You need an eligible channel, rights-cleared media, an encoder configured with your YouTube stream URL and key, and a laptop and internet connection that remain stable while streaming. A single live session longer than 12 hours may not be archived, so plan separately for stream continuity and replay preservation.
What “schedule a 24/7 playlist channel” means
A scheduled stream creates an upcoming YouTube event that viewers can find and, where available, set a reminder for. The encoder on your laptop supplies the actual video and audio feed. To make a playlist appear continuously, configure an encoder to play the selected videos in sequence or loop them, then send that feed to the scheduled event.
Scheduling is not a way to make a laptop unnecessary: for this do-it-yourself setup, the laptop must stay powered, connected, and running the encoder. Nor does a scheduled event guarantee uninterrupted transmission. YouTube notes that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
Check eligibility and rights before setting up
Confirm the channel can go live
- Your channel must be verified and have had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- YouTube’s current general guidance sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16.
- If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before your intended start.
Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions; platform procedures can change.

Use media you are entitled to stream
Use recordings for which you have the necessary rights for the intended use and territories, including music rights where applicable. Public availability of a video or song does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination; even having a license may not prevent a Content ID interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel.
Read YouTube’s copyright guidance and obtain any permissions that apply to your material before scheduling the event.

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Create a new scheduled stream or reuse settings, then enter the title, description, privacy setting, and intended date and time. Check the displayed time zone so the event is scheduled when you expect.
- Save the event and review its details in Live Control Room. A scheduled event can appear as upcoming, and viewers may be able to choose Notify me.
- Keep the event’s stream details available for encoder setup. Scheduling creates the event; it does not start the laptop encoder or generate the playlist feed.
Configure the spare laptop and encoder
- Choose an encoder that can play your selected playlist and encode continuously on the actual laptop. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes software and hardware encoders, but does not establish a universal minimum CPU, memory, or laptop specification for a 24/7 stream.
- In the encoder, select the scheduled YouTube event if the software offers that workflow, or enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key shown for it. Configure the media source to play the videos in the intended order and repeat the playlist if that is the desired behavior.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Set the laptop to stay awake while plugged in, prevent automatic sleep or shutdown during the broadcast, and check the machine’s temperature and stability during a sustained test. These are practical precautions, not a published YouTube hardware guarantee.
Test bandwidth and start on schedule
Check the connection’s actual outbound upload capacity, not just its download speed. The chosen video settings and bitrate must fit the available upload capacity, with spare headroom for fluctuations and other people or devices using the network. A wired Ethernet connection can be useful where available, but no connection type guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
- YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start so you can inspect the Live Control Room preview and correct problems before viewers arrive.
- Confirm that video is moving, audio is audible and correctly routed, and the encoder reports a stable connection. Monitor the stream during the test rather than relying on a single successful connection.
- Keep the laptop powered and connected for as long as you expect the stream to run. If the laptop sleeps, loses power, loses internet, or the encoder stops, the feed can end.

Plan for replays and very long sessions
Do not assume a 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR controls may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.
If preserving a replay matters, keep the original files and consider making a local recording or ending and restarting sessions before they exceed 12 hours. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish an official restart cadence for a 24/7 channel, so choose an operating plan that fits your archive needs and monitor each session. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; do not rely on the live-stream archive as your only copy.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification, age eligibility, any live-stream restriction in the past 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still processing. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The scheduled event exists, but viewers see no video: Confirm the encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the playlist is assigned as the active source. The scheduled event does not create the feed itself.
- The encoder will not connect or the stream drops: Recheck the stream URL and key, then test outbound bandwidth and competing network use. A connection disruption can break the stream; leave upload headroom and inspect the encoder and Live Control Room status.
- There is no sound or the wrong audio plays: Check the encoder’s audio source and monitor playback in its preview and YouTube’s Live Control Room before the event begins.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Review the rights for every video and music track, and check whether the relevant rights owner has allowlisted the channel in Content ID. A license alone may not stop an automated interruption.
- The broadcast ended but no full replay appears: A session over 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Preserve source files and use an independent local recording if an archive is essential.
