You can send a prerecorded Hindi church sermon to YouTube Live from Ubuntu with FFmpeg: install FFmpeg, create a YouTube live stream, copy its ingest URL and stream key, then run FFmpeg with -re so the recording plays at normal speed. The video is prerecorded; “live” describes how it is delivered. Before the service, confirm that YouTube receives both picture and sound and check its stream health.
1. Install FFmpeg and check your Ubuntu build
FFmpeg is available in Ubuntu’s package archive. The version depends on your Ubuntu release and updates: Ubuntu’s Jammy (22.04) package listing, for example, shows 4.4.2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1; that is a Jammy-specific package record, not a claim about every Ubuntu system. Install the package and inspect the build on your own machine:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'libx264| aac'
If the encoder search does not show the encoders used below, check the installed build and its available encoders before proceeding. Ubuntu package availability and versions are listed in the Ubuntu package catalog.
2. Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream for the service.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP; use the RTMPS ingest details when your FFmpeg build and endpoint support them.
- Keep the actual key private. Treat it like a password: do not post it in a public script, shell-history example, screenshot, or message. The command below uses placeholders rather than a real credential.
YouTube’s RTMPS guidance explains stream-key use and secure ingest. A successful FFmpeg process by itself does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

3. Inspect the sermon recording before choosing settings
Check what the file contains before deciding whether to transcode it or attempt stream copy:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i "sermon.mp4"
Confirm that the expected video and audio streams are present. Note the resolution, frame rate, and codecs, then listen for clear Hindi speech and check that picture and sound stay synchronized. There is no special Hindi-specific encoder setting established here; the practical checks are intelligibility, synchronization, and stable ingest.

4. Send the recording to YouTube at playback speed
This is a starting template for a file with video and audio. Replace the filename, ingest URL, and key placeholders with your own values. It is not a tested command for every file, Ubuntu release, FFmpeg build, or YouTube account.
ffmpeg -re -i "sermon.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
Use YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest URL if the installed FFmpeg build supports it. The -re option paces a file input at its native playback rate instead of letting FFmpeg read it as fast as possible. FFmpeg documents this real-time input pattern with an FLV output and RTMP destination in its command-line documentation; Ubuntu also provides an FFmpeg manpage.

-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264;-pix_fmt yuv420pis the pixel format used in this template.-r 30sets the output to 30 frames per second. Match the output choice to the source and the stream you intend to deliver.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP. At 30 fps, that is a two-second keyframe interval. If streaming at 60 fps, use a 120-frame GOP for the same interval.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset video-rate controls. The example uses a 5 Mbps target for H.264 1080p30, YouTube’s listed recommended rate for that combination.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes audio as AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Check that speech remains clear and synchronized in the YouTube preview.-f flvselects the muxer used in FFmpeg’s documented RTMP publishing example. Do not assume a particular file’s streams can be sent with stream copy just because the output is FLV.
5. Match bitrate and keyframes to the stream
YouTube’s current encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Bitrate guidance depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current table for your chosen combination rather than copying a setting from an unrelated stream.
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
The FFmpeg template’s 5 Mbps value matches YouTube’s listed recommended rate for H.264 1080p30. For H.264 1080p60, the listed minimum is 6 Mbps and the recommendation is 17 Mbps. YouTube recommends CBR; actual rate-control behavior depends on the encoder and FFmpeg build, so inspect the installed encoder’s help if strict CBR behavior is necessary.

6. Test the broadcast before the service
- Start the stream early using your channel’s test workflow or an appropriate private or unlisted setup.
- In Live Control Room, confirm that the preview shows the sermon and that audio is present.
- Listen to representative Hindi speech and watch moving video; check for synchronization problems, freezes, or interruptions.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and monitor them during the broadcast.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Do not treat an FFmpeg process that is still running as proof that the audience is receiving a healthy feed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Choose transcoding or stream copy based on the file
Transcoding
The template transcodes to H.264 video and AAC audio, formats commonly listed for YouTube ingest. This gives you control over output frame rate and bitrate but uses CPU. If Ubuntu cannot encode smoothly, test before the service and reduce output demands only in line with the source and YouTube’s current guidance.

Stream copy
Using -c copy can avoid re-encoding and reduce CPU use, but it is appropriate only if the file’s existing streams and container are compatible with the chosen ingest and muxer. The file’s actual metadata matters; the command above deliberately does not assume that any particular sermon recording can be copied directly.
8. Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube never shows a preview: Check that the ingest URL and stream key belong to the selected live stream, that the key has no accidental whitespace, and that the FFmpeg output destination is correct. Keep the key private while correcting it.
- FFmpeg exits with an encoder error: Check
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -encodersfor the encoders named in the command. The package build varies by Ubuntu release. - The video runs too quickly: For a prerecorded file, include
-rebefore the input so FFmpeg reads it at playback speed. - YouTube reports poor stream health: Check output bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current settings for the selected codec and resolution. Test with representative moving video and audio, then review the health indicators again.
- Audio is missing, unclear, or out of sync: Use
ffprobeto confirm an audio stream exists, then listen to the YouTube preview. Verify audio encoding and synchronization before the actual service. - RTMPS does not connect: Confirm that the FFmpeg build and the selected YouTube endpoint support the RTMPS URL. YouTube recommends RTMPS; do not treat unencrypted RTMP as equally secure.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded recordings rather than running FFmpeg on Ubuntu, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the sermon recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and has a first day free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
