in the outgoing feed.
The reviewed YouTube scheduling instructions do not document a native monthly playlist-swap feature. Do not assume that changing a YouTube video playlist will change an encoder’s live output.

Choose how to send the continuous feed
Run an encoder on a computer or hardware device
YouTube supports software encoders running on computers and standalone hardware encoders. In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the server URL and stream key for the event, then enter them in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination settings. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
Set the encoder’s video and audio options to values supported by the media and the YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover sending the stream URL and key, but this article does not prescribe a bitrate or resolution: choose values using YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your source files and connection, then verify the resulting preview. If you change the stream key, update the encoder too.
A local encoder requires the computer or device, encoder software, power, and network connection to remain available for the broadcast. The operator is responsible for monitoring the feed and responding if the encoder or connection stops.

Use cloud playlist playout
Cloud playout services describe workflows where you upload or select videos, arrange them as a playlist, and send the continuous output to YouTube over RTMP from their servers. For example, Looping Stream and Upstream describe playlist-based cloud playout. Those are provider descriptions, not independent reliability tests. Before depending on any service, confirm its current YouTube support, monthly playlist-change procedure, recovery behavior, monitoring, support terms, and costs.
Start the feed and confirm the event is live
- Start the encoder or cloud playout output using the server URL and stream key associated with the scheduled event.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and wait for YouTube’s incoming preview.
- Check that the expected video and audio are present and that the broadcast status is healthy.
- Go live when the event workflow requires it. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe starting the encoder, waiting for preview, and then going live in Live Control Room. If you use auto-start or auto-stop, verify those event settings in advance.
- Monitor the actual output, especially around the monthly playlist transition. A provider’s stated recovery feature or uptime is not a substitute for checking your own broadcast.
Plan separately for archives
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a single continuous 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed complete replay. If a complete archive matters, keep a local recording backup and consider ending and restarting the broadcast in sessions shorter than 12 hours, with time to spare below that threshold. Whichever approach you choose, compare the operational burden and service or hardware costs against how much hands-on monitoring your channel can provide. Neither a scheduled event nor a continuous playlist removes the need to check rights, the outgoing feed, and the archive plan.

Troubleshoot common problems
The scheduled watch page exists, but viewers see no video
Scheduling creates the event; it does not start a feed. Start the encoder or cloud playout output with the correct event’s server URL and stream key, then check for an incoming preview in Live Control Room.

YouTube does not show an incoming preview
Check that the output is running and that the URL and stream key match the scheduled event. If you recently changed the key, replace the saved key in the encoder or playout service. Also check the service’s output status and your local network if using an encoder at home.
The monthly playlist did not switch when expected
Check where the live feed is generated, not just the YouTube watch page or a separate YouTube video playlist. Confirm the provider’s update timing and whether a restart is required. If the new files do not play, restore the known-good playlist while you investigate.
The stream stops or the connection drops
Check the encoder or provider’s output status, the local device and network if applicable, and Live Control Room’s broadcast status. Follow the provider’s documented reconnect procedure and confirm the feed returns in preview. Do not assume a stream will recover without verifying the actual output.
The 24/7 stream has no complete replay
Check the broadcast duration. YouTube’s archive guidance warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local recording backup or plan shorter sessions if complete archives are important.
