For YouTube Live with NVIDIA NVENC H.264 in OBS, set Rate Control to CBR, choose YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are H.264 ingest recommendations, not an NVENC-specific table; your upload connection must sustain the selected bitrate reliably.
Recommended H.264 bitrate by resolution and frame rate
Use the row matching the resolution and frame rate OBS sends to YouTube. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not guarantees about the quality or bitrate each viewer will receive. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats.
| Ingest resolution | Frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) | 60 fps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 30 fps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p | 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p | 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p | 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p | 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p | 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p | 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p | 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p | 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
YouTube’s same H.264 table also gives minimums separately; for example, its minimum is 6 Mbps at 1080p60 and 8 Mbps at 1440p60. Treat the recommended column as the target when your connection can sustain it. Do not substitute AV1 or H.265 values: YouTube publishes separate bitrate guidance for those codecs.
Set up NVENC in OBS
- Choose the video encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Output. If Output Mode is set to Simple, switch to Advanced to expose encoder controls. Under the Streaming section, select NVIDIA NVENC H.264. OBS labels can vary by version and installed hardware.
- Set rate control and bitrate. Set Rate Control to CBR. Set the bitrate to the YouTube H.264 recommendation for the output resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. If your connection cannot reliably sustain that target, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and select that row’s bitrate instead.
- Set keyframes. Set Keyframe Interval to 2 s. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Check output resolution and frame rate. In OBS, review Settings > Video so the output resolution and FPS correspond to the bitrate row you selected. YouTube’s listed encoder guidance goes up to 60 fps.
- Keep standard compatibility settings. YouTube recommends progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR, as well as RTMPS ingestion. Where OBS exposes these controls, preserve compatible defaults and confirm the stream’s service settings rather than applying low-level overrides without a reason.
- Connect OBS to the correct YouTube stream. Use the stream key associated with the intended YouTube live stream in OBS’s service or stream settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to that destination. YouTube’s stream-management guidance covers keys and latency settings: YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Which resolution and frame rate should you choose?
Start with the highest option your connection can sustain consistently and your content benefits from. A higher frame rate can help fast movement look smoother; a higher resolution can preserve more detail. Both raise the bitrate target: at 1080p, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 60 fps; at 1440p, it recommends 21 Mbps for 30 fps and 34 Mbps for 60 fps.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the higher target is unstable, choose a lower resolution or frame rate rather than keeping a nominally higher setting that drops frames or interrupts the stream. There is no universal upload-headroom percentage established in YouTube’s guidance; available capacity and stability vary by connection. Run an upload speed test and check performance with representative video movement and audio.
NVENC preset and advanced options
There is no single NVENC preset that is best for every stream. The right choice depends on the GPU, OBS version, workload, and whether you prioritize encoding performance or image quality. Start from OBS’s available defaults, then validate the result while streaming or recording representative content.

OBS 31.0 documents controls including preset, tuning, multipass, profile, and adaptive quantization. Its options also include VBR with target quality and Ultra High Quality tuning; OBS notes that Ultra High Quality significantly reduces throughput and is not recommended there for gaming. These controls do not change YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendation for a given resolution and frame rate. An OBS NVENC guide published in 2018 explains the controls but its example preset choices should not be treated as universal recommendations for current hardware.
Test before going live
Run a test stream using the same resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate planned for the event. Include representative motion and audio, then watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback during the test and the live event. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” The guidance is in YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Troubleshooting bitrate and stream-health problems
- Connection or stream-health warnings: The upload connection may not reliably sustain the configured bitrate, or may fluctuate. Run an upload test, reduce the output resolution or frame rate if needed, and use the matching recommended bitrate row.
- OBS drops frames: Check whether the issue is network-related or encoder-related in OBS’s statistics and YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the connection cannot carry the target consistently, lower the output target; if encoder load is the issue, review NVENC settings and workload rather than raising bitrate.
- Settings do not match the target row: Confirm the actual output resolution and FPS in OBS, then set the bitrate for that combination. A 1080p60 stream and a 1080p30 stream have different recommended targets.
- Keyframe or ingestion compatibility warning: Confirm CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, check that the intended H.264 encoder is selected, and verify YouTube’s current service and stream settings.
- Audio or motion looks wrong in the test: Repeat the test with representative movement and audio before the event; a static desktop test may not reveal problems that occur with the real content.
Copyright and reused-content checks for recorded material
If you stream a documentary, a compilation, or other pre-recorded video, bitrate settings do not grant rights to the footage, music, narration, or images. Use material you own or have permission to use, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules before scheduling a stream. A technically healthy stream can still be restricted or removed if its content violates platform policies.
